NOTE: Canada Post also plans to increase the price of a stamp by 35 per cent to 85 cents when purchased in a booklet, starting on March 31. Stamps that are purchased individually will cost $1 each.

These rates are for regular sized #10 envelopes mailed to another Canadian address! From current 63c rate to $1.00 for maximum 30g weight = 37c increase which is a bit much to swallow. Oh and don't forget to add the tax on top of those rates!

I suppose it could be interesting to buy a lot of those "P" stamps now.
On the other hand, in the past Canada went from 0.17 to 0.30 in one step. That is almost doubling the price.

Over here we have seen a similar increase in stamp prices. In one year we went from € 0.50 to € 0.64.

The increase is one thing, but penalizing people who just want to buy a single stamp by charging another 15¢ on top of the price of a stamp is a bit ridiculous.

re: Huge Canada Post stamp increases and phasing out of urban home mail delivery service, job losses, etc...

Unfortunately, the only credible comments that I have read on Stamporama's discussion board, concerning Canada Post and it's realistic life expectancy, have been mine.

These latest postage fee increases and service decreases are nickel-and-dime measures - and everyone loves to criticize nickel-and-dime values because we all identify with them - and may only postpone for a moment or two the time when the plug is pulled once and for all on this Crown Corporation

Canada Post has superior management, top-shelf marketing, yet is unable to turn a profit in today's postal environment. It has to adapt radically to survive. None of the announced measures is radical. Canada Post is burdened by legislation and labour agreements. The present federal government supports the announced changes in Canada Post.

Agreed, it may not be your favourite bandwagon that is passing by, but at least give it a nostalgic/melancholic wave.

The biggest problem I have with it (of course, it's my regular beef with the current gov't) is that it was dropped on everyone like a bomb. No discussion in the House, nothing! I watch the Opposition and they are furious for several reasons - one being the fact that it was just "created". Albeit, should we be surprised when we have dipsticks who decide it's their right to over-ride unions and force people to work. Guess it's easy to see I'm no supporter of Tories. So much for our pride as a country that counts on the unions - we've seen that go to h... in a handbasket this past year.

(Sorry for the rant, but this is just the straw that broke the camel's back for me on the whole self-proclaimed "we can do anything we want" gov't mentality we currently have here - not something I've ever seen (even during the Mulroney days) nor am I proud of as a Canuck)

I believe you are (gasp) mistaken, Elizabeth. According to the mailman who delivers
to our community mailbox, Canada Post now delivers junk mail whether you want it or not.
This I know because my humble mailbox is identified as "no junk mail" and I now get it.

My hunch is that Canada Post has knuckled under to commercial mailers to protect its revenue
from deteriorating even more so.

On a more personal note, permit me to encourage you to return to your stamp albums.

John - The link I provided was to the Canada Post website. Could it be remotely possibly be that a Canada Post worker (your mail delivery person) could be misinformed? Have you ever had a postal clerk tell you something that you know is incorrect and pointed out the correct information to them in their rules & regulation handbook, only to see a surprised look on their face and a statement 'I didn't know that!'.

I do not receive any mail at all in my mailbox unless it is addressed to me or from the government. The government likes to keep me informed of how little they do and want to remind me that they're wasting my taxpayers dollars to print up a brochure that contains useless information. If they start dropping flyers in my mailbox they will be marked 'return to sender' in bold black marker and dropped in the box outside of our post office!

People in the US, beware... Darrell Issa, Chairman of the Postal Subcommittee has praised Canada Post for the changes it is going to implement, including both door-to-door delivery service AND Saturday mail delivery (already eliminated in Canada. Issa said, "The vast majority of American homes do not receive expensive to-the-door delivery, but instead receive less expensive curbside or centralized delivery." Elizabeth:

It is more than remotely possible that I am wrong, it is entirely possible.
I wear an hearing aid in one ear and have a cochlear implant on my other side.
I frequently hear what people aren't saying.

Some other possibilities: Canada Post's website may not be up to date;
our mailman (pardon the sexism but I don't think it's a female cross-dresser)
is a runaway rogue.

All that being said, I support entirely the changes Canada Post intends to make.
I say this as a taxpayer and as a citizen who believes we have too much government,
such that much of our populace believes it is the responsibility of the government
to take care of them. Individual responsibility is a thing of the past in our society
and we are all the poorer for it.

Imagine! Canadians complaining because they may have to walk to pick up their mail.
Have they no family? Have they no friends? Have they no neighbours? Unable to hire
a youngster to perform this chore?

Canada is the whine capital of the world as well as the planet's biggest litterbugs.

Also, local postmasters/mistresses have considerable managerial flexibility.

re: Huge Canada Post stamp increases and phasing out of urban home mail delivery service, job losses, etc...

I also support the latest moves by Canada Post. Of course, it is generally easier to resist change, and vent some frustration about what is so obvious. Our society has evolved, and if the current mail delivery system is too expensive, then it is time to apply common sense. I don't think tax payers should subsidize the system forever, and time has now come to curtail the exponential costs of door to door mail delivery. One should try to understand why are the cost so prohibitive. (may be union push, may be too generous pensions for entry level jobs that do not require post secondary education? - try to explain to our new kids that their university degree may never provide them with similar working conditions...) While I feel sorry for the real people who will lose their jobs, it is a reality that we all face...and considering CP stated that most job losses will be through attrition and retirements, this is probably a pretty good outcome for those lucky enough to get good pension for life...
Enough rambling and back to Philately. I see the move from CP as a necessary move to save our hobby, and keep delivering stamps. As my wishes for 2014, I will suggest that those postpersons that remain be awarded a personal obliterator, get rid of the marker, and follow a 1 hour training on the importance of philately for the future success of the enterprise.

I do wish Canada Post had not pulled all the P stamps so fast, like the Superman stamps, I like to use nice commemoratives on my mail, The only commemorative I can buy here is the 63c hockey stamps.
One way I found to get some nice stamps was to buy a bunch of the quarter packs my post office had.
That also tends to become expensive.
All the P stamps are now back in the canada post safe but will came back out in March with the new rate.

re: Huge Canada Post stamp increases and phasing out of urban home mail delivery service, job losses, etc...

Our little post office has no commemoratives at all left for sale and have only the US rate and International Rate definitives. If you want to mail a letter within Canada you have to stand in line and have them print a label to stick on the envelope.

I've noticed this past week (after the Christmas parcel pick up rush) that they've had three postal workers on the counter to serve customers and the line-ups are out the door for people waiting to have labels printed so they can post their letters. Normally one clerk can handle the traffic, except during the Christmas season when people are mailing and receiving a lot parcels. From 3-5 PM each day they have in the past had another postal worker on the counter for people who have received notices in their mailbox that they have mail to be picked up at the post office (registered & expedited mail, parcels or anything requiring a signature).

I hope their printing machines don't break down. (LOL) Perhaps we could be sidewalk vendors standing outside the post office selling our duplicate MNH Canadian commemoratives for postage or set up a booth at our Saturday in-the-park market for crafts people and farmers who sell their wares.

In the meantime until recent commemoratives are available I will be using older commemoratives issued prior to 2013 on my outgoing philatelic mail. I will resist putting labels on my philatelic mail.

re: Huge Canada Post stamp increases and phasing out of urban home mail delivery service, job losses, etc...

They will turn a nice little profit when they re-release all those "P" stamps in March.

re: Huge Canada Post stamp increases and phasing out of urban home mail delivery service, job losses, etc...

Patches:

Check with a local stamp dealer or stamp club for older mint postage... they'll probably sell it to you below face.
