I agree! Perhaps there are also other reasons, but in my opinion unless the reason is they have no bank account, none of those reasons are very good. PayPal is a safe and easy method of paying for goods and services. Since I do almost all my buying online these days, I will often check to make sure a seller accepts either PayPal or credit cards before looking at what they have to offer.
At present there is only one Seller on SOR who refuses to accept PayPal from whom I buy, and that is more out of loyalty than for any other reason.
If you do accept PayPal, and want to recoup your fees on small sales, add a handling charge to your sales. However, the handling charge needs to apply to all sales as PayPal prohibits charging such fees if they only apply to PayPal sales.

I agree wholeheartedly! The fees are easily offset by a minimal handling fee. I charge everyone 25c to cover fees and other costs like envelopes, paper etc. No one has ever complained about the extra quarter. If they had to send the payment in the mail, their costs would be double that and more for international buyers because of the postage. And PayPal really simplifies everything - Most of my buyers pay within a day or two of receiving their invoices so I can ship most items quickly and in one large group. I don't have to worry about payments lost in the mail and I don't have to make a trip to the bank to make a deposit. There are no problems with currency conversion costs. Those advantages are worth the fees.
If you don't want to use PayPal because you want to get payments in the mail franked with cool stamps on the covers, well don't hold your breath! Over half of the payments I receive are mailed with common definitives. The money you lose by not using PayPal could buy a lot of nice stamps.
I'm still happy to accept cash, checks and so on - whatever makes the buyer happy is fine with me. But - judging from what I've seen - what makes most buyers happy is the convenience of PayPal!

True, but they are dealing with the customer face to face. Our situation is different because of the costs (and risks!) of mailing the payment to the seller. And offering a discount for cash purchases would be rather tricky to manage and would give domestic buyers an unfair advantage over international buyers. Again, the buyers don't really end up saving very much because of the postage to mail the cash.

I think that unreasoned fear and distrust of the internet is the primary reason that sellers don't use PayPal. But I think that PayPal and other non-cash/chequeless payment systems are far safer than the "good old days" when we would cheerfully hand over our credit cards to gas station attendants and waiters, and risk loss of cash in the mails.
I too avoid sellers who don't use PayPal. As to PayPal fees: I would much rather pay a small additional fee for the privilege of using PayPal than incur the hassle of writing cheques or buying money orders and mailing them. Besides, mailing cash can lead to death. A Republican senator told me of a case where a collector always paid for stamps or covers with cash sent by mail. While he never had a loss, he died, perhaps because of worry that he would lose his money. The Senator blamed President Obama.

Most people today have bank accounts. Employers use direct deposit for paydays, the government uses direct deposit for welfare, Social Security, tax refunds, child support, food "stamps".
When I first started selling on the internet in the 1990s, sales were next to nothing. Getting a merchant account to accept credit cards was cost prohibitive. Then along came PayPal, and my sales skyrocketed. Many times I have broken even or was in the negative a little bit from a sale, but the buyer's return and buy more, and overall sales are in the positive.
It's better than having the unwanted stamps sitting around taking up space. I don't even have enough room for the stamps I want for myself!

My wife and I hardly ever have to stand in line at the bank these days. In the past, it sometimes felt like we spent half our Saturdays there, depositing cheques, buying money orders, checking balances, getting cash, etc. Now our Canada Pension payments and OAP (Old Age Pension*) cheques are deposited electronically, as are my VA disability cheques. We pay for most things these days with cash (easily obtained at nearby ATMs) or with credit cards and debit cards. We have never had to pay any charges for using our credit cards, since we always pay our monthly balance. Only one time has my credit card been compromised: MasterCard called to ask if I'd purchased a computer in Las Vegas. I hadn't, and I don't know how someone got hold of my MasterCard data.
My one other problem with digital payment was with PayPal, but the problem wasn't PayPal, it was a Stamporama seller in China who ripped off several Stamporama members. I called PayPal, and got all but a couple of dollars back.

* Can't someone come up with a more positive name for "Old Age Pension"? How about "Golden Age Gift," or GAG? That would work. Lots of younger people wish that we more-intelligent, experienced people would just shut the hell up!

I know how one bad experience can poison relationships. In this case, however, I have to say that if we have a "bad apple" in the Stamporama barrel, we have a hundred good ones, most of whom do use PayPal. I hope you give us another chance.

Each seller on SOR is independent of the other. If one pisses me off, I don't buy from that seller again. There are plenty of sellers here 99.9% who are great people, and there is a good number who take PayPal. Saying that you won't buy here because of a few is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I am sure that everyone on this board are good folks. I did not mean to cast any aspersions on anyone and if I offended anyone, I apologize. Since it has been a while since my last perusing of sor auctions, I did take a look at US, Canada, any Yakima covers and if anyone had any zeppelin stamps or covers. I did put a bid on some US mint stamps which I will use for postage(if I win), but the only item I might have been interested in had a very small image and nothing for the back of the stamp. I did see a Yakima cover, but seller does not accept paypal. I will check from time to time to see if something comes up.

