I frequently drive past a sign on route 9w with an arrow for a right hand turn saying John Burroughs Slabsides. My son is off for the week so we decided to check out slabsides and hike the area. I thought it would be closer to the highway and easier to find..but we found it. The siding is rough pine slabs alright..the place was locked but looking in the window i could see a rough table and desk. The terrain is useless for building or farming, large rocks and ravines..but i guess thats what Burroughs was looking for...what a hike it must have been for his friends Firestone,Ford and Bell to get there. We walked a couple of miles of trails and i am amazed at the work that was done making the flat stone trails and steps,it had to be muscle power and levers to work the heavy stones as there was no way to get machinery in there.Well i saw it and had a fairly strenuous workout.
