That's really great. Have you gotten many phone calls from area people with collections/accumulations to sell? Sally

We do get some people who call and bring their inherited collections for us to take a look at. Have not seen one valuable one yet. One woman had her father's' collection. It would have had a lot of catalogue value but the stamps were in terrible condition. I wonder if we will get a bunch more requests after this article appeared.

re: West Essex Philatelic Society Article

That's what happened after our last show. Our local newspaper features reporter showed up and interviewed me during our show. The article appeared the next day. It took 2 days for the first call but I ended up talking with 9 people with stuff ("my grandmother's stamp collection", etc) for our club to look at / advise them what to do with. We referred several to dealers because they just didn't want to believe that the box of stuff wasn't really worth anything.

I felt sorry for one guy though - he had subscribed to the USPS First Day Cover service for many years and had over 900 covers. I imagine that's quite a bit of money. I am pretty sure he heard the same thing from the dealer we sent him to because he still has all of the covers.

Hi Londonbus1,

I have never seen these before. As far as I know, my club has always been known as the West Essex Philatelic Society or WEPS. I will check with some of the more senior members of the club to see if they know anything about this. I see a couple of these on Ebay and they say the club is in NJ. Not sure where they got that information. Perhaps they are assuming it is us because the name is similar. There is an Essex County Stamp Club in Windsor, Ontario.

Bob,

On the WEPS website I clicked on 'Photos and Documents'.
First there was a nice picture of yourself and others, but if you keep on scrolling you will come to the Stampex 1942 Certificate for the West Essex Philatelic Society. On that certificate, and others below it (all Stampex), is printed 'under the auspices of Essex Stamp Club'.

Those are what interests me and what I referred to in an earlier post.

Thanks for trying.

That is very interesting. I never even thought of that. I am going to have to do more digging. Sending images to everyone in the club who has email. Unfortunately, most of the more senior members don't have email. Will talk to them at the next meeting.

Mystery Solved. The American First Day Cover Society just put out a CD with every issue of their publication, First Days. I ordered the cd and popped it into my computer. For some reason one of the first files I opened was the 1958 Directory. Well guess what I found? On page 40 the Essex Stamp Club is listed. It was in Newark, NJ as I suspected. They were located at 982 Broad Street, Newark 2, New Jersey - Representative Milton Weinik. That may be the reason my club is called the "West Essex" Philatelic Society as Newark is in east Essex county.
