Stamporama "Clothesline Exhibit" Competition #1

My local club (http://www.kingstonstampclub.ca) is having a "Clothesline Exhibit" night on Monday. For those not familiar with the concept, allow me to explain. It is a friendly competition consisting of one-page exhibits strung along a clothesline with clothespins -- very informal, and a lot of fun.

Since my own vision of Stamporama is to emulate, in a digital form, the activities of a "real-world" stamp club in as many ways as possible, I thought it would be fun to sponsor such a competion right here. (BTW, I have posted this in the "worldwide" category because I think it belongs here, as it is not a "Game or Contest", even though it is a competition.)

Rules are very simple.

1) Entrants post a ONE PAGE exhibit in this thread.
2) Photos should be reduced to 800 pixels wide to allow for comfortable viewing (excessively wide photos will be reduced by me without asking -- don't make me do it!).
3) Explanatory text is allowed and encouraged, even if it is already on the page, as it gives search engines (both internal to SOR and external like Google) something to find.
4) Philatelic discussion of exhibits is welcome, but leave out the "Chat Room" stuff ("Hey Joe, I didn't know you had such nice stamps" --- use the Message System for such private messages.)
5) New entries may be posted for one week. I will post a message closing entries Saturday Feb. 13, around noon EST (1700 UTC).

Selection of the "Winner" and Prize
6) We are all winners by being able to see and share all the pages to come, but at the end of the voting period the "most popular" exhibit will be awarded a US$20 gift certificate (with free shipping) to be used on their choice of BuckaCover.com (http://www.buckacover.com) or Discount Stamp Shop (http://www.discountstampshop.com)
7) Voting for "Most Popular" will be through use of the "Like" button. Voters may cast a vote at any time, but it is recommended that you withhold your vote until all entries have been posted, otherwise you are just "splitting your vote", however there is no limit on the number of entries on which you may vote.
8) Voting will close at noon Feb. 20.
9) The exhibit with the most "likes" at that time will win the gift certificate. In the event of tie(s), I'll think something up!
10) New addition: One exhibit entry per person. If this is successful, you will have another chance later.
11) And then, hopefully, we'll do it again!

Please PM me if I have left anything out.

Roy

P.S. I had a couple of different enquiries about the acceptability of "digital pages", rather than scanned physical pages. My response was "I'm easy. If you can put it on the DB, and the people like it, it's fine, however be aware that the DB does not allow HTML encoding. To the people viewing (and voting), I say "Let's enjoy whatever is entered, and if you don't think it is an appropriate presentation, let your (lack of) voting decide the issue".

Oh well, someone has to go first. This is a page from the Holocaust Album, featuring that most amazing of men, Father Maximilian Kolbe.

Once again, apologies for the 'shadows' on the scan, but it is better than my first attempt.

I have attached the write-up below in case it is not legible on the image.

1. Germany 1973, SG1664, single issue, 25th May, commemoration
2. Poland 1982, SG2844, single issue,10th October, Sanctification
3. Poland 1994, SG3537, single issue, Birth Centenary
4. San Marino postcard, 28th August 1981, 40th Death Anniversary

Father Maximilian Kolbe, born Raymund Kolbe, 8 January 1894, in Zdunska Wola, Kingdom of Poland, became a Franciscan friar, taking the names Maximilian Maria, between 1911 and 1914. His early career in Rome saw him active in preaching, publishing and conversion. Returning to independent Poland in 1918 he founded a Franciscan monastery at Niepokalanów, near Warsaw, before emigrating to Japan in 1930.There he founded a monastery in Nagasaki (which survived the atomic bomb), returning in 1936. After the invasion of Poland in 1939, Niepokalanów became a shelter for Jewish and other refugees.

Kolbe was arrested by the Gestapo in February 1941, and transferred from prison to Auschwitz on 28 May. After an escape incident in July which required retribution, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of a condemned man, having heard him plead that he was a husband and father. His request was accepted and, together with nine others, he was condemned to a starvation cell. After three weeks, the only man remaining alive and conscious, he was murdered on 14 August by lethal injection. The man whose life he saved, Franciszek Gajowniczek, survived Auschwitz and lived to the age of 95. Maximilian Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonised 10 October 198

This is one of my favorite pieces picked up along the way. It appears to be hand colored on a very thin paper much like onion skin. I am not certain this fits the definition of an exhibit page and if it does not please let me know and I will delete it. If anyone knows the background on this please share it.