I can't imagine not using paypal. I probably wouldn't buy as many stamps if I didn't have it, because I just use the money I make selling stamps, to buy more.
I won't buy from anyone who doesn't accept paypal, and I do prefer to be paid though paypal, even if it's just a small amount. I don't mind. It all adds up.
And I do accept other forms of payment as well, depending on where it's coming from.

Possibly I've overlooked this reason why some people are Paypal wary.
A buyer in China 60 days or so after the sale and shipment indicated to Paypal that he did not receive his stamps. I believe buyers have 120 days from original payment date to file a claim. The $80 he paid was removed from my account and frozen in Paypal limbo. On this occasion, I had that $80 in the account otherwise unless I am mistaken, Paypal would have pulled that $80 from my bank account to place in their frozen limbo while an investigation ensued.
Fortunately, I had followed all the steps required by the eBay partner insurance program and the buyer electronically signed a document from that insurance company attesting that under penalty of fraud he stated that he did not receive my shipment. The insurer deposited the $80 to my Paypal account and I refunded the buyer which triggered the release of the seized $80 of my money waiting patiently in Paypal limbo.
The stories I have heard from anti-Paypal folks tend to follow a line that indicates shipment of stamps, including large purchases were shipped off without insurance of any kind or possibly Registered Mail was used which is not recognized by Paypal if a delivery is lost since Registered Mail cannot be tracked online. They ended up getting burned. If I hadn't utilized the insurance carrier I, too would have been burned. The cost to send $80 worth of covers with electronic trackking to China insured would be, I'm guessing, at least $50 or more.
Some folks do not like the way money can be seized from personal accounts and held in abeyance until the issue is resolved.
Typically, and predictably, I forget to send a check to non Paypal folks but eventually realize I didn't use Paypal, the most common form of payment reflecting my buying habits and then must apologize and get that check in the mail.

I've had several positive experiences paying by check recently. They were positive in the sense that they were nostalgic, and served as a slight counterbalance to the impersonal, fast, digital, virtual world we now live in.
First I had to get an envelope, then write a short note, remember how to complete a check 
, address the envelope, put real stamps on the envelope, and then take the envelope to the Post Office to have it hand cancelled. Yes it took longer, but when I had finished, I almost felt human again!

And how many of these "bad" transactions have you had compared to all the good ones? How many millions of transactions have been made through PayPal over the time that PayPal has been online? How many of those are good and how many bad. Probably a very low percentage.
I have been selling using PayPal for 10 years. 100% no problems.
I have received several bad checks, though. So, I should poo poo everyone who pays by check if I follow the logic that PayPal is no good, because of one incident.
Follow instructions, and you won't have any problems. Try to take the cheap way out, and some unscrupulous buyers are savvy enough to know that you cut corners, and they will make you pay for it. It isn't PayPal, it's how you use it.

Personally, I do not think that Paypal is bad however I do think that they could be more upfront about the correct types of mail services that are accepted--ie online delivery confirmed services--only.
As I mentioned, many sellers, first time or otherwise, were conditioned to believe that sending, in this case, stamps by registered mail protected them against loss when that service did not protect them according to Paypal.
If I ran Paypal, I would have a link to a page titled: REGISTERED MAIL IS NOT AN ACCEPTED FORM OF DELIVERY WHEN MAIL IS LOST.
Seems like it would save a lot of people headaches. Relying on social Darwinism should be anathema to a business. Clearly passing along information that will prove to be helpful is not.

That is a common misconception regarding registered mail. If you want protection from loss using registered mail, you have to purchase insurance.

I generally use PayPal, but there are a few (mostly older) sellers that won't accept it. That makes me less likely to buy initially, but if I do make an initial purchase and have a positive outcome, I am willing to put that seller into the mix. I have established a few very profitable relationships with non-PayPal sellers. In some cases I don't have to compete with as many prospective buyers.
It is happening with less frequency and this whole discussion may become moot in 5 years or less.
The big question is this: Who will compete with PayPal? Will Google come up with a universal payment scheme? Or will a new company emerge with a better mousetrap? Fun to watch!

Hi Everyone;
It is surprising how few people know this, but PayPal is owned by Feebay. Delcampe has
started accepting Skrill and Moneybookers, mostly because of the dislike for Feebay extends
to PayPal as well.
Feebay also has a policy of sellers can only offer PayPal as a payment method. NO CHECKS,
CASH, OR MONEY ORDERS ALLOWED!!
The Australian government warned them, that they were in violation of anti-trust laws, and
to cease that policy or be banned from doing business in Australia. The last time I checked
www.ebay.au does allow other payment methods, and all other countries only PayPal.
This has caused much hatred for eBay in general and many folks carry that hatred of their
greedy policies over to PayPal as well. Their greed makes Delcampe a much better place to
do business, IF you can read French tho.

