I am sure there will be other opinions on the big show..here is mine..1) It was the first day and the place was very well attended (packed) . 2) Between the European dealers and the Asian buyers..it was clearly not the place for a yokel like me with 300 hundred dollars in his pocket to get into the game. I have been to 15 or 20 large New York CIty shows since 1987 ..but was just outclassed by this one..I will stick to the smaller shows where i belong.

Wow, Phil.

Were the dealers that had more moderately priced material just too packed? I hate feeling rushed when I'm checking out material. Were people having to elbow their way into chairs in front of tables?

Phil, how crowded were the exhibits? My main interest right now would be to see what the current trends in exhibit design are, so I can get started on my Franklin exhibit. I'm one who would stand in front of a frame and read all the text, so I wouldn't want to be three deep!

I am considering going on a weekday, but I am still up to my eyeballs at work and don't know if I can escape for a day.

I did go to the International show in Philadelphia in 1976.

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

I just got back to my hotel room from my first day at the show. I spent the first half of the day volunteering at the Literature Room for the APS/APRL. That was great, met people from all around the world: India, Malaysia, Tasmania, France, Italy, Paraguay and more!

Jay Bigalke and Tara Murray gave a couple of nice talks about contributing to The American Philatelist and how to research and document your writing for both the AP and the APRL quarterly.

The Javits center was not crowded - there was a steady stream of people but I had expected more. It sounds like Saturday and yesterday were busier. It was interesting to see, and this is based on limited observation, but it appeared the younger people and families at the show were Asian and Indian. Of course, this being NYC that means they could be from anywhere including here. There was a very good crowd at the Children's/New Collectors area.

I made a want list before I came and met most of the goals today. Some things were as mundane as SG catalogs (on sale!) and some Canadian Star Trek stamps for my son. I did get what I thought was a very good deal on Britain Scott 186 and 224 (trying to round out the affordable issues of the Four Kings.) Also got a really good deal on an unused Scott US C4 unused, which I do not normally collect unused, but I thought it was a beauty.

There is definitely a great deal of high end material at the show, which is to be expected. The dealers with the "red boxes" had most of the show-goers attention. I don't plan to attend any auctions.

There is also a good representation of stamp clubs and societies. I had to resist real hard not to get involved in US Perfins and Precancels, although it was very tempting. I kept telling myself, "You chose Machins, you fool!"

Tomorrow I plan to look at the exhibits since I spent most of my budget today. The surprise for me was the collection of Republican candidate covers from the 1800's, part of the collection of Karl Rove! I did not know he was a collector.

I'll be back at the Literature Room tomorrow at 2, so if there are any Stamporama people at the show stop in and say Hi!

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

My wife and I drove up to Secaucus, NJ from Philadelphia and planned to stay until Monday but left Sunday night because there was foul weather forecast for Monday. We took the bus into Manhattan each day for the show. It was a ten minuet ride and the Javits center was another ten minuet walk.

I spent about five hours at the bourse on Saturday. I spent my budget and then some. A dealer sent me scans of some material I was interested in so I stopped at his booth first and that was where I blew the budget. It wasn't crowded but there were plenty of people from all age groups. It was truly an international show with dealers and visitors from around the world. Quite a few different languages being spoken. I didn't bother with the auctions because there wasn't anything I was interested in, if I was I would have just used my auction agent to place the bids for me anyway. There was some rare items in the court of honor to see. When I got back to my hotel Saturday night I realized I left one of my purchases on a table when I was rearranging my my back pack. I was quite relived to find the stamps at the show's lost and found Sunday morning. Karma is a funny thing, I found someone's brief case that was left at a table and turned it over to lost and found on Sunday. There was no time for looking at exhibits Saturday so I put that off until Sunday.

I spent most of Sunday viewing the exhibits. I narrowed my list to mostly US material, no way to be able to look at 4200 frames. There were some outstanding exhibits. Some of my favorites were the exhibits on single issue US stamps especially the pages that showed cancels and uses. There was a nice five frame on "Britain's Marvelous Machins." There were some excellent postal history exhibits, the ones I found interesting were "Philadelphia-Great Britain Mails", "San Francisco Postal History 1849-1869",and a few on local posts and carriers. My two favorites were a one frame showing just stamps with New York Foreign mail cancels and an exhibit I first saw at Grand Rapids last August for StampShow, "Walt Disney's First Superstar; Mickey Mouse."

I wish I had more time and money to be able to spend a few more days because I would have liked to go to some meetings while I was there. I will post some of my treasures I found while there when I get some more time.

I think this show is going to be a success and the hobby is alive and well.

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

Second day follow up.

First regret: I did not plan a third day! My budget is busted but the camaraderie is priceless.

There was a great talk today by Henry Scheuer on the Kansas-Nebraska overprints. Unfortunately Gary Granzow had to cancel his talk on line engraved security printing, but his book on early Perkins-Bacon engraving was in the literature room and is fabulous. What a skill there is in engraving.

To that point I purchased several Slania stamps for my wife's collection, and completed my US airmails with C5 and C6 (except, of course, for the Zeppelins, but I may have a plan for that.)

I also picked up the last of the Four Kings items I was looking for that I could afford. A successful shopping trip, for sure.

