I had the same thing happen to me, but there didn't appear to be any nefarious reason. In my case the seller had the item listed on multiple venues and it sold on another venue first. It wasn't a particularly special or high-priced item, so that made sense.
Lars
I agree with Lars. I have had to end auction items early for various reasons, like I sent the item by mistake in a package to the wrong person, the item got broken, the item was listed wrong, the item was lost, I decided to keep the item, etc. The seller has the right to end an item early at the seller's discretion, with limitations. I don't recall eBay's limit, but BidStart's was a seller could not end an auction early that had less than 24 hours remaining before the item closed.
You will find that most auction houses will have in their auction terms that they have a right to withdraw an item at any time for any reason.
I had that happen this week, and it was the only time I've had it happen. It was on the 1926 White Plains Expo Sheet. It was well centered, and from a seller with over 47000 feedback. I asked about it, and he told me that it should not have been listed and apologized for the inconvenience. I've bought from this seller numerous times with great success, and I don't think there was anything nefarious about it happening.
I think this just happens some times.
Stan
One main reason for this happening is because sellers list the same item on multiple auction sites and then forget to timely update the other websites when the item is sold.
Further to my "problem" with a withdrawn eBay lot: I wrote to the seller, who told me that he was helping out a friend and that the item in question would be relisted. It was, at a Buy It Now price about 10 times more than the original opening bid. Looks like the owner decided it was worth more. In any event, I went ahead and bought it, and I've been informed that it has been posted.

Well, Bob, at least you got (or will get) the desired item albeit at a higher price. I've only had this happen once and the reason was that the item was sold elsewhere before the ebay auction was over.
As a seller on ebay, I have been asked through private messages to end an auction early and accept an offer made in that message. Apparently they were trying to avoid competition. I have never ended an auction early; I just let it run it's course and take what I get.

Here's the link to the item that I was bidding on, and I don't know if it has been relisted yet or not. I really like the quality of this seller.

I just received an email from eBay
The email:
"Dear eBay Community Member,
"The bid that you entered for the item (221623654156) has been cancelled. You can view the reason provided for the cancellation by selecting the (bid history) link from the individual item page.
"Please be cautious if you are contacted about purchasing this item after the bid has been cancelled and as always avoid paying for your eBay item using instant wire transfer services through Western Union or MoneyGram as these payment methods are unsafe when paying someone you do not know."
When I checked eBay, there was this notice on the listing: ""This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."
This is the first time in I've ever had anything like this happen. The seller, in Beijing, has more than 2500 eBay transactions to his credit, and a 100% satisfaction rating.
Too bad. It was a cover I would like to have added to my collection, franked with a Chinese stamp commemorating Algeria's independence in 1962.
