Hello and Welcome,
James you"ll find SOR is great place and be sure to check out our NEW links section lots of good info.

Hello All,
Thank-you for your replies and warm welcome. I agree with you, TheBlueDude, this place really is a useful mine of information. I am going to enjoy my time here. And to follow on from CapeStampMan's comments, I have posted a pic of 3 French stamps; no great value, just simple, nice stamps which I love.
James
You are absolutely right James, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I have many beautiful stamps in my albums, that show a minimum cv. Some much more beautiful than many of the rarer, high cv stamps.
Mike
Hi James,
I might as well come out as an aficionado of French stamps as well. The more modern stamps have lost a little bit of their appeal and then, of course, the sheer quantity! I stopped my France collection in 1980. I am focusing mostly on the colonies now, having achieved a degree of completeness for the mainland where there are about ten stamps left that I could afford without giving my wife serious grief. So the rest have will have to be acquired using stealth tactics. -- No. To be honest, France is a difficult country to complete.
Of course, since I only collect used, the colonies are really slow going. Most of it has to be acquired on a Euro basis in Europe. Ouch. -- But the stamps are just so beautiful!
Arno
Hello Mike, Hello Arno,
I know what you mean about the "sheer quantity" of French stamps. I was amazed - and a little shocked - when I got my catalogue. My collection starts with the 1900 Blanc series and breaks off with the cockerells of 1962. Apart from certain stamps (which I must ignore because of the price) that era seems mostly affordable. Happily, I have long, long way to go yet...
I am very glad that I am not the only one who likes France. I tried selling some on ebay and there was very little interest. Then I thought, I would be better on French ebay, the home-market and all that. It seems even the French don't like French stamps! Or maybe there are just too many of them available, like so many areas.
Happy collecting!
James
ps. Is "the Blanc series" correct? I have a habit of using Yvert terms for French stamps; maybe they have a different name in the US?
James,
While Ceres also list the series as Blanc, Scott describes them as "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". After all, what's in a name, beauty is more important to stamp collecter's.
Mike
Welcome, James! You have a beautiful cat!
Lisagrant87; thank-you for your welcome. Glad you like the photo - she was posing for the camera that day. Her name is Whiskers (not very original but it does suit her!) We normally call her "puss" anyway.
Your two dogs look very cute. Are they related?

Hi James
Welcome to Stamporama

James -
They are related. They are half-siblings. Both are Irish Jack Russell Terriers and they have the same dad but different moms. The black and white one is my boy, Bailey and the brown-headed white one is my girl, Kenzie. She's a month older than him and they're best friends but it's always a toss up who's in charge on which day. I love them tons as I'm sure you do your cat. I can't ever get them to pose for pictures so some of the best ones are when they're sleeping
James:
We have already met as I had the privilege of recommending your membership.
Welcome to Stamporama.
Dieppe is well known to many Canadians as the site of that ill-fated
raid of the Second World War. I toured the landing beaches in 1967.
In addition to beautiful postage stamps, France itself is a nation of much beauty.
I'm sure you will find that Stamporama has something to offer to even the most
sophisticated of stamp collectors. Enjoy your membership.

Lisagrant87 - How wonderful! I know what you mean about getting them to pose for pictures. Some days Little Cat seems to love the camera, and others she would rather sleep - today is a sleepy day!
And to Dryer - Thank-you for your welcome. The landing beaches around Normandie are very interesting and very moving. There is a plaque just along the coast which reads (from memory): "To all those who enjoy this beach today, remember those who fell to make it possible."
The anniversary of the Dieppe raid is next month, August 19th, and we will be having our usual memorial ceremony. There are always a large number of Canadian visitors taking part.
James
Welcome to SOR! I am very fond of both French & Austrian engraved issues of the past. The US has also issued many nicely engraved stamps back when.
Well James, a Great Big Welcome to SOR. There are some of us in the U.S. that also enjoy the companionship of CATS. I have three and I love them. All have different distinct personalities. One is a Maine Coon that is as close to a dog as you can get. She is over 22 pounds and follows me everywhere and wants to be wherever I am, unless she is grooming one of the other's, both males, but nothing going on between them. They Can't.
Hello All,
I am new here and thought I would introduce myself. My name is James and I am a collector turned stamp dealer. I began by collecting Great Britain up to 1970 and then delved into the British Commonwealth. Since moving to Dieppe, France, a few years ago I have now discovered how beautiful French stamps are - especially the issues before 1960.
I look forward to meeting new people here and sharing our combined knowledge.
Happy stamping to all,
James
