I think I have figured it out. After all the complaining that collectors have made about pen cancellations, Sharpie must have come out with an invisible ink.
Perhaps the apparent decrease in cancellations is related to the increased use of self-adhesive stamps. Since these stamps cannot be easily removed and reused, there might be less of a perceived need to cancel them. However, if true, this practice is still not justifiable, even if understandable. Forgoing cancellation is of course not official policy, and creates practical issues for item tracking, internal quality control, etc. of regular mail.
it really has to do with the inability of these packages to flow through the automated sorting and cancelling devices implemented by the various first world postal authorities.
someone who follows the implementation and abandonment of the sorting facilities and the machinery inside would be able to provide more insight. But postal authorities have become adept at automated cancelling of machinable letters, but are flumoxed by non-machinable material.
I have had a beef with Canada Post for some time now. I would prefer to get stamps just un-cancelled compared to pen cancels and felt markers. Twice we got an official form for our complaints, but, to no avail. This was about a year ago. I have quit buying their new stamps. If they don't have the common decency to cancel them properly, why should I waste my time, and money. This makes the stamps totally useless for collectors

I noticed the comment on Canadian cancels in another thread.
All of the letters we get are cancelled with the same system (the numbers change).
We usually get about 10/week with the same cancels
The M4L (postal code) on this one is probably a Toronto Ontario central post office
It seems to me to be a lot better than scribbling on the stamp.
Other post offices must have automated equipment for cancellations or maybe this is just a localized experiment or they just don't use the equipment?

Have you talked to your letter carrier. Some letter carriers know that you are a stamp collector will go out of there way to get your stamps cancelled.

Yes the M4L refers to the postal plant where the letter was cancelled. Nearly all mail mailed in Canada is sent to a postal plant for cancelling and shipment to smaller post offices for delivery. I think all postal plants have spray on cancels like you have shown, but uncancelled stamps when the letters go thru the canceller stuck to another piece of mail or if it is mixed in with meter or other mail that does not get cancelled such as admail.

What really burns me more than 'pen cancels' is receiving a letter from Australia where the sender has gone through the trouble to have the stamps cancelled very nicely and right over top is an ugly Canada Post Calgary Alberta cancellation. Who wants a beautiful Australian International Post stamp with an ugly Canada Post cancellation, not me? They find their way through my shredder very quickly.
I have contacted Canada Post and asked why. Their answer was they have to run the envelopes through the system to keep track of the number of items processed. When I asked why this only happens on items that are machine sort able they could not come up with an answer. In my opinion, they are doing this to keep their numbers of items processed up to justify their existence.
I have closed off my Canada collections and will not collect Canada from here on. Since I live in Canada I am forced to buy stamps in order to send items to various places but at least I no longer buy souvenir sheets and all the other items they have for sale.
That is my 2c worth.
Cheers

I know this may sound like nitpicking but can we please correct the title of this thread to "lose" not loose. Just finding it irritating.
I tend to buy my postage from one of the numerous web sites where it is discounted by 20-25%.

International covers with cancels from both the sending and receiving countries have added value. I wouldn't be upset with that.
Hi distemper and all
Where we live, we do not have a letter carrier. We live in a rural area and go in to town to pick up our mail. We do this because it is not uncommon for us to have items of value in the mail and we don't want to rely on the 'super boxes'. Our opinions of course.
On another note, my wife just told me minutes ago that she was told by a local post office employee that they have a sign up in the back where all the work is done stating that 'stamps are NOT to be pen cancelled'. All we can do is take their word for it.
I stopped buying all new Canadian stamps.

Hi again
I forgot to mention in my last posting that we are expecting a couple of important cheques. The post office promised us that it only takes 2 working days to receive one. We called today, since they are well over-due, and made a polite complaint by stated this. The reply was ,'oh no, we can't promise that'. So, to sum up, Canada Post also does not know what the other hand is doing.
Just thought I would throw this in

Thank you to whoever corrected the Subject line.

Received two more from the UK .The first one the lower stamp has a machine cancel all the top ones are uncancelled .It doesn't show up well as it is orange.
The second as you can see didn't make it past the person with the pen.

In the past two weeks I have received two registered and signed for lots from the UK . Neither has been cancelled.
You would have thought that as they had to affix a registration label they would have cancelled the stamps ???
This is just to me over, £12-00 of uncancelled stamps ,makes you wonder how much mail goes through the system without being cancelled.
