Where did they get the albums? Did they buy to allow members to get countries?
Angore, the short answer is one of our members is a dealer...i don't know who put the collections together but he must have got them cheap..there were a hundred or more of them...the original owner must have spent a small fortune on binders, pages etc. Our member lets the club auction them starting at 20 percent of catalog.which is what most of them go for...the club takes 10 percent comission from the sales. The dealer considers them low end stuff and is happy if we sell them.
Selling something at 20% that you purchased at 10% or less is at least 100% gross margin. It may be a bargain to the buyer but the dealer is doing fine. Despite the amount spent on binders and plastic sleeves by the original owner, I doubt those materials ever figured much into the sale value. Rarely does unless the materials are in high demand and good quality, such as Scott Intl albums.
I bought a nine volume country collection once for $300, which was less than 10% CV, probably about 5%. The albums and pages/sleeves (hallmark photo albums) at retail were worth at least $900 new and were mostly in good shape. But what value do they really have? I still have no idea what to do with them. Further, reselling the stamps for even 20% would be nice, but that would be a lot of effort and to get that value I'd have to sell individual stamps or sets.
I don't know what my point is, but I sometimes wonder whether that purchase was a bargain or a burden. Three bankers boxes stand in my office as a monument to my success in that deal, probably forever until my children sell it to some dealer for 5% CV.
Hungary for stamps, i have no doubt he bought those binder/collections dirt cheap..there are hinge marks where he removed items to sell to his customers. It may have even been an estate sale where someone just wanted the room cleared out. You have me thinking back to when i thought bulk was cheap..did i think i could swap/sell 100 of the same stamp ? Like yourself i have no intention of selling in my lifetime. My wife and i are retired and playing with stamps fills in a lot of time which might otherwise have been boring.

How can I find said source? I am always looking for a new country or two!

Thank-you, Phil! You will be rewarded handsomely.

At present our club has a source of country albums with stamps at 20 percent of catalog. The binders are the good staples binders with fabric (about 14 dollars retail) the pages are Steiner with plastic sleeves. I look at the countries like India and Bolivia and i calculate what the original owner spent per page...where do you get modern used Bolivia ? The deals are great...but i can only have passion for so many countries !
