re: New to the club ... regarding my collection of US UNUSED singles fron before 1920 ...

My thanks to the welcoming committee.

Please allow me to make a bit of a brag about my collection. As of now,

it consists of EVERY US stamp, unused/mint, with a catalog value up

to $1000.

When I completed the collection of stamps from 1920-2000, I decided

to tackle those scary pre-1920 issues which required more expertise

than I had at that time.

I joined Ebay in 2010, and my pre-1920 collection now numbers over

460 stamps.

So, some of you may think,"Big deal. Easy for any one who has the

money!"

I'm 84, living on two small pensions and Social Security ... with a

disposable income of around $300 a month. I have never spent more

than $350 (C15) for a stamp.

At my age, I'm sorry to say that nothing gives me more pleasure that

filling those empty spaces in my album!

That's awesome. Welcome to Stamporama, and hope you enjoy this fine group of people who willingly help new members. I've only been a member for several months, but this group is wonderful and very helpful. Good luck with your stamps.

Carl,

Thanks for providing yet another example of how one can assemble a reasonably complete set of US postage stamps for a price that isn't unfathomable. I don't have your monthly budget, but mine is about half of yours, and I know that with time, research, and patience I will be able to make my collection more complete as well!

Welcome aboard!

Chris ... as I recall, you always were a rotten kid! LOL

Lars ... you nailed it. Time, patience, and lots of research is the key. I

created a spread sheet of all of the stamps issued before 1920 ... all 461

entries, ending at Scott #547. The columns were:

Scott #
Face Value ($105.21 total)
Catalog Value ($473,206)
Cat Val of the ones owned
Check off column for the count (367)

Here a tip that may be helpful. Using 1/4 of Cat Val, I then created a

notepad list of stamps with values under $250, $250-$500, $500-

$750,etc. I then concentrated my efforts on the lowest groups. It was

almost as satisfying completing a group as it was filling those empty

spaces in the albums!
