Very nice find, Phil!
"... i do look at a lot of covers ..."
I guess you can not "take the history out of the boy" ever since they taught me to read in the primary grades i was taking books home from the library...ancient Rome, Knights in armor and on and on. Stamps (and later covers) just seemed like a natural progression. When we moved upstate we had a stamp club of sorts going at school..more girls than boys but it seems more boys come back to the hobby later in life.
This cover was of dual interest to me...i collect covers and cards from the Chicago Century of Progress and also my birthday is January 1. I also liked the postmark with Manila P.I. At times it takes me a bit to notice all that a cover can provide, The U.S.S. Bittern was a Minesweeper.
