A great query, John.
I've often wondered why some sellers seem to close so quickly that we, (Meaning me.) often do not have the time to check the stamp out while others will let the item in bidding limbo for as much as two weeks.
I rather like to run though the offerings, moving items of interest to the watch list, and then when I have the time, to look through my album for that country and that stamp.
Any item on the board for less than three or four days gets lost before I get to checking my album, my stock books and sometimes to see if it is in one of the envelopes of that nation's stamps received but not yet processed.
So, I too would like to understand certain seller's thinking.
I am sure there are several reasons I do not know about
Great question!
I'm experimenting with different times right now. I'm leaning towards 7 day auctions as the best length. That gives everyone a chance to see them on their "stamp day" but not so long as to make the wait to close seem like it is taking forever. I did list some penny lots at two weeks just to see what would happen, but now I wish I had made those only 7 days, too. I like to "clear the decks" of the old sales and tidy up the invoices before I list new a new batch, and now I'm stuck waiting a whole fortnight to wrap it up.
I'd love to hear more opinions - what do you prefer? Days? Weeks?
I tend to list my auctions for 5 or 7 or 10 days depending on what I have on my personal agenda for that week. I think it's nice to run the listings over a weekend or two to close on a Monday, but it doesn't always work out that way for me.

I don't use the auction as a seller too often since the advent of Stamporama "approvals" since most of what I have to offer fits well into the latter category. However, when I do offer something in the auction I like to give it at least a week's availability, and I like to have the closing day be Sunday. This is merely because Monday is the best day for me to invoice and prepare lots for mailing.

Seven days seems about right for me, also. Like Charlie said, I think a lot of people miss out on the 5 day lots, unless they do run through a weekend. I've also tried 10 and 14 day auctions, but those get to'o boring, and don't seem to produce anymore results.

How do other members decide how long an auction should run? What goes into the thought process?