Time to bring this up-to-date.
In September 2014, PayPal and eBay announced that they will split and become separate corporations. The separation is expected to be complete by the second half of 2015, subject to approval by the appropriate regulatory agencies. eBay and PayPal will be their own separate publicly traded companies.

I just tried ebay and they would not let me use of forms of payment.
I received this message when I tried :-
"As of April 23, 2009, you will be unable to list your item if a paper payment is referenced as part of your payment instructions for in person transactions, outside of a few limited categories called out within the Accepted Payments policy. This includes, but is not limited to, references to cash, checks, and money order.
Although you may offer payment upon pick-up as an option when listings your items, you cannot openly solicit paper payments. For example, you are not allowed to say, “I accept cash in person†or “Money orders are allowed for in person transactions only.†Instead, we recommend you say, “Contact me for payment methods to pay on pick-up.â€
Please note that these changes are being made to align with our Safe Payments policy"

Several of my Ebay customers pay by check - they email me through the "Ask seller a question" function. Admittedly Ebay's crawlers make it so you have to disguise some contact information (think it's mainly your email address) but it isn't difficult to do.
If you just say "contact me for other terms of payment" in your GT&C it's smooth sailing, mostly.
Once Paypal is totally split I presume it will become easier, although I am sure you may still be "encouraged" to use Paypal depending on the terms of sale agreement.

Glad to hear that they are parting company, but will not hold my breath, from knowing of
Feebay's past. I've a keen interest in the other forms of payment policy, as I may sell there
again if their rules change. They are definitely the 900 lb. gorilla in the 6x8 room!!

I copied the payment options that are available to sellers from eBay help:
Payment methods accepted
Select the payment methods you'll accept from buyers.
Before you can offer them in your listing, you need to select at least one of these online payment methods and register with the processing company.
PayPal, ProPay, or Skrill
Credit or debit card payments through your Internet merchant account (you'll need to register for a Payflow payment gateway account, a free service for eBay sellers).
Payment upon pickup—you can choose the payment method you prefer, including cash.
Money orders, cashier's check, personal checks, and bank wire transfers are not allowed for most eBay purchases.

You know, I've been accepting checks since 1985 by mail order, at shows, and for two years when I had a storefront. Most have been under $100 but some have been in the low 4 figures. In all that time I have had exactly one bounce - that was from a college student when I had my antique shop and I was pretty certain it would - it was for $30. I wrote her dad (address on the check) and passed it off to bad math - he replaced the check and added the $20 fee.
Anyway - it is a buyer - seller transaction that Ebay has no part in except extracting it's pound of flesh - I really don't think they care, they are just putting themselves in an "I told you so" position...

You know I used that song verbatim in my retirement letter to my co-workers a few years ago, along with a complimentary quote from John Lennon:

My PayPal account is suspended because I defaulted on their PayPal credit. I got laid off and got behind. I tried contacting them to resume payments but they don't seem to want to communicate. So I'm sitting on a ton of worldwide material and no outlet. Because of one company. I can't sell on eBay anymore. I have to purchase an eBay card to buy on eBay. There has to be alternatives. B.S.

Open a new Paypal account. Get a new email address, and a new cheap (no fees) bank account to hook it to. Don't hook it to a credit card. Use a different address if you can.

There are also plenty of online sites which will sell you an existing eBay, Paypal account, and matching bank account; they typically come with a significant number of positive feedbacks.

Doesn’t EBay have it in their terms that they must approve the sale of turnkey businesses and if they don’t the buyer of said accounts can be at risk for all sorts of problems?
I’m sure those sales happen all the time, and I know I sound like a prim little Miss Girl Scout, but dang I wouldn’t feel right using feedback I didn’t earn.

Not seen it mentioned but I think that a reason sellers do not use PayPal could be that there is a record of the monetary transaction that will be made available to the revenue, possibly resulting in taxation and an investigation.
For myself I will only purchase from sellers who accept PayPal, easy, convenient, safe. I have it linked to my bank account, credit cards in UK and Canada so that I can minimise foreign transaction/currency conversion fees.
On the one occasion when I purchased from a seller here who did not accept PayPal it cost me more to buy the money order than the total of the purchase, never again.

I was able to get a PayPal business account using my ein# and a different email. eBay is going to start handling payments without a 3rd party commerce agent from what I understand.

Going through the Auction pages and every time I see a stamp I want and get excited about I read the sellers details and it says NO PAYPAL, often following by USA cheques (checks) etc only.
Not going to bother looking at auctions anymore, at least I've found a few good sellers on the approvals that I can do business with (when I see the books in time, hehe).

