Phil is absolutely correct - it DOES work.
I have been using toothpaste on headlight lenses for over 5 years now (auto mechanic) and it works just as good as the so-called professional lens polish.
Just be careful WHAT you use to apply it - the wrong cloth or padded applicator can permanently scratch the lenses.
Otherwise a great, cheap DIY fix!

You can also use insect repellent. You don't have to worry about scratching the lens, because there is no abrasive material in it like there is with toothpaste.
How to Clean Headlight Lenses with Insect Repellent: Get some bug spray that contains DEET. Spray the insect repellent on a dry paper towel or a cloth rag. Wipe the repellent on the lens until the lens becomes clear. It lasts about six months, but it's quick and easy to do and doesn't cost much.

Nope, and it makes a big difference when driving at night with clear lenses.
Its amazing what you learn when you get out in the world..we went to a driver safety course yesterday and the teacher said if you have filmy plastic headlamp covers you don't have to send away $19.95 a dollar tube of white toothpaste like Pepsodent works just as well. If you have not already tried it...it works !
