I've had this in my album for many years, and have always puzzled over whether this is some sort of fancy cancel on this stamp or just an ink blob gone awry. Ideas?

I don't believe this is the "Kicking Mule" fancy cancel, at least not the famous one produced by C.A. Klinkner & Co. Here is an image of that cancel.

I do not see anything in my Cancellations and Killers of the Bank Note Era 1870-1894 Book that looks like that cancel. It does look like a rabbit to me.

I'm with parkinlot. It looks as if the cancel began as a series of pen strokes.

I certainly do not see a mule, but what do I know. Actually looks more like a "Jack-a-lope" (mythical west Texas critter) to me. Anyway, it's a good conversation starter!

I think I am going back to the "ink blob" theory.

Bob Parkin:

Thank you for posting that image of the "kicking mule" cancel. Neat.
I appreciate your taking the time to share your eclectic knowledge
of the philatelic universe with us.

Seems to be an excess of hard feeling wafting through this topic
on this long Easter weekend, Hmmm?

All modern US spray cancellations look like Rorschach tests to me.
