i was just in town to pick up milk and rolls at the covnvience store...the only open space was for the handicapped...so i parked 60 feet down the road. As i approached the store a mini mini suv pulls into the handicapped spot. a couple in their 20s hopped out and i had to say something.." i hope you have a handicapped sticker!" He blithely brushed it off with a stupid remark like its the only spot open or we will not be long. The airhead with him evidently thought it was fine also. We old fools still obey the rules of civility.

LOL!!!

Youth... so entitled! Were we ever that way?

I'm thankful every day I can walk that extra 60 feet!!!

That poor, "me-centered" behavior has a way of coming around and biting a person on the behind! Winking

But to answer your question.. they should have been B!+@# slapped. HOWEVER... there is a flip side to that coin. WAY too many people get the handicapped sticker that seem to be getting around well enough.

AND... Why is it now that grocery stores must have 5-6 electric scooters charged up and ready to go for any 50 something that just doesn't know how to lay off the Coca Cola and Ho Hos.

They should get up and walk! That's their problem.

re: Different rules for the young ?

One wonders why the country that champions individual initiative has yet to create a procedure by which people can easily supply the local constabulary with the evidence needed to charge minor violations.

(The general rule in US law is that a police officer can only issue a citation for behavior to which they are a witness.)

Would that we could do more!

There is a procedure for felonies
https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Citizen%27s-Arrest

I assume that this is reserved for the more serious felonies so that people do not start arresting their neighbor's kid for walking on their grass.

But for every bad story I think there may be a good story. Here is a video of a decent young fellow from the news this week.

re: Different rules for the young ?

I'm not sure the implication that youth somehow breaks the rules more is born out by any factual evidence. People of all ages break rules. The youth I have met by and large are pretty good and straighter than my generation ever was.

My viewpoint is there is a climate now whereby its acceptable to thumb ones nose at the rules and established mores when it serves a personal aim even if it means spreading lies and hatred, and this coming from the older generation more than the younger. Nuf said.

The most blatant offenders of the handicap/pregnant mom spots that I've seen tend to be men in their late 50s/early sixties in sports cars. They ooze entitlement.

There is. Any citizen can swear out a complaint on another as relates to a violation of the law. With the statement, the police will take it to the judge, and obtain an arrest warrant. If the police are at the scene of a misdemeanor crime, and witnesses are willing to make written statements, and a suspect is present, the police may arrest the suspect and have the witnesses come to the police station to give their statements, or take the statements at the scene, if appropriate.

"(The general rule in US law is that a police officer can only issue a citation for behavior to which they are a witness.)"

That is generally true as applies to misdemeanors and local code violations. With a felony, a police officer can make an arrest without a warrant if the officer reasonably believes from witnesses that a felony has, may or will be committed. For the "may or will be committed" the arrest with result in interrogation of the suspect prior to any formal incarceration.
