I have a lot of respect for worldwide collectors. How you guys do it is beyond me.
My little guy is away for the weekend so I thought it was an opportune time to go through these - get them organised and then I can throw them up into the SOR auction. In the meantime, my nice relaxing long weekend being alone may turn into a "pull out my hair" weekend!
I'll be posting more "help me" listings sooner than later and thanks in advance to everyone who helps me out!

I've come to the conclusion that it's not actually the stamps that are giving me a headache. I hate Scott - they keep sending me on a wild goose chase with their "see #...." for the same design. I've been spoiled by SG and Michel, life will never be the same again...

I like the variety of worldwide collecting.
When I used to specialize in something, on a good day you might run into half a dozen collectors interested in the same specialty (unfortunately, there just aren't than selvedge collectors). Whereas in worldwide collecting, you can interact with every collector (even the specialists).
Enjoy your foray into WW collecting!

I'm trying to get through France, apparently my traveling is not going all that well. There are a few left over that I can't find (no doubt I missed a "see #...." argh!)
Question though: Why am I finding modern stamps mng? My only experience with mint no gum is pre-1900s. These are 1960s and 1970s stamps. I don't understand it.

Could be a lot of reasons for unused no gum. Maybe the batch included stamps that were recovered from a flood or pipe burst. Maybe the stamps were hinged with too much moisture and had to be soaked off the album. Maybe the stamps went through the mail without being cancelled; why such a large percentage, your guess is a as good as mine -- however, I know that I put stamps that were not properly cancelled in a separate bin because I like my used stamps with cancels.

Another reason could be that the stamps have what is called a "dry" gum. The gum is there, but not the shiny gum like you may be used to.

Sure, there are plenty of stamps that are issued without gum too!

I'm really having second thoughts on this! LOL
Well, at least whatever is there will exercise my brain and then some lucky person can get them on the auction.
I doubt I'll be keeping many of these but it is an interesting (if you can call it that) experience. It's not the stamps so much - I'm just not used to using Scott and compared to SG and Michel - Scott is the most hair-pulling experience I've ever had!

I'm beginning to understand why Rome wasn't built in a day - they were using Scott catalogue as their guideline!

I'm late into this one but it seems from the messages that I am in the minority. I Like Scott. I collect worldwide by Scott and will keep anything that is listed in Scott (major numbers, minor numbers, footnotes etc. I made up my mind when I started to ignore stamps not listed in Scott and sell them to someone who uses Gibbons or Michel or whatever. The only exception for me is souvenir and miniature sheets. I grant that Scott can be confusing at times but if I get too confused, I work on another country until my mind settles down and then go back. The time off usually solves the problem. I try to buy only lots that are cataloged by Scott but occasionally mess up. I particularly detest Minkus. I bought a lot wit a number of collections in Minkus albums and it takes me forever to work them up. I also have trouble with Gibbons. I recently bought a Canadian collection which appeared to be in a Scott specialty album but is not and I am finding sets that have six or seven entries in this album but only 5 in Scott. I assume that the extras are either little a's in Scott or not listed for some reason but it takes a lot of time to weed it out. I have yet to figure out what catalog was used.
More of a pet peeve to me is albums that mount in whatever order looks best instead of catalog order. White Ace is a prime example. I was recently working on a White Ace Israel lot and find stamps from same sets mounted on different pages and find that I have two different White Ace Israel collections and the pages are different from album to album.

The Canada collection is probably based on the Unitrade Catalogue. It is a specialised Canadian catalogue that follows the Scott numbering system but has tons of additional numbers a,b, etc plus i, ii, iii, etc. ia, etc. for shades and varieties. The Unitrade Catalogue has really become quite complex over the years. Last year I updated my Unitrade Catalogue with the 2012 edition, my last edition ended I believe at the end of the '80s (obviously I hadn't worked on my Canada in a long time! 
) And I found myself fumbling around because there is so much variety and there is a note in the 2012 Catalogue that future catalogues will be including even more details. There are special sections for booklets, perfins, etc.
Since my focus is on Germany (with significant focus on varieties, etc.) and Russia, I use Michel and SG as there is more detail given for dates of issue (definitives are clearly listed for initial date of issue) as well as SG includes information on Engravers, etc. which I really like. But you get spoiled using those catalogues. You could almost say they are "Catalogues for Dummies" compared to Scott, because there is no guesswork, everything laid out clear as day. I love it.
I must admit, going through the Worldwide lot that I have, I'm not being all that particular and no doubt there are some identifying errors. I get frustrated with some of the watermarks and having to flip back and forth to double check the watermark numbers and trying to figure out what end is up, so to speak. So when all else fails, I just go with the lowest value. When I eventually put them up on the auction, I'll make note of that and maybe some people will get lucky due to my frustration and find themselves with a higher value stamp than what I put up.
Hopefully, those who look at the future auctions will not get angry if they get a stamp that turns out to be a different Scott number, but I'll be sure to make note of that in the listings.

I'm going through a whole bunch of worldwide (so far only European - thank goodness) stamps that I've come across. I usually only collect Germany and Russia and I now know why. I'm starting to get a headache going through some of these!!!

I like the variety of worldwide collecting.
