your overprint is similar to those of the AUSTRALIAN STATES—SOUTH AUSTRALIA— official stamps O 27 to O 51 from 1874 to 1890. Could have been use on a postal stationary enveloppe or Post card. OR on a duty stamp... hope you find a full answerd...

Looking at my 1971 Higgins & Gage, it looks like this is from an Official Postal Card from South Australia. It also looks to be Type II (Oval "O"). Type I has a round "O". If it were a full card it would be worth 12.50 pounds. Being a cut square it is considerably less.
