Is anyone else getting this problem or should I call my IT fella (hubby.) I'm only getting the delay loading pages here on SOR - all other sites seem to be OK. Sometimes the pages load, sometimes a long delay then the fault message. Thanks so much for helping me pinpoint the problem!

Yes - same problem on both my laptop and desktop. Sometimes it loads, sometimes I get the This webpage is not available message. No problems on any other sites that I've tried including ebay, facebook, yahoo mail and a few others. We're stumped. Any ideas?

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

It happens to me occasionally. Most of the time, I try again in a couple of minutes and all is fine. Sites go down for a few minutes at times, and I do not worry unless it stays down for an extended period. When it happens, always try to access another web page (I always use Google). If you get the same message, then it is a problem with your internet service. If not, then it is an issue with the SOR site - just come back later and it should be back up.

BTW, SOR has a Facebook page where notices are posted when the site is down for extended periods. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stamporamacom/357736477581687

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

Absolutely agree with all that Bobby - I use google as my home page because it loads faster than anything and is a good test. I've had intermittent problems in the past, but nothing like what I'm getting today. I've tried all my usual tricks - clear caches, try different browser, different computer, etc. So after all that I thought I'd see if anyone else had the problem. It is erratic - I might get a few normal loads then next page won't load. Maybe the server folks are doing an upgrade today or something. I'm trying to upload an approval book which is of course graphics heavy, so I'm probably working the system harder than a casual, browsing visitor. I tried to upload the same page several times and finally decided to go putz on another project and wait and see. Thanks so much for the tip about Facebook - I found out about that a while back and it is a great way to find out what's up if the site goes down.

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

I was having that problem last week. I finally gave up - it was almost every time I tried to access a page. Or I'd finally get on one page and then it would tell me I couldn't access anything else. Came back later that day and everything was ok so i figured the server was being wonky.

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

No, it is not the server being wonky. If others are not having a problem at the same time, it is usually a routing problem with the Internet somewhere between where you are and the Stamporama server.

You can check this by doing a "trace route". Open a DOS window in your windows program (it's under "Accessories -- Command prompt")

At the prompt type "tracert stamporama.com" and press enter.

Your resulting display will look something like this:

Tracing route to stamporama.com {65.18.196.159}

This shows all the hops over the Internet your ISP used to get you here. The three columns represent three trials. Any numbers over 200 ms (milliseconds) represent a slowdown at that router. Any "fails" are real problems. When having problems, you will frequently see the problem half way along the route. I have often called my ISP with problem spots, and they managed to contact the downstream location with the problem and get it straightened out. Sometimes, it's just a router along the way that nobody has noticed is not working properly. If there is a high number at the "fastdns.net" level, our hosting company is having network problems.

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

tracert stamporama.com > trace.txt

The ">" directs the output to a text file called "trace.txt" in whatever folder you are working in. The output will not show on the screen.

If your output uses square brackets around the IP addresses, you will have to replace those before you can upload to this Discussion Board, because the DB interprets them as formatting commands and will generate error messages. You can do that with a "replace" command in most text processors.

I agree, that's incredibly slow. Are you on a low-speed connection? I ask because hop #2 is the connection to your local ISP, and unless you are on a dialup modem, that's too slow. I'd talk to them and send them a copy of this trace route.

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

Hi Tim & Everyone;

I've had that same error message. I once even had a dead link "Jump to this discussion" at the bottom of the e-mail. When you MouseOver it, there is no pointy finger cursor, just the arrow. That only happened once I think. But the error message "web page not available" has happened about 8-10 times in last few weeks. Sad

I should leave the dark-side and go with the force to Macintosh instead of Windows. Windows OS is just a mine field. Never uninstall a program on this stupid OS unless you have an IT tech sitting next to you. You can very easily end up accidentally trashing or damaging some .dll files, and then other software programs will misbehave.

My next computer will definitely be a Apple for sure. I like machines that are more intuitive to use without all the cryptic junk. The machine should be able to learn how I want to work, instead of me having to learn all of its querks.

On an Apple machine when you open a file in a certain folder with a software application, it will remember that for you, and when you next click on "open" it will present the same folder for you. Apple knew to do this over 20 years ago!!!!

I always had the feeling, the people who wrote the code for Windows had never used a computer in their life. Or else why would they design an OS that is so obtuse and illogical to users. Just because code may seem logical to the machine it runs on, doesn't mean it will appear logical to humans.

God, that felt good. I've wanted to say that for years. Rolling On The Floor Laughing

On a more serious note, I would like to thank Tim Auld, and Roy and everyone of you who have been responsible for the design of this website. I recently visited stampbears.com. I was not able to join there, as my browser is very old, but I found their message board very informative, however I would never sell there. Their page load times are 5-10 times as long as on here. So for my old computer, that site would be useless for selling on. I did find some very knowledgeable members with good answers for problems.

Out here in the woods with these noisy phone lines, my 56K dial-up modem, will only run at 28,800 bps. Yet my load times are about 15 sec. from Google-to-SOR Home page. And most other pages without large images also load in under 20-30 sec. I have never had a page load problem once I'm inside of this webasite, and never had a Java script get stuck in a loop and freeze, like it does on most every other site.

Go with the force....
I must obey my (WIN98) master.... Rolling On The Floor Laughing

Happy collecting everyone

Ken, are you seriously basing your Windows OS comments on Win98? That came out 16 years ago. Windows 7/8 is not just a newer version of Win98, it's a new OS. But I agree that Apple OS was intuitively easier from the get-go.

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

Hi Everyone;

Yes Doug, it did have a huge edge from the early days, but I'll wager a years pay, that it still does have a slight edge, even today. I think what made Apple great was the fact that Apple forced software developers to conform to their "rules" in an encyclopedic set of tomes.

This caused Macintosh computers to have fewer software choices. I don't think that was a disadvantage, because they were far superior applications in their day, and still are. They helped Adobe develop "PostScript" which later morphed into windows "True Type", which is universal today. I really miss those days of fun computing. "He who dies with the most fonts wins" Rolling On The Floor Laughing

I have taught myself HTML and XHTML page source coding for web pages and frequently rewrite some of the code for my eBid listings as well as other sites, as their text editors, have way to many useless tags and make source code almost unreadable. When I finish coding a page I save as a template for later use. As a result, my web page code could be read by a ten year old.

Here is a sample if you want to peek at my page coding: http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/brazil-1993-2414-used-pair-15-000-71-000-cr-national-capitols-brasilia-98368032.htm

When the listing opens, select a text string of several words in the first paragraph of the item description, and then open View > Page Source. Paste the text string from the description into "find" and you will see the full description as I have written it.

Disclaimer: This is not an attempt to sell anyone anything, just a sample of good clean code.

Many websites have problems displaying special characters unless you use the XHTML anpersand codes; &(character name);. So ½ = &+frac12+; will yield the fraction 1/2. If they are used you won't end up with weird characters in text descriptions. I had to add the plus signs to display on here, cause HTML tags don't work in here. So omiting the plus signs would give the ½ symbol.

Happy collecting everyone

Yes - same size scans I've used for all my approvals - no changes.

BUT - I just got into the site on the first try! No wait! Yeehaw!

re: August 5 - - is anyone else getting "This webpage is not available" messages?

Tracing route to stamporama.com {65.18.196.159}

How did you copy the data? I was going to copy mine and share it, but cut and paste doesn't work in the DOS window and I'm too lazy to type all those numbers. Thanks in advance!

tracert stamporama.com > trace.txt

Hi Tim & Everyone;

Hi Everyone;
