Truly collecting anything postal is an adventure....thankyou for the posting of pictures....Cheryl
What I find fun about this is that on the Minnesota side of the lake there is also a town named Grand Marais. When you first see the town, as you crest the hill leading to it, it is hard to believe you are not at an ocean costal town. It is a beautiful little town, but it gets pretty cold there. It's not unusual for it to be in the 60's up there when we are in the 90's down in the Twin Cities. In the winter it gets really cold up there.
Interesting. I would like to visit that Grand Marais some time. I have had the opposite experience when I've visited Grand Marais, Michigan. It's always been warmer than my home in the lower peninsula but I know that is just my karma. Ha!
Thanks all.

Ah, Bruce, those photographs of the old post office strum my heart strings.

Oh you're making this Michigan gal homesick - I live in Florida now. I grew up not far from Lake Michigan and we used to go out to the beach by South Haven frequently. I miss the fabulous dunes and hunting for petosky stones on the shore.
The old post office in Grand Marais, a small town in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, is no longer open for postal patrons but tourists can stop and take a photo or two. I thought I would share some of the photos I took in one of my favorite small towns hugging the shore of Lake Superior. I didn't spot a date for the building but people have been living in Grand Marais for more than one hundred years. The photo with the image of the mail slot is a close up of the post office front door.
I've been going up there for years but not often enough. About two blocks away, the new post office, another small building off Main Street, no longer had any of the $2 Jenny sheets back in late May. The postmistress politely informed me that a man walked in and bought all she had ordered; ten sheets, I think. I thought perhaps I would have snagged one of the 100 right side up sheets but alas...
Rolf and I enjoyed our week long stay in Grand Marais at the Hilltop Cabins, an old haunt of mine. We were upgraded to a cabin upon arrival because the motel (5 units) had lost all its power. Grand Marais is a wonderful location to unwind, walk various beaches (looking for agates or other curious rocks) and head out in any direction to explore all the natural beauty.
Departing from the philatelic images, I've included a few Lake Superior sunset photos taken while Rolf and I explored the town beach just on the other side of the Grand Marais bay.
