Every once and a while the discovery of a new technique really takes your breath away. SOR member and prolific contributor Steve Swain has just posted an article on our site which details the use of an online software tool - retroReveal – that can be used to help study hidden and difficult to see markings on stamps.

Read the article here Hidden Datestamps Cancellations and Embossed Images Revealed

As usual, Steve’s article is richly illustrated, and the results of using retroReveal are stunning. Thanks to Steve for bringing this exciting capability to our attention. I’m headed to my stockbooks now to find some stamps to try this out!

Cheers,
Ralph

re: New Article – Software reveals hidden datestamps, cancelations and embossed images on stamps

I have been using this tool since December last year when it was mentioned at another site. It is great for deciphering cancellations on covers, it helps me in bidding on covers at auctions as I download the image and check it thoroughly with retro-reveal before placing a bid. Great online tool and a nice article.

Thanks for the posting Ralph and Steve thank you very much for the article. An excellent read as always. Do you think this tool would be useful for examining water marks?

It does help with watermarks on my Australian KG V Heads and Kangaroos but for US stamps the results were not that good. But it is good for checking grills and counting the peaks on grills of US stamps.

Thanks for posting the link. Looks really neat. Could someone also use a regular photo processing program though (picasa or gimp?). Sally