My "unrequested advice" for the day:
Not all sellers are "No Paypal".
Don't give up on the auctions. Do this:
- Browse the auctions.
- When you find a seller whose terms are acceptable (the first one I checked was in the UK, like you, and was "Paypal ONLY"), click on the link "View all (username) auctions".
- Bookmark (save as favourite) that page by Pressing Crtl-D on your keyboard. Create a folder just for your Stamporama Auction links
- the link will be of the format https://stamporama.com/auction/auction_main.php?action=13&user=BrechiniteUK (Picked because he is a regular, is in the UK and takes ONLY Paypal).
- Henceforth, do your auction shopping by clicking through your list of bookmarks in the Bookmarks folder you created. Browse the general auction listings only to find additional sellers who accept Paypal in order to add them to your list.
In the meantime, I am going to write to Tim with an idea that might solve the problem without too much of his time.

Roy brought this thread to my attention and asked me to make it clear when a seller is setup to take PayPal and when they are not. With the approval of the Management Team I have made the following changes:
1. In the Auction List screen you now see the following icon when the seller is setup to take PayPal.
2. In the Auction Lot Details screen, where you place a bid, you will see the above icon attached to the bottom of the Seller's Terms and Conditions. It will note there whether the Seller requires a minimum invoice amount to use PayPal or not.
3. Similarly in the Approval Books, at the top of each page you will see whether the Seller is setup to accept PayPal or not. Also at the bottom of each page, in the notes, it will state whether or not the seller requires a minimum invoice amount to use PayPal.
I hope this helps clarify the PayPal issue.

Thanks Tim. I see on my listings at the bottom with the Paypal icon it states Invoice minimum is $1.00. I do not have that in my terms. I have Paypal minimum of $5.00 an invoice under $5.00 there is a handling charge.

I notice that my auction listings DO NOT have the Paypal sign but others do!!!!
AND
others that take paypal are the same, eg stampfair, WestCoastStamps
AS the paypal button appears on ALL my invoices I assume that the paypal sign SHOULD appear on ALL my Auction listings.
The Paypal sign DOES appear on my Approval Book pages.
I would be obliged if this situation was rectifide toot sweet, at once, if not sooner, when you have time, at the appropriate juncture, in the fullness of time....

There is a bigger problem than that.
Ever since I joined Stamporama I have had the paypal option set up BUT for some reason the new paypal icon is not on my Auction listings.
It is on my Approval Book pages however.
I advise EVERY Seller to check their listings!

I have finally discovered why the paypal icon did not appear with my auction lots.
It was a fault within the Stamporama system.
If Tim or anybody else wants to know how and why please send a brown envelope stuffed with cash to my home address to reach me no later than 12 noon on the 32nd of December.

Not to keep everyone in suspense here is the solution:-
It had nothing to do with the "Set up Paypal" section.
I wondered why it was visible in the Approvals and not in the Auction.
The reason it occurred that way was because My members name is Brechinite, My Approval name is Brechinite BUT my Auction name
is.......(drum roll)........BrechiniteUK!!
( I stuck the UK on the end to let people know I was based in the UK )
So I have changed my Auction name to Brechinite and Hey Presto..The Paypal Icon now appears at ALL my Auction Lots.
Therefore if anybody else has a different Auction name to that of their "Members Name" I advise you to change it (If you accept Paypal that is.)

I have had a look at what is Closing in 24 hours and the New Items listed to see how many sellers do not take paypal and it makes interesting reading.
Closing in 24 Hours:-
There are 14 Sellers whereby 1 sellers does not take Paypal and 1 Seller does not say they do or not! (the Unknown)
There are 152 items in total, with 17 items non paypal and 6 items unknown
Therefore Percentage of Non Paypal Sellers(inc Unknown) = 14%
Percentage of Non Paypal Items (inc Unknown) = 15%
In the New Items:-
There are 19 Sellers whereby 2 Sellers do not take Paypal, 1 Unknown and 1 who takes Paypal but does not have the Paypal Icon.
There are 783 Items in total, with 62 items non paypal, 4 items unknown and 316 items that takes paypal but has no paypal icon.
Therefore Percentage of Non Paypal Sellers (inc Unknown but excl non icon) = 16%
Percentage of Non Paypal Items (inc Unknown but excl non icon) = 8%
Conclusion:- There is still work to be done to encourage those that do take Paypal to "Set Up Paypal" on their membership otherwise it is still a complete guddle.

Just a question - If I see a person's item and it does not say "PayPal" next to the item does that mean they don't accept PayPal, or does it mean that they just don't use the PayPal icon on their invoices. If it is the second case I can still use PayPal, which is what I would probably try to do anyway using their E-mail as the identifier. There is a place on the invoice where payment method can be specified - some sellers do not specify payment method. This is where I default to PayPal and see what happens.

You want to make certain that the seller does not incur any Paypal costs for the transaction if you don't notify them what you are doing - 30 or 40 cents per transaction (can't remember) plus a percentage of sale / shipping cost. Also that there are no currency exchange charges.

If sellers who take Paypal do not click the "Set Up Paypal" item in the members area then they should be treated as NOT taking Paypal otherwise Tim's hard work of including the paypal icon has been a waste of time.
PLEASE Sellers if you DO take Paypal click on the "Set Up Paypal" button NOW.
Show some respect to other members and the hard work of the volunteers.

