Bobby your efforts created a flood of e-mails in my in box. Is there a way to supress the e-mail notifications when you purge the old postings?
Sorry Michael, I have no way of averting that. I do not use email notifications for that very reason - I get enough spam as it is.
Since I have never used the notification feature, I am only shooting in the dark here, but can't you change your settings to eliminate the notifications?
BTW, I haven't purged anything yet, just trying to get folk to police their own postings.
Yes I can turn them off but then I wouldn't get a notification when someone posted items for trade or sale. I guess getting a few extra e-mails isn't a big deal.
Mike
I was going to post the same thing that Michael posted...but more like..."What are you doing, Bobby? Trying to drive me to drink??"
I get the messages so I can moderate even when I'm not logged on. It's not a problem, just don't do it all the time, ok?
I thought the same thing. Perhaps it would just be a better idea to place a general thread under the Sales, Swap and Auction topic - and inform all participants to heed the thread by placing a "still active" reply in their own thread. If after say 30 days you find some that have not placed a "still active" reply in their thread, contact them and give them a 10 day extension, per se. Then if nothing, delete the thread.
That way, like everyone else, our inbox won't be bombarded like they were this morning. Plus, on my phone, it doesn't come up with the specific topic - I have to open each one of them and needless to say, I was not all that pleased to keeping opening and deleting.
So, no offense intended, perhaps doing a general thread would be the most effective way to handle the issue.

I had no idea that the email notification system was relied upon so heavily. I review the entire board at least 10 times every day to check for new posts - takes about 2 minutes each time - so I really do not even see why such a notification system is necessary; seems like a waste of bandwidth to me. In fact, I would say that on an average day, there are 20 or less new posts during the course of the entire day. Maybe under the old board it was more difficult to identify new posts, but under the new board all you have to do is run your eyes down the right side of the page and look for the current date.
That may be true but not all of us have constant access to a computer but through email notifications we don't miss things by getting email on our phones. Also trying to look at the website using one's phone is not exactly the easiest thing to do.

Point taken. My old eyes have trouble even seeing the # I am dialing.
I trust that any adjustment of the notifications system will not affect the auction bid/outbid notices ?
Charlie, I believe the email notification system being discussed only pertains to notifications of posts to the discussion board. Auction notifications are separate and apart from email notifications for the discussion board and neither affects the other.
I sincerely apologize in advance for any inconvenience to those of you who have email notifications engaged across the discussion board, but I have reached the point where I must make much needed, and past due, notifications to those posting under the "Sales, Swap and Auction" topic. Absent wholesale, unnotified edits, moves and deletions (which I avoid like the plague) the only way I can, in good conscience, delete or move threads under this topic is to give those posting notice in each thread that action is forthcoming absent their input. I will be doing this over the course of the next few days, and anticipate being done by Monday, April 29.
To avoid clutter, those of you who have notifications set up might want to disable same for the "Sales, Swap and Auction" topic until Monday.
Sincerely,

Most discussions are archived when they reach a certain age so that we can go back and read posts of interest to us. However, there are some topics which do not lend themselves to archiving, namely the Let’s Trade, Wanted to Buy and For Sale sub-topics under the Sales, Swap and Auction topic. Under the For Sale sub-topic, posts older than 2 months are automatically deleted; however, there is no board policy for the other two sub-topics.
To alleviate the clutter I respectfully request the following:
If you have a trade or buy post from before March 1, 2013, and that post remains viable, please post a response under the thread which states simply, "refresh,†and the thread will remain active. If your trade or buy offer is completed, or if you are no longer seeking to trade or buy, please delete the thread in its entirety.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
