I realize that at least 90% of the stamps purportedly from Heligoland are forgeries or reprints, but how da' ya' know what's what???? Is there an easy way to tell? I hate spending money on having these stamps expertized since I know the odds are they are not genuine. So anyone with any helpful hints, please let me know.

Bobby,
There is a great site listed in the SOR links section that is very detailed in the stamps of Heligoland and how to identify fakes and forgeries. Heres the link from our section.

http://www.fritzwagner.com/helgoland/robert_pollard_heligoland.html

It's in relatively easy to understand terms with detailed diagrams.

If you need any other help post a picture and I'll see if I can help you.

Bobby,
Keep in mind that many of the reprints have value. Some are more valuable than the originals. There are not a lot of forgeries. All of it is over 100 years old. I attended a presentation on Heligoland. The presenter had an enormous collection and he said he got most of it from local dealers that did not want to mess with trying to figure them all out. He also had a lot of reference material that I'm sure took him many years to assemble. He is not a member here, but I will see him this weekend and I will ask him for any ideas for you.