I'm the major seller who doesn't take Paypal. 1. I don't have a credit card and am not about to put my debit card # on the internet. 2. Actually, it's not Paypal itself that I can't stand, it dealers who take Paypal and have used abusive language to me because I didn't see
they took only Paypal. 3.I had at one about a 500- 100% feedback on Ebay, one guy gave me bad feedback because I didn't see his only Paypal notice. the irem was only $1.50. offered to send cash plus S&H and pay his Ebay fee. He declined and gave me bad feedback.
4. one other guy on Ebay had a lot that I won and really wanted but he refused to sell it to me because he said he only took Paypal. He didn't state anywhere, he only took Paypal. I filed a complaint with Ebay. They sided with the seller. 5. I used to buy quite a bit from Ebay but now they only take Paypal. that's why I'm pissed at Paypal.

I agree! Perhaps there are also other reasons, but in my opinion unless the reason is they have no bank account, none of those reasons are very good. PayPal is a safe and easy method of paying for goods and services. Since I do almost all my buying online these days, I will often check to make sure a seller accepts either PayPal or credit cards before looking at what they have to offer.
At present there is only one Seller on SOR who refuses to accept PayPal from whom I buy, and that is more out of loyalty than for any other reason.
If you do accept PayPal, and want to recoup your fees on small sales, add a handling charge to your sales. However, the handling charge needs to apply to all sales as PayPal prohibits charging such fees if they only apply to PayPal sales.

I agree wholeheartedly! The fees are easily offset by a minimal handling fee. I charge everyone 25c to cover fees and other costs like envelopes, paper etc. No one has ever complained about the extra quarter. If they had to send the payment in the mail, their costs would be double that and more for international buyers because of the postage. And PayPal really simplifies everything - Most of my buyers pay within a day or two of receiving their invoices so I can ship most items quickly and in one large group. I don't have to worry about payments lost in the mail and I don't have to make a trip to the bank to make a deposit. There are no problems with currency conversion costs. Those advantages are worth the fees.
If you don't want to use PayPal because you want to get payments in the mail franked with cool stamps on the covers, well don't hold your breath! Over half of the payments I receive are mailed with common definitives. The money you lose by not using PayPal could buy a lot of nice stamps.
I'm still happy to accept cash, checks and so on - whatever makes the buyer happy is fine with me. But - judging from what I've seen - what makes most buyers happy is the convenience of PayPal!

True, but they are dealing with the customer face to face. Our situation is different because of the costs (and risks!) of mailing the payment to the seller. And offering a discount for cash purchases would be rather tricky to manage and would give domestic buyers an unfair advantage over international buyers. Again, the buyers don't really end up saving very much because of the postage to mail the cash.

I think that unreasoned fear and distrust of the internet is the primary reason that sellers don't use PayPal. But I think that PayPal and other non-cash/chequeless payment systems are far safer than the "good old days" when we would cheerfully hand over our credit cards to gas station attendants and waiters, and risk loss of cash in the mails.
I too avoid sellers who don't use PayPal. As to PayPal fees: I would much rather pay a small additional fee for the privilege of using PayPal than incur the hassle of writing cheques or buying money orders and mailing them. Besides, mailing cash can lead to death. A Republican senator told me of a case where a collector always paid for stamps or covers with cash sent by mail. While he never had a loss, he died, perhaps because of worry that he would lose his money. The Senator blamed President Obama.

Most people today have bank accounts. Employers use direct deposit for paydays, the government uses direct deposit for welfare, Social Security, tax refunds, child support, food "stamps".
When I first started selling on the internet in the 1990s, sales were next to nothing. Getting a merchant account to accept credit cards was cost prohibitive. Then along came PayPal, and my sales skyrocketed. Many times I have broken even or was in the negative a little bit from a sale, but the buyer's return and buy more, and overall sales are in the positive.
It's better than having the unwanted stamps sitting around taking up space. I don't even have enough room for the stamps I want for myself!

My wife and I hardly ever have to stand in line at the bank these days. In the past, it sometimes felt like we spent half our Saturdays there, depositing cheques, buying money orders, checking balances, getting cash, etc. Now our Canada Pension payments and OAP (Old Age Pension*) cheques are deposited electronically, as are my VA disability cheques. We pay for most things these days with cash (easily obtained at nearby ATMs) or with credit cards and debit cards. We have never had to pay any charges for using our credit cards, since we always pay our monthly balance. Only one time has my credit card been compromised: MasterCard called to ask if I'd purchased a computer in Las Vegas. I hadn't, and I don't know how someone got hold of my MasterCard data.
My one other problem with digital payment was with PayPal, but the problem wasn't PayPal, it was a Stamporama seller in China who ripped off several Stamporama members. I called PayPal, and got all but a couple of dollars back.

