My grandfather had a very nice German collection, and I'm interested in picking up the right catalog to identify the various issues. He has occupation stamps from what looks like the US, Britain, and Soviet regions. The Scott Online 2015 German Catalog has most issues, but seems to be missing the Soviet Occupation Stamps. I'm thinking of the Michel Catalog, and will learn German if necessary to get good data on the stamps.

My history interest of WWII and Germany makes this a very interesting process.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

re: Which Catalog Contains All of Germany from 1847 to about 1969?

I believe you can now get the Michel German Specialized in an English translation. It is about the best catalog you can get for Germany. They split the catalog into several volumes, but it was a single volume catalog for a long time. If you only need the catalog for references for older stamps, you can save alot with an older single volume catalog.

Scott does list a number of the Soviet occupation issues. They appear after the German Democratic Republic, and have prefixes of 11N through 16N. Pre-DDR is listed in Scott as 10N just before the start of the DDR listing. Scott does not include local occupation issues, however.

Regarding the Michel catalog, you can often find older catalogs in junk boxes at dealer's. If you have a dealer near you, see if they have one for a few dollars or even for free. Michel has a 16 page translation guide for their catalogs. It is pretty good and helpful. It is a paper pamphlet the same size as the catalogs. I got mine several years ago for just a dollar brand new.

re: Which Catalog Contains All of Germany from 1847 to about 1969?

I thought the Michel Catalog was the way to go. I really like the online catalogs, and was thinking that an online Michel catalog might be the way to go. I'm not worried about the German Language being the hang up since there are so many translation programs in the wild and that I might be able to learn German enough to read it.

Since this is a long term project and I want to do more with Western Europe, it might be nice to get started with a good Michel Germany catalog.

Thanks Michael for the good information.

I'll see what I can do to locate this as well.

I checked, and Subway has the translation guide. It is still just $1.00.

As a collector of Germany, I strongly advise you NOT to get the English version of the Michel catalogue. It is two volumes but it does not cover all eras.

Personally speaking, as I collect all German eras, Colonies, Occupations, etc, I would advise you to purchase either the one volume Michel catalogue. I will contact you via message system with more information. I currently purchased the two volume German edition and for someone who specialises in varieties such as in the Germania sets, it is indispensable. If someone has no interest in the varieties then there's no need to get the 2 volume set. The one volume includes a lot all varieties regarding watermarks, etc. There are things in Michel that you will never find in Scott.

Michel now makes that guide available on its website as a pdf document.

Here's the link:

http://www.briefmarken.de/images/PDF/NEWS/Introduction_Englisch.pdf

I've found that it takes some practice to get reasonably proficient at using the catalogs, but often well worth it.

Since that guide can't cover everything, I've also found Google translate to be very helpful.

translate.google.com

I had also heard that the English translations were somewhat simplified, and so have always tried to work with the German-language editions.

re: Which Catalog Contains All of Germany from 1847 to about 1969?

I just purchased the e-book version of the Michel Specialized Germany Catalog Volume 1, and I really like it other than having to get my basic German down. It has a ton more information than the Scott Catalog. I'm happy to have added it to my library, and at ~US $50.00 seems somewhat cheaper than the paper version of the catalogs. I'm probably going to add volume 2 at some point before the e-books go off sale.

Thanks to Kelly and everyone who've helped me with learning philately especially those stamps and covers of foreign origin.
