Hi Everyone,
Not being a US collector as such, I'm out of my depth on this cover.

Image Not Found

The dealer thought it was a Scott#94 and he placed the date Aug 2nd (1868-70), but he also thought that it had been opened in 1855, which would make it much earlier. When I showed it to David (AMSD) he thought that is was earlier than a #94 and would have been during the Civil War because after the Civil War the Northern Army where not at a Division strength, and this is addressed to Harvey Reid in the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Division.

Thoughts?

Regards ... Tim.

re: Need some help identifying the date on an Owatonna to Chattanooga from the Boxborough show

It's most likely Scott 65 (unlikely, but possibly 64) issued in 1861. The cover appears to be a Civil War era cover and would not likely be dated after 1865.

Given that the letter is addressed to a soldier stationed in or near Chattanooga suggests that the letter would have been mailed most likely in 1863, and possibly 1864. The period from late summer 1863 to mid summer 1864 covers the Battle of Chattanooga, and the preparation for the March on Atlanta.

There is a famous Harvey Reid from the 22nd Wisconsin, but I am not sure that is the addressee.

A Scott#94 has an "F" grill. I can't make out if there is a hint of a grill or not.

Hi Dan,
Is there anything I can do scanningwise that would help identify the Grill?

Hi Tim,
Perhaps just showing the stamp by itself with as much detail as possible? Perhaps asking Perry to try to get an idea if there is a grill present?

Sometimes by holding it up to a light source one can sometimes see if there is anything to make out on the backside.

Not much help I'm afraid.

I just learned another method earlier today. Take a piece of tin foil and put it over the stamp. press gently on the tinfoil. Any grill should show up on the tinfoil.

Grills can be hard to detect as they get flattened out over the years. I have one of those lighted magnifying mirrors that I can usually see the tough grills if I turn off the room lights and hold the cover at about a 30 degree angle under the lighted mirror.

i think that worrying about the grill is the wrong approach here. I think the information contained about the addressee should give us enough to be able to keep this to the Civil War or immediately thereafter. Demobilization was fast, with many of the volunteer units heading home within months of the war's cessation. See http://preserve.lehigh.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1167&context=etd for a full discussion. My point here is that the brigade and divisional structure that the cover implies would have similarly been disbanded within months, certainly before the issuance of the grilled stamps. Looking for the grill, merely because a prior owner claims it, in the face of contrary evidence, is likely to generate little.

I don't have ready orders of battle for the Chattanooga area, but that should be fairly easy to find with a little searching. We might find more, better, answers there.

David
