Clayton, not too much sharing at all. Always interesting to see where starts from. You've drawn an incredibly vivid picture of your inheritance

Actually sharing a short note is the polite thing to do, but in so many stamp boards, newbies are at best ignored or shunted aside, so they just lurk and hope that some discussion will answer their unasked query..
Here you are welcome and as Michael wrote;

Most of the denizens who dwell here believe that the only dumb question is the UNASKED question.
Hello and welcome Clayton. Ask your questions I am sure we will endeavour to annswer them as best as we can.

Hi Clayton,
You've landed on the friendliest and I believe most helpful stamp group on the web. Ask anything and someone somewhere in the world will get you an answer, and probably tell you a lot more as well about your stamp(s). There are experts here and beginners, all united in a love of stamps. You'll find that the most expert will in no way look down on you as a newbie but will help you get to where they are and the inbetweeners are more than willing to share information, because we usually learn something from others' answers to your query.
Good luck with you collection, sorry to hear how it came to you, but I'm sure your mum would be pleased to see it continuing, and above all enjoy the world that stamps opens up.
All best wishes,
Merv
Thank you all, Really appreciate the welcome and greetings.

Run away!! Run away while you can!! Those little pieces of paper are addictive!! Just give 'em all to us while you still have your sanity and your eyesight!! It's for your own good *heheh*
Just remember, we all started our collections somewhere, whether it was from stuff that was given to you, to just cutting those corners off the envelopes...
Welcome to the wonderful, confusing, beautiful, frustrating, joyous world of stamp collecting, Clayton!
There are many of us who specialize in certain "areas" of collecting; let us know what your interests are - as soon as you figure that out - and we will be glad to assist you in any way we can.
In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

No.... I'm afraid there are no "exotic" stamps. You can view a large portion of it.

Clayton,
Thanks for providing the link. It actually brought out a real sense of nostalgia for me, especially the stamps from the mid-1970s which is when I started collecting as 12 year old. Normally I would look at those stamps through the jaded eye of a longtime collector. But I kind of envy you, every stamp you see is something new to you. The great thing about this hobby is that almost 40 years later, I am still discovering new things.
I hope you enjoy the hobby as much as I have.
Bob
Welcome to Stamporama, its a wonderful friendly place and enjoy your collection

My apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place. I am new to StampoRama and I did not see a discussion board for introductions. I live in Southern California (Near LAX), and I had always planned to collect stamps, but just never got around to it. Not for lack of interest, but like so many... a lack of time. I have too many hobbies and just not enough time. Unfortunately, due to my mother's very recent passing, I have inherited her little stamp collection.
Apparently my mother had been collecting stamps for many years. I'm not sure I can even call it a collection. The quantity doesn't appear to be more than four or five hundred. I have the USPS' 2011 yearbook and the latest Warman's US stamp field guide.
I have surface-studied most of the stamps. A few mint and used ones came from Mystic and some from Littleton Stamp & Coin Co. (Where I purchase occasionally for my coin collection) Now just, Littleton Coin Co.
As my mother worked for an organization dealing with people from all over the world, I believe many of the stamps are ones she saved just from correspondences to her.
Pretty much all of her stamps were kept in their original shipping envelopes. Just one small album containing a few stamps. At this point the stock book appears to be much older than any of the stamps.
So perhaps too much sharing, not sure. I am not looking to sell any stamps. I am going to sort them into albums and continue building her collection. I am awaiting new purchased stamps, albums and supplies to arrive. Trial and error I guess. Looking forward to learning alot here.
Thanks
Clayton
