General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Identifying plate numbers on GB QV stamps with cancels

I have several QV stamps that have plate numbers printed in the design (e.g., Penny Reds with letters in each corner) but the number is obscured by a cancel mark. I know this is a stab in the dark, but does anyone have a solution that will allow you to "see through" the cancel to detect the engraved number? I've tried Clarity watermark fluid, even a Signoscope at one time, and holding the stamp up to a strong back light (and front light) ... to no avail.

I'm hoping someone will have figure out a way to detect designs under a cancel; anyone?

Thanks.

I have never tried to do that, but I would be willing to try. Could you post a hi-res scan (1200dpi ideally) of one of them and I can see what I can do.

Cheers,
Antonio

This is just a guess, but have you tried putting the stamp under ultraviolet light to see if the design will show through? It may be worth a try.

Have you tried a digital microscope??? I have a SVP DM540 that really works well. I cannot relate the attributes of this equipment, other than to say. Astonishing!!! I can zoom in to actually see the fibers of the paper. Worth the investment. About a $100 on eBay. If the cancel ink is an identical color of the stamp color, it becomes really difficult, but this does not happened often. I have been able to read through the cancel to depict the real image. Not always easy, but possible in most cases. Here is an image of the rascal. Image Not Found

Great suggestions; no, I have not tried either of those. I will try to get a high res scan of one of the stamps.

Thanks.
