The green bisect does not have perforations on the left side - looks like it has been cut with pinking shears. The bisect is fabricated, most likely by a collector who wanted an unusual cover. I do not collect machins, but I like the cover.
As it comes from an old-fashioned coil dispenser, I would say the buyer was impatient and pulled on the strip before it had been properly dispensed.
Or what bobby said.
Yes, as londonbus1 says, the 2p green stamp has been cut by the teeth in a coil machine.
Hi Roy;
That was my first thought, that the coil machine or the buyer messed up. Perhaps the bottom two stamps had to be added to make up for the bad stamp, to make up the proper amount of postage.
However, it probably adds some value for the right buyer, if you add our conclusions to your description, as to why it ended up that way.

The bottom 2p stamp was most likely part of the coil too. I think it was a 5-stamp coil, 2 bands on the 2x2p stamps which were on the right side of the halfpence stamp as we look at it.
Nice cover, a novelty.
What about a 'Novelty cover' thread !!
This decimal Machin multi-value coil strip was first issued on 15 Feb 1971 (SG X841n). You can see the arrangement of the values and phosphor strips below (the 2nd one down):

Interesting web site....I am new at collecting Machins and this was most helpful....Thankyou I am told that these are multivalue coils. Are there more than 13?
The rate is correct for an 1/2oz Airmail letter to Canada. So I think that the bisect is just there as a result of what Londonbus and NigelC have stated.

A curious oddity to add some interesting variation to a collection.
Please save me from poring through the Machin listings. Is this cover special? It appears to have a green stamp with a perforated bisect with no denomination on the bisect half.
Is this anything special? Or is it a booklet variety I'm not seeing? The perforations are much rougher than the perfs around the edges.