Each seller on SOR is independent of the other. If one pisses me off, I don't buy from that seller again. There are plenty of sellers here 99.9% who are great people, and there is a good number who take PayPal. Saying that you won't buy here because of a few is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I am sure that everyone on this board are good folks. I did not mean to cast any aspersions on anyone and if I offended anyone, I apologize. Since it has been a while since my last perusing of sor auctions, I did take a look at US, Canada, any Yakima covers and if anyone had any zeppelin stamps or covers. I did put a bid on some US mint stamps which I will use for postage(if I win), but the only item I might have been interested in had a very small image and nothing for the back of the stamp. I did see a Yakima cover, but seller does not accept paypal. I will check from time to time to see if something comes up.

I can't imagine not using paypal. I probably wouldn't buy as many stamps if I didn't have it, because I just use the money I make selling stamps, to buy more.
I won't buy from anyone who doesn't accept paypal, and I do prefer to be paid though paypal, even if it's just a small amount. I don't mind. It all adds up.
And I do accept other forms of payment as well, depending on where it's coming from.

I use Paypal.
Possibly I've overlooked this reason why some people are Paypal wary.
A buyer in China 60 days or so after the sale and shipment indicated to Paypal that he did not receive his stamps. I believe buyers have 120 days from original payment date to file a claim. The $80 he paid was removed from my account and frozen in Paypal limbo. On this occasion, I had that $80 in the account otherwise unless I am mistaken, Paypal would have pulled that $80 from my bank account to place in their frozen limbo while an investigation ensued.
Fortunately, I had followed all the steps required by the eBay partner insurance program and the buyer electronically signed a document from that insurance company attesting that under penalty of fraud he stated that he did not receive my shipment. The insurer deposited the $80 to my Paypal account and I refunded the buyer which triggered the release of the seized $80 of my money waiting patiently in Paypal limbo.
The stories I have heard from anti-Paypal folks tend to follow a line that indicates shipment of stamps, including large purchases were shipped off without insurance of any kind or possibly Registered Mail was used which is not recognized by Paypal if a delivery is lost since Registered Mail cannot be tracked online. They ended up getting burned. If I hadn't utilized the insurance carrier I, too would have been burned. The cost to send $80 worth of covers with electronic trackking to China insured would be, I'm guessing, at least $50 or more.
Some folks do not like the way money can be seized from personal accounts and held in abeyance until the issue is resolved.
Typically, and predictably, I forget to send a check to non Paypal folks but eventually realize I didn't use Paypal, the most common form of payment reflecting my buying habits and then must apologize and get that check in the mail.

I've had several positive experiences paying by check recently. They were positive in the sense that they were nostalgic, and served as a slight counterbalance to the impersonal, fast, digital, virtual world we now live in.
First I had to get an envelope, then write a short note, remember how to complete a check , address the envelope, put real stamps on the envelope, and then take the envelope to the Post Office to have it hand cancelled. Yes it took longer, but when I had finished, I almost felt human again!

And how many of these "bad" transactions have you had compared to all the good ones? How many millions of transactions have been made through PayPal over the time that PayPal has been online? How many of those are good and how many bad. Probably a very low percentage.
I have been selling using PayPal for 10 years. 100% no problems.
I have received several bad checks, though. So, I should poo poo everyone who pays by check if I follow the logic that PayPal is no good, because of one incident.
Follow instructions, and you won't have any problems. Try to take the cheap way out, and some unscrupulous buyers are savvy enough to know that you cut corners, and they will make you pay for it. It isn't PayPal, it's how you use it.

Personally, I do not think that Paypal is bad however I do think that they could be more upfront about the correct types of mail services that are accepted--ie online delivery confirmed services--only.
As I mentioned, many sellers, first time or otherwise, were conditioned to believe that sending, in this case, stamps by registered mail protected them against loss when that service did not protect them according to Paypal.
If I ran Paypal, I would have a link to a page titled: REGISTERED MAIL IS NOT AN ACCEPTED FORM OF DELIVERY WHEN MAIL IS LOST.
Seems like it would save a lot of people headaches. Relying on social Darwinism should be anathema to a business. Clearly passing along information that will prove to be helpful is not.

I generally use PayPal, but there are a few (mostly older) sellers that won't accept it. That makes me less likely to buy initially, but if I do make an initial purchase and have a positive outcome, I am willing to put that seller into the mix. I have established a few very profitable relationships with non-PayPal sellers. In some cases I don't have to compete with as many prospective buyers.
It is happening with less frequency and this whole discussion may become moot in 5 years or less.
The big question is this: Who will compete with PayPal? Will Google come up with a universal payment scheme? Or will a new company emerge with a better mousetrap? Fun to watch!

Hi Everyone;
It is surprising how few people know this, but PayPal is owned by Feebay. Delcampe has
started accepting Skrill and Moneybookers, mostly because of the dislike for Feebay extends
to PayPal as well.
Feebay also has a policy of sellers can only offer PayPal as a payment method. NO CHECKS,
CASH, OR MONEY ORDERS ALLOWED!!
The Australian government warned them, that they were in violation of anti-trust laws, and
to cease that policy or be banned from doing business in Australia. The last time I checked
www.ebay.au does allow other payment methods, and all other countries only PayPal.
This has caused much hatred for eBay in general and many folks carry that hatred of their
greedy policies over to PayPal as well. Their greed makes Delcampe a much better place to
do business, IF you can read French tho.

