I'm not addicted, but I do end up going to some of the trivia nights run by local non-profit groups. I went to the first one reluctantly, but I established my credentials there, so I get asked to go to one pretty often.
What I scored on was a category called 'Tiny Countries.' I went 10 for 10 in that one, scoring with answers like San Marino, Andorra, Bhutan, Vanuatu, etc. Did have an almost heated argument with someone else at the table who insisted that Monaco fit the clue 'completely surrounded by Italy.'
As you might guess, the only reason I knew all those was from stamps. So collecting provides another benefit - recognition as a trivia expert.
" she was pooh poohed by the group"
Wow Phil you must be old to remember 15 cent beers. Best I go back is quarter drafts at the Old Heidelberg Inn on the Keansburg, NJ boardwalk. They had the best hotdogs with hot pepper relish! Yum!
We have tried the trivia nights locally but the MCs and staff don't police it well and it's always won by a group of youngsters hiding their smart phones under the table. There is no way a 22 year old kid could name Ringo Star's first wife! (Maureen Starkey Tigrett)
We complained and the bar staff just rolls their eyes and says it's all for fun!
Tom, being this is held in a brewery..it pretty adult behavior..after the answer tickets are picked up the cell phones come out to check ! Best deal i ever had on beer was the enlisted mens club in Frankfurt Germany..1961...we were six guys who met up returning from leave in the States and were staying over a day or so in Frankfurt on our way back to our assigned places...so anyway six of us go to the club and one of the healthy waitress came over and i said 6 beers...she comes back with 6 huge bottles of beer and says "sixty cents".
At Navy/Marine Corps enlisted men's clubs in Yokosuka, Japan and Camp Schwab Okinawa in the mid-1960s: beers for 10 cents, mixed drinks for a quarter, big hamburgers with fries for a quarter. Those Were the days!
I have no doubt that the Navy was dedicated to preserving democracy and creating alcoholics. A chief I worked for at the Navy hospital in Yokosuka always had lunch at the chiefs' club. He'd stagger back to the hospital about 1:30 or 2:00 p.m., beet red, and retire for a "nap". We wouldn't see him again until the next morning. I ran into him in San Diego a year and half later, while I was recovering from being wounded in Vietnam. He told me that his new house was almost finished, and that he was installing a beer keg in his kitchen. He was at the hospital that day to see a doctor about his cirrhosis!

My kids enjoy going to trivia night at Keegan Ales in Kingston,N.Y. My oldest son has been trying for a couple of years to get us to attend. I don't drink anymore..tap beer is not 15 cents a glass anymore..but thats no reason to be a stick in the mud. I just do not want to commit to every Tuesday night from 7 to 9:30 ..i have to admit its a mellow crowd, its friendly competition, its fun. Last night a special 10 point question was "the dictator of what country banned the film Christopher Robin ?" My wife said China but she was pooh poohed by the group and they said Turkey. Oh course mother was right but we did not get the points ! Any other trivia players here ? I do not want to get addicted.
