You might also like Henry David Thoreau, who, as you may know, was a close friend of Emerson's.
Are you mainly interested in his early life? I am always a bit fascinated by his later life and his trips with Ford, Edison and Firestone (The Vagabonds).
Webpaper, i have the book John Burroughs An American Naturalist by Edward J. Renehan. Its amazing how many famous people a kid from a hardscrabble farm came into contact with. He was a classmate of Jay Gould in a one room schoolhouse..amazing, then he meets Walt Whitman when they have minor government jobs in Washington. They had different opinions on the war but Burroughs never put on the blue suit. Ulster county lost a lot of men in the war. Then People like Henry Ford a fellow farm boy seek him out. Its an easy read for me..we always know where Burroughs is coming from...with Emerson he takes a lot of twists and turns..i guess his followers know where hes coming from.
As soon as i learned to read i started taking books home from the school library, history, adventure i loved it. Then i guess i was going on nine years old i discovered stamps. Over the years i put books on the back burner and worked on stamps. Lately my interest in local history had led to the works of local celebrity John Burroughs, naturalist and poet. His cabin slabsides is 17 miles from me on the West side of the Hudson. Reading Burroughs was easy for me and easy to relate to ..A Hudson valley native who grew up on a farm. Burroughs was a huge fan of Ralph Waldo Emerson so i purchased a book on Emerson, but i find him more difficult to read.I also have a book on Walt Whitman who Burroughs knew when they worked in clerical jobs In Washington D.C. during our Civil War. I am new at it but if anyone is interested in the folks i mentioned and want to email me, i would be happy to converse. phil