Time to bring this up-to-date.
In September 2014, PayPal and eBay announced that they will split and become separate corporations. The separation is expected to be complete by the second half of 2015, subject to approval by the appropriate regulatory agencies. eBay and PayPal will be their own separate publicly traded companies.

I received this message when I tried :-

For example, you are not allowed to say, “I accept cash in person†or “Money orders are allowed for in person transactions only.†Instead, we recommend you say, “Contact me for payment methods to pay on pick-up.â€

Several of my Ebay customers pay by check - they email me through the "Ask seller a question" function. Admittedly Ebay's crawlers make it so you have to disguise some contact information (think it's mainly your email address) but it isn't difficult to do.
If you just say "contact me for other terms of payment" in your GT&C it's smooth sailing, mostly.
Once Paypal is totally split I presume it will become easier, although I am sure you may still be "encouraged" to use Paypal depending on the terms of sale agreement.

I copied the payment options that are available to sellers from eBay help:
Payment methods accepted
Select the payment methods you'll accept from buyers.
Before you can offer them in your listing, you need to select at least one of these online payment methods and register with the processing company.
PayPal, ProPay, or Skrill
Credit or debit card payments through your Internet merchant account (you'll need to register for a Payflow payment gateway account, a free service for eBay sellers).
Payment upon pickup—you can choose the payment method you prefer, including cash.
Money orders, cashier's check, personal checks, and bank wire transfers are not allowed for most eBay purchases.

You know, I've been accepting checks since 1985 by mail order, at shows, and for two years when I had a storefront. Most have been under $100 but some have been in the low 4 figures. In all that time I have had exactly one bounce - that was from a college student when I had my antique shop and I was pretty certain it would - it was for $30. I wrote her dad (address on the check) and passed it off to bad math - he replaced the check and added the $20 fee.
Anyway - it is a buyer - seller transaction that Ebay has no part in except extracting it's pound of flesh - I really don't think they care, they are just putting themselves in an "I told you so" position...

You know I used that song verbatim in my retirement letter to my co-workers a few years ago, along with a complimentary quote from John Lennon:

My PayPal account is suspended because I defaulted on their PayPal credit. I got laid off and got behind. I tried contacting them to resume payments but they don't seem to want to communicate. So I'm sitting on a ton of worldwide material and no outlet. Because of one company. I can't sell on eBay anymore. I have to purchase an eBay card to buy on eBay. There has to be alternatives. B.S.

Open a new Paypal account. Get a new email address, and a new cheap (no fees) bank account to hook it to. Don't hook it to a credit card. Use a different address if you can.

Doesn’t EBay have it in their terms that they must approve the sale of turnkey businesses and if they don’t the buyer of said accounts can be at risk for all sorts of problems?
I’m sure those sales happen all the time, and I know I sound like a prim little Miss Girl Scout, but dang I wouldn’t feel right using feedback I didn’t earn.

Not seen it mentioned but I think that a reason sellers do not use PayPal could be that there is a record of the monetary transaction that will be made available to the revenue, possibly resulting in taxation and an investigation.
For myself I will only purchase from sellers who accept PayPal, easy, convenient, safe. I have it linked to my bank account, credit cards in UK and Canada so that I can minimise foreign transaction/currency conversion fees.
On the one occasion when I purchased from a seller here who did not accept PayPal it cost me more to buy the money order than the total of the purchase, never again.

Going through the Auction pages and every time I see a stamp I want and get excited about I read the sellers details and it says NO PAYPAL, often following by USA cheques (checks) etc only.
Not going to bother looking at auctions anymore, at least I've found a few good sellers on the approvals that I can do business with (when I see the books in time, hehe).

My "unrequested advice" for the day:
Not all sellers are "No Paypal".
Don't give up on the auctions. Do this:
- Browse the auctions.
- When you find a seller whose terms are acceptable (the first one I checked was in the UK, like you, and was "Paypal ONLY"), click on the link "View all (username) auctions".
- Bookmark (save as favourite) that page by Pressing Crtl-D on your keyboard. Create a folder just for your Stamporama Auction links
- the link will be of the format https://stamporama.com/auction/auction_main.php?action=13&user=BrechiniteUK (Picked because he is a regular, is in the UK and takes ONLY Paypal).
- Henceforth, do your auction shopping by clicking through your list of bookmarks in the Bookmarks folder you created. Browse the general auction listings only to find additional sellers who accept Paypal in order to add them to your list.
In the meantime, I am going to write to Tim with an idea that might solve the problem without too much of his time.

