That's a great story! It's super when people remember you and go out of their way to do something nice for you. And I'm convinced it's Good Karma for good deeds you did for others with no expectations!
great story, David, and fabulous librarian to remember you and make the effort to ensure it got into the right hands.... and, yes, that IS an incredible bargain.
Nice story David: We have been able to access for our stamp club "ready to discard" older book sets from our Public Library, and make them available to our members at a very nominal $. The newer catalog, which we now buy every 3 years (as they really put a dent in our budget) are usually signed out continuously to our members and hard to keep for more than a few weeks at a time.
It is nice to have your own copy, even an older one. Most of us pay little attention to Cat value (except as a general guideline), and many of us have put a cutoff in the collection of newer stamps, of which there are just too many!
Collectors should not be bearing the responsibility of filling the post office deficits, or funding foreign government budgets.
Question: When is an older catalog too old to keep? I have several older 2007-2008 books to give away, which I hate to throw out, or carve material off from. Eventually I will, but when? Probably not worth the mail or UPS shipping cost, but just the same, you can PM me if interested.
rrr...
I guess somewhere between us is the norm...i know people that will spend thousands for a n item to complete an exhibit. For myself...i like the Chinese buffet method !
Great story! I always ask during the fall and winter months at local libraries if he have older catalogs leaving circulation. We even have a wait list at some librries, but I have benefitted many times. Enjoy!
Every so often, when the stars align, when the world is right (when is that?) and when you least expect it- you get a deal. The Scott Catalogs being so costly I've been borrowing from my County Library- they have 2012, 2013 and 2014. I've been able to borrow about any volume I've needed at any one time in one of those years. The only problem is- I'm about 30 minutes and 23 miles from the library location. The librarians all know me since I borrow these "heavy books". Thursday morning I got a call from one of the librarians- they were "discarding" the 2012 set to make room for the 2015 set and wanted to know if I was interested in purchasing the former set. I remember reading on a thread right here on stamporama that you can safely use a set for about 5 yrs. before it becomes obsolete. I asked him what he wanted for them and he said $5.00. I went directly over there, gave him $20.00 and thanked him profusely- the gas and time I will save over the next 2 years will amount to many times that $20.00 investment. He even threw in 3 volumes from 2010 he found in the backroom. So.....sometimes you get a deal!!