Re: the Japan item

"5 echte Japan-Marken" means "5 real Japanese stamps". So I believe that this was an early packet, or promotional album page sold by a German dealer. Probably 1890s or thereabouts. It's lovely -- and completely in keeping with the idea of a Clothesline Exhibit.

re: Stamporama "Clothesline Exhibit" Competition #1

I'd like to present an album page featuring two stamps from Canada's War Issue, showing the Ram Tank It's one of my early efforts to create my own pages, and the image of the tank, or rather its incarnation as an armoured personnel carrier, is the very first image I ever obtained on-line, before I even had a computer capable of displaying images, much less a printer capable of printing them. I went to a local computer store and asked one of the owners (it was operated by two brothers) if he would mind searching for an image for me. As I recall, it was the only one available at that time.

Image Not Found

The Ram tank proved to be less than capable of competing against German armour, and when Canadian armoured units went into battle on D-Day, they were driving Sherman tanks.

In downtown Vancouver there's a Ram tank in front of the Beatty Street Armoury, the home of The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught's Own), an armoured reconnaissance reserve regiment, the oldest military unit in Vancouver, and the most senior militia in the province. Here a photo of the tank that I took several years ago:

A couple of years ago I walked past the armoury again and was saddened to see that the tank had been defaced by graffiti.

Beautiful exhibits, one and all!

I finished this up this morning. It's my first attempt at creating my own pages. I used PowerPoint, which was also a first. My goal was to create an attractive page, but keep it modest, don't over crowd it and let the stamps be the main focus.

I'll be typing up and printing a full history of King Peter I to accompany this front page.

re: Stamporama "Clothesline Exhibit" Competition #1

This competition is now closed!

A total of 9 entries.

All viewers, please register your choice of favourite exhibit by using the "Like" button. The system will only allow you to vote on an exhibition once, but you may vote on as many as you care to, but remember, this simply dilutes your vote.

Voting will be open for one week, until noon EST February 20.

I have decided what I will do in the event of a tie. I will ask for a second, short round of voting to break the tie. Since you can't vote on the same exhibit twice, the tie breaker will be decided by the votes of the people who originally chose one of the exhibits that did not get enough votes to enter the tie, plus any viewers who did not originally vote. (Much like a political leadership rally).

Let's see what kind of pages our membership likes best!

Roy, this is a great contest! I wish my work schedule would have let me enter this one. Maybe next time.

The idea of a one-page collection is fascinating, and one that I have been pursuing off-and-on for many years. For those of us who are a bit ADD and can't stop finding new areas to collect, the one page is sometimes as far as we get!

BTW, I went to "like" my favorites, and found that I had already liked most of them earlier, as they were being uploaded. If others did the same, that will probably favor the early up-loaders slightly?

re: Stamporama "Clothesline Exhibit" Competition #1

This is one of my favorite pieces picked up along the way. It appears to be hand colored on a very thin paper much like onion skin. I am not certain this fits the definition of an exhibit page and if it does not please let me know and I will delete it. If anyone knows the background on this please share it.

Re: the Japan item

"5 echte Japan-Marken" means "5 real Japanese stamps". So I believe that this was an early packet, or promotional album page sold by a German dealer. Probably 1890s or thereabouts. It's lovely -- and completely in keeping with the idea of a Clothesline Exhibit.

Austria - 2008
UEFA Soccer Tournament
This stamp is made from the same urethane material of which the soccer ball used in the tournament was made.

Portugal - 2007
Cork Production
Portugal issued this stamp made from cork, to publicize that country’s position as the world’s major cork producer.

Gibraltar - 2002

This is a non-competitive display (obviously, I don't want to win my own gift certificate!). "Likes" will be appreciated, but won't be counted in the final results.

Letter dated April 8, 1932, from France, commiserating with the Lindbergh's on the loss of their baby by kidnapping. Mailed during the 10 weeks when the baby's fate was unknown.

re: Stamporama "Clothesline Exhibit" Competition #1

Last Call for Votes!

I will close voting tomorrow, Saturday Feb 20 at noon EST.

It looks like youpiao is running away with it with his "Stamps of Unusual Materials", but add your voice and feel free to vote for some of those behind in the race to show your support!