Roy brought this thread to my attention and asked me to make it clear when a seller is setup to take PayPal and when they are not. With the approval of the Management Team I have made the following changes:
1. In the Auction List screen you now see the following icon when the seller is setup to take PayPal.
2. In the Auction Lot Details screen, where you place a bid, you will see the above icon attached to the bottom of the Seller's Terms and Conditions. It will note there whether the Seller requires a minimum invoice amount to use PayPal or not.
3. Similarly in the Approval Books, at the top of each page you will see whether the Seller is setup to accept PayPal or not. Also at the bottom of each page, in the notes, it will state whether or not the seller requires a minimum invoice amount to use PayPal.
I hope this helps clarify the PayPal issue.

Thanks Tim. I see on my listings at the bottom with the Paypal icon it states Invoice minimum is $1.00. I do not have that in my terms. I have Paypal minimum of $5.00 an invoice under $5.00 there is a handling charge.

AS the paypal button appears on ALL my invoices I assume that the paypal sign SHOULD appear on ALL my Auction listings.
The Paypal sign DOES appear on my Approval Book pages.
I would be obliged if this situation was rectifide toot sweet, at once, if not sooner, when you have time, at the appropriate juncture, in the fullness of time....

I have finally discovered why the paypal icon did not appear with my auction lots.
It was a fault within the Stamporama system.
If Tim or anybody else wants to know how and why please send a brown envelope stuffed with cash to my home address to reach me no later than 12 noon on the 32nd of December.

Not to keep everyone in suspense here is the solution:-
It had nothing to do with the "Set up Paypal" section.
I wondered why it was visible in the Approvals and not in the Auction.
The reason it occurred that way was because My members name is Brechinite, My Approval name is Brechinite BUT my Auction name
is.......(drum roll)........BrechiniteUK!!
( I stuck the UK on the end to let people know I was based in the UK )
So I have changed my Auction name to Brechinite and Hey Presto..The Paypal Icon now appears at ALL my Auction Lots.
Therefore if anybody else has a different Auction name to that of their "Members Name" I advise you to change it (If you accept Paypal that is.)

I have never been a fan of being permitted to have different user names in different areas of this site. That is something that was done way back before my time here.

I have had a look at what is Closing in 24 hours and the New Items listed to see how many sellers do not take paypal and it makes interesting reading.
Closing in 24 Hours:-
There are 14 Sellers whereby 1 sellers does not take Paypal and 1 Seller does not say they do or not! (the Unknown)
There are 152 items in total, with 17 items non paypal and 6 items unknown
Therefore Percentage of Non Paypal Sellers(inc Unknown) = 14%
Percentage of Non Paypal Items (inc Unknown) = 15%
In the New Items:-
There are 19 Sellers whereby 2 Sellers do not take Paypal, 1 Unknown and 1 who takes Paypal but does not have the Paypal Icon.
There are 783 Items in total, with 62 items non paypal, 4 items unknown and 316 items that takes paypal but has no paypal icon.
Therefore Percentage of Non Paypal Sellers (inc Unknown but excl non icon) = 16%
Percentage of Non Paypal Items (inc Unknown but excl non icon) = 8%
Conclusion:- There is still work to be done to encourage those that do take Paypal to "Set Up Paypal" on their membership otherwise it is still a complete guddle.

Just a question - If I see a person's item and it does not say "PayPal" next to the item does that mean they don't accept PayPal, or does it mean that they just don't use the PayPal icon on their invoices. If it is the second case I can still use PayPal, which is what I would probably try to do anyway using their E-mail as the identifier. There is a place on the invoice where payment method can be specified - some sellers do not specify payment method. This is where I default to PayPal and see what happens.

You want to make certain that the seller does not incur any Paypal costs for the transaction if you don't notify them what you are doing - 30 or 40 cents per transaction (can't remember) plus a percentage of sale / shipping cost. Also that there are no currency exchange charges.

If sellers who take Paypal do not click the "Set Up Paypal" item in the members area then they should be treated as NOT taking Paypal otherwise Tim's hard work of including the paypal icon has been a waste of time.
PLEASE Sellers if you DO take Paypal click on the "Set Up Paypal" button NOW.
Show some respect to other members and the hard work of the volunteers.

I'm the major seller who doesn't take Paypal. 1. I don't have a credit card and am not about to put my debit card # on the internet. 2. Actually, it's not Paypal itself that I can't stand, it dealers who take Paypal and have used abusive language to me because I didn't see
they took only Paypal. 3.I had at one about a 500- 100% feedback on Ebay, one guy gave me bad feedback because I didn't see his only Paypal notice. the irem was only $1.50. offered to send cash plus S&H and pay his Ebay fee. He declined and gave me bad feedback.
4. one other guy on Ebay had a lot that I won and really wanted but he refused to sell it to me because he said he only took Paypal. He didn't state anywhere, he only took Paypal. I filed a complaint with Ebay. They sided with the seller. 5. I used to buy quite a bit from Ebay but now they only take Paypal. that's why I'm pissed at Paypal.