Kudos to the show organization, and the work done by the APS. I added Sweden, Great Britain, Croatia, Poland, and Switzerland to the people I met today. What other event, other than the United Nations and the Olympics, brings together citizens, not diplomats or athletes, to such a wide geographic range of people?

I'm back on the train tomorrow heading for Chicago. I doubt I'll make anymore international shows scheduled, but making it to this one was a great trip!

A trip to New York CIty is ALWAYS an experience...neighborhoods can change quickly. David Giles and a few of us from the old STAMPOFFERS gang went to the Javits 5 years ago, except for the Javits the neighborhood has changed completely with all the new construction.

well, a bad start to my day at the show

printed my badge last night; checked the times, you know the ones RIGHT AT THE TOP, and show up at 8. built up a nice big sweat going the mile and a half.

the details are all there, and all correct, and I read it wrong. I looked that the registration hours, not show hours. Why would I want to know registration hours; i pre-registered. Why would you want to print registration hours on a badge for someone registered.

My fault, still, I can't tell if the smoke is the sweat evaporating or me fuming.

I was in a bad mood anyway, so it's likely got more to do with me than anything else.

Back at the office; i'll probably try again later today. Already amassed three miles, what's a couple more.

I purchased my Dutch Indies air race from Coverman..but i think of him mainly as foreign covers..but he does have U.S. covers..the guy i am thinking about is along covermans lines but had strictly U.S. I have purchased Dutch Indies photo postcards and covers from Coverman over the years and have found him very fair with his price..some of those guys were just plain nuts with their prices.

i went back..... and now back at work 6.5 miles excluding walking the aisles.....

spent time at coverman; found a few gems and built a nice US rates to Australia collection. then spent time at the Christmas Seal and Charity Stamp Society booth chatting with John Denune, who is one of the most knowledgeable seal guys EVER. met a few other guys, including Alan Mohls who took a Large Vermeil for his one frame on Lutheran Wheat Ridge sanatarium seals, which was brilliantly executed and wonderfully informative.

Besides very painful feet, a great day

I like the leather postcard! It has my beloved Ben stamp on it! And what's interesting is that most of the leather cards of this era had two cents postage on them due to the weight. Back then, self important postal clerks would even impose letter rate for cards that had glitter or a ribbon as part of the design!

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

I went to the show today, walking in as the doors opened at 10am.

I spent 2 hours at the exhibitions. I got lost in details of colonial Africa displays: Rhodesia Admirals were analyzed to the depths of plates. I went to see Cape of Good Hope and was not disappointed. Scads of information. I was floored by panes of woodblocks, some on cover. But I was stopped in my tracks by Madagascar (not Malagasy, Scott's). On display were British Consulars in all their crayon cancelled glory. These were followed by British Inland mail issues. The best however was multiple pages of the illusory Norwegian Missionaries!!! I always thought these to be figments of philatelic imaginations. I was stunned for minutes. This was followed by the French earlies including full 10 stamp sheets of most of the 1891 issue. These were backed by copious copies on cover. Soon after I left to still my heart at a few dealers.

After an hour of rambling I viewed the $1.375 million inverted Jenny; and spent some time examining the British Guiana rarest of stamps. Again, the dealers were a respite. After another hour or so I bought myself some Africa to Africa covers and left with a glow in my eyes just before 3 PM. It was time to eat the rarefied air was wearing off.

Evident at this point that I missed the show of the decade!

I've been hunkered down since the beginning of the year at a project at work that went "Live" last weekend. Still sorting through issues and totally exhausted. Will be on fixing issues all this weekend. Even if it was over, I am too exhausted to enjoy a three hour drive to NYC and attending a major event. Not much more to say.

Even the Holocaust Stamps Project (HSP) was represented at the show, courtesy of the Society of Israel Philatelists (SIP)!

The SIP published a special Spring 2016 edition of their journal, The Israel Philatelist, for distribution at the event, with their NY World Stamp show exhibit frame featured on the cover. The HSP exhibit materials were displayed as part of it.

Ok, heres what i saw...some dealers had small boxes of U.S. Covers on their tables for one and two dollars...there is at least one dealer in lower priced U.S. covers with large cardboard pull out drawers..i tried to identify him in the program but could not find the name..i doubt you are going to have time to dig through other Mixed boxes of U.S. and worldwide covers like i have to..cruise the aisles and good luck !

I'll be back at the show tomorrow. In the morning I'll be at the Bermuda Collector Society's annual meeting, and then in the afternoon I'll be at their session on Bermuda Postal History. In between I'll be shopping.

i went back..... and now back at work 6.5 miles excluding walking the aisles.....

spent time at coverman; found a few gems and built a nice US rates to Australia collection. then spent time at the Christmas Seal and Charity Stamp Society booth chatting with John Denune, who is one of the most knowledgeable seal guys EVER. met a few other guys, including Alan Mohls who took a Large Vermeil for his one frame on Lutheran Wheat Ridge sanatarium seals, which was brilliantly executed and wonderfully informative.

Nice overall stash from the show. That's the kind of stuff I would bring home with me.

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

The HSP exhibit materials were displayed as part of it.

re: What was i thinking ..World Stamp Show 2016 ?

i've been enthusiastically de-acquisitioning stamps from my collection, and am delighted to send them to HSP rather than merely recycle them. For the small cost of postage, it's been a great relief to know that these little guys are going to do someone some good.
