Some of us are never bored..if nothing else is going on i always have stamps and covers nearby to sort. When my wife goes to Joanne Fabrics or Michaels she will sometimes bring a pack of three 13x14 x 3 plastic storage boxes and i fill them right up with stamps and covers. They actually work pretty good because i can store them 4 or 5 high on my desk . The only problem is the one i need at the time is usually on the bottom.

Had the same problem with my 7 Scott catalogs when I had to stack them!

Fortunately they are now vertical and in order on a shelf.

"Some might say "get a life""

This is the bane of the hobby, and I am puzzled as to when the expression, and the belittling tone in which it is usually said, came into the language. Certainly in the 1950s it was considered wise for a schoolchild to have a hobby, and stamp-collecting was high on the list of suitable examples.

I suggest that stamp-collectors are not thought to be out there consuming goods or luxury items, but instead holed up in their rooms on their own. Economically they are not contributing by buying the same stuff as the rest of the world; socially they are suspect because they are indoors and solitary.

'Get a life' has the unpleasant tinge of cultural fascism: do what we do, take an interest in what interests us, or we will point you out.

I say the people you meet on these boards (and I've only just joined) are very probably more interesting than these 'Get a life' or 'You need to get out more' jeerers! I do not want their life, thanks.

Interesting commentary, Guthrum. Google n-gram indicates that "Get a life" was first used in books in the mid-1960s (predictably) but didn't really take off until the late 1980s.

" ... Some might say "get a life" ..."
And some might find their nose bent double.
Admittedly I am not doing that much these day, but I have had a life, a hell of a life, at that. I suppose there are a few that have done the things that I have or better. But I don't think I'd trade my adventures for those of many others.
And the best part is I'm ashamed of almost nothing. I'd do it all again if I could.
