found this stampless cover in a lot I acquired, does have a date of 1818 on the inside of the folded paper. Looks to be correspondence about financial dealings. Doe's have three different names and one says to be a sea captain. Was wondering where the letter was mailed from ?I am assuming that #6Image Not Found can identify where the letter was mailed from. I do not own that book but would like to. Any help would be appreatiaed.Steve

Fascinating cover!

The Honorable Israel Thorndike, Esq. is actually rather famous:

Where it came from may be easier to determine from the contents of the letter.

No. The number six is the rate. The marking is hard to read, but it probably says "Paid 6" in an ornamental frame. As of May 1, 1816 the rate for letters up to 30 miles distance was 6 cents, which puts the point of mailing with in a 30 mile radius of Boston. As suggested by Lars, the location of the sender should be discernible from the correspondence.

re: Stampless envelope

Interesting research, I have scanned the other parts of the letter. It seems there was correspondence that was filed in his file. The name on the front page in the lower left hand corner is two short lines. 1st reads Pa Hesper I believe and the 2nd
Capt.J or F aucns Junior. Very hard to make out the spelling. Thank you for the help and info.Steve
