I do not know if this helps, but the first sentence in the Wikipedia entry for Champlain is: "Champlain is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States"
Could it not be just some sort of direction aid? Something like send to Clinton County, and from there get it to Champlain?
I don't think so as there would have been no need to do so. Champlain is a primary border crossing into Canada and was founded by Pliny Moor while still wilderness in the late 1700's. Anyone in Ballston (or NYS for that matter) would have been as familiar with the town of Champlain as they would have been with Clinton County.
On the other hand I suppose it could have been an early route marking of some sort as mail routes in that era were tenuous at based and depending to some extent on the severity of the winter and other natural factors.
Thank you for your response..it kept me busy on Google for awhile..
Hi Everyone;
I'm just curious, how is it possible, that you have had this cover for years, but your scan has an eBay watermark in the lower right corner? Or is it more like you are thinking of buying this if one of us can identify this?
I too have downloaded eBay images, but mostly for identification/research purposes. Technically I think it is a violation of copyright law when I do this, so don't tell mom I'm doin' it!!

It's probably the image I played with prior to purchasing it several years ago - I just now pulled the cover out of my NYS box and scanned it again ...... OK ?????
I am a retired college professor and I am quite well versed on copyright laws...... unfortunately I didn't notice that I used the copy from Ebay that I used in researching the item prior to purchase until you pointed it out and I thank you for that.
Hi Everyone;
@ webpaper & everyone;
I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for my remark to be accusatory and I'm not a very good communicator I guess. I sometimes feel like the "Sheldon Cooper" of stamp collecting. Just thought it was funny tho.

No problem whatsoever, I like this scan a lot better anyway ..and I do thank you for noticing the watermark - I would have knocked a students grade down a couple of notches for that.
So the letter is addressed to the person who founded Champlain? That's cool!
I've had this stampless cover for several years and have been unable to figure out whether the manuscript is a PO or route marking. It is datelined Ballston and is dated 1804. It was a short business letter from Eliphalet Kellogg to Pliny Moor
There is no post office named "Clinton County" in New York State. To add a bit to the mystery Ballston is in Saratoga County. The rate marking is correct for the distance between Ballston and Champlain at the time of mailing.
Would love to hear some thoughts ...
