I joined up a couple weeks ago and haven’t found time to look around or join in yet. This is my first post!

My grandpa got me into collecting when I was in grade school but then I slowly lost interest in it as I got older. He started collecting as a child as well, then became a dealer for many years, one of his grandfathers had a stamp shop in Minnesota (don’t know much about it unfortunately).

In 2005, my grandpa passed and I inherited his collection. I discovered that my aunt had sold off all of the stamps he had purchased over the years as investments, so the collection I have is mostly the things he collected when he was young and some things that were handed down to him.

He’s got a lot of great stuff. I’m hoping to scan and post some things soon!

I'm currently looking to collect early California covers, especially San Francisco and my hometown of Palo Alto/Stanford.

Welcome, Jon.

It's nice that you are continuing your Grandfather's stamp collection. A true family heirloom.

Hi Jon, very glad you are with us. Do you have the name of your great great grandfather who used to have the stamp store in Minnesota? We had a question just a few weeks back about someone who used to have a stamp store in the Twin Cities area, way back.

Regards ... Tim

I'll look through the things I have and post the name of the shop when I can find it. I'm pretty sure that it was my grandpa's grandpa Foster, and that he used his name for the business.

Welcome to the site, and the world of stamp collecting. You may be in for a surprise, early SF bay area covers can be quite dear, because most early San Francisco covers fall into several different catagories, Gold Rush Mail being one of them, and there is a large demand for quality early California covers in general.
