I wrote the recent thread on NY State Prexie precancels.
I also collect Texas State precancels; that I will write a thread upon, very soon.
I suggest organising them by state and then city, alphabetically.
Google the US Precancel Society for their website. There is lots of good information there for the novice collector.
Good luck!

As I've dug deeper into my ancient stamp hoard from my youth, I discovered a stock book album with a very nice precancel collection! I had no idea I had this!
I believe that bureau precancels are a well documented area, so it's easy to know where you stand per set completion. I saw there was a Steiner album for these. Locals are an "anything goes" area. I'm not sure if there is a record of every office that ever owned a precancel device, but any stamp could've been used. I remember going to local post offices in New Jersey and them letting me precancel stamps I brought along with me.
I'd like to learn more too. It's an interesting area, and lately I've been collecting them on cover.
Phil I have the same album but it's never been used, great reference
I make my own pages so bear that in mind: i organize my precancels by state and then by city in alphabetical order. For each city, i put the bureaus first (in order by the precancel society catalog) and then the locals (also in order by the catalog). Makes it easy to keep track and see where everything should fit.
Phil:
I collect both Bureaus and locals. I put the stamps in by city, Bureaus and then locals.

Here is the website for The Precancel Stamp Society David referenced above. Note that their annual convention is next week just outside of Boston (August 4-8, 2015: 94th Precancel Stamp Society Annual National Convention – Holiday Inn, Exit 28 on I-495, Boxborough, MA. Hosted by the New England Precancel Club.)

Bobby, the hotel wanted to know if I was coming OR not..... after a while, they just gave up, saying that they couldn't book a room that I was precancelling.
David, I know where you live...
re: organizing my US precancels by SMaier; I thought you'd have printed out the Bureau Album that you have access to by now.
That is how I started organizing ......
Just wondering if there are any articles or information available for a novice collector of US precancels.. I have stock pages of precancels that need to be organized. All suggestions appreciated.
