Great find Phil! Is it a first edition?
Ernie i do not see the words first edition...but also see nothing about other printings on this one...it says Copyright 1957 by Fadco Publishing Company.
The 1957 Fadco editions on Abe are shown as First editions. If there is no annotation as to "Second printing" or such it should be a first.
Amazon has them, $30.00 Hardcover, also 30 bucks used (4 copies)
I've done a lot of reading lately about battle rifles, but I hadn't come across any specific information about the M1903 Springfield. Can someone please let me know what topics are covered in The '03 Springfield?
The M1903 Springfield was issued to us Navy recruits in boot camp in Navy 1962-63. The rifles had been disabled, and we used them in calesthenics and to learn the manual of arms. It wasn't a Full Metal Jacket scenario — we didn't have to sleep with them!
Once I was given the task, with another recruit, of going to the base armoury to "disinter" Springfield rifles from the Cosmoline-soaked strips of cloth they'd been stored in. That was messy! — Cosmoline is the like vaseline on steroids.
Below, an image of a picture postcard in my collection, showing recruits marching with '03 Springfield at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. The photograph must have taken within just a very few years of when I was there. It's followed by a detail image of the sailor on the left at the front:
I've had this postcard for some time, but just now I took a look at the back:
The postcard was mailed by a Navy recruit to his parents; it's postmarked Oct. 21, 1962. The return address shows that he was in Recruit Company 563. Now that's a coincidence! The recruit who mailed the postcard was in training at the same time I was, and must have arrived in San Diego shortly after I arrived. I was in Recruit Company 558 from October 16, 1962 through January 26, 1963. The Oct. 21 postmark date is portentous: On that day, President Kennedy extended all military enlistments indefinitely because of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Bob
In early 1942 they were issued to Naval recruits; my dad, a top gunner on a Privateer, came back with his and an M1911 .45.
Bobstamps,
Amazon has the following hardback book for $65.69, but I am sure you can find it alot cheaper someplace else.
The Springfield 1903 Rifles (The Illustrated, Documented Story of the Design, Development, and Production of all the Models of Appendages, and Accessories) Hardcover – May 1, 1985
by William S. Brophy USAR (Author)

Try AbeBooks.com for a large selection of publishing dates and pricing ... also a great place to search for out of print philatelic books not available through philatelic channels.
Bob, the book covers about anything you might want to know about the 03 Springfield. In the Spanish American war the Spanish in Cuba had this miracle rifle called the Mauser and we were way behind the times without a weapon that could fire the higher powered smokeless powder cartridges without blowing up. The book goes through all the modifications 1901 to 1903, all the cartridges it handles including grenades and even how to modify it into a low cost sporting rifle that could kill anything on the North American continent...i was fortunate to find it at a yard sale !
Nice find, can't beat it for a buck!
A few have sold recently on eBay like this a few weeks ago.

Does yours have the dust jacket?
Don
Don thanks, mine has the dust jacket..small tears at top and bottom of it...so its not mint. There was also a booklet from the American Rifleman on remodeling the 03a3 Springfield into an economy or deluxe sporter..but thats pretty much covered in the book itself.I have lost the bloodlust..my guns gather dust in the gun cabinet upstairs..who knows my kids will most likely realize more for my guns than my stamps...my two luxeries in life now are my 2012 Frontier 4x4 and my stamps...if i had to chose between them i would give up the truck .
We went to a church rummage sale today and a woman was selling books...i asked her how much The 03 Springfield by Clark S. Campbell was...she said a dollar and i said sold ! i just checked the internet...Barnes and Noble has them from 199.00 new and used and the first one i saw on ebay was 165.00 ! Now if i could find stamp collections like that !
