Harvey, their was a fellow in our stamp club..he had a wife and young child and his means were strictly limited. Long story short...he drew his own pages..very artistic and he cared nothing for the backs of the stamps...so he put together some very attractive presentations. Do what works best for you.

I sort of feel like the bad guy here. I'm not suggesting everyone goes out and spends a shed load of money on stamps and everyone collects the same way. Of course we should all do things our own way. I am just curious how people deal with their pages and gaps, please don't shoot the messenger! There are many ways to collect and we are all different, and that's a very good thing! I am not an artistic person and collect a country to try to be as complete as possible. If you want to express your collection artistically that is totally valid and no better or worse than what I do. Just sayin'.

I make my own pages and usually make them as I acquire things. My USA album doesn't show any gaps, where as my 1930 to my end date of 1980 is complete, but my US classics are not but I know what's missing.

once you get past Allenstein and Assad-Hind, one is pretty much stuck with countries and entities one is unlikely to ever complete. If completeness must be attained, philately is an awful place in which to spend one's leisure time.

Harvey, It's important for some people to go for completion while others collect with different objectives. People who only collect a few countries are more likely to strive for completion but it is pretty nuts for a world collector to go for completion for many reasons, most of all time and expense. I decided along time ago that I was full blown nuts and that I wanted spaces for all stamps. Even though I have put my collection together on a limited budget after 30 of very serious collecting I'm glad I made the decision I did.
If you don't have spaces for all of the issued stamps issued you just don't have an honest picture of what has been issued. You also end up with sloppy pages having to add stamps to the margins because their are no spaces represented for them or having to make new pages to accommodate them, which often times makes for a poor presentation. I just try to get the best representative copy of any stamp I can, at a reasonable price.

Mr. RA! I feel the same way about completeness and spaces, I like to see spaces - something to aim for! Back in the 1970's when I was in university a prof I knew collected stamps - the whole world! Even in those days, before most countries went nuts, he had a room full of stamp books, including a few countries he said were complete. The only one of those I can remember is Czechoslovakia. He bought country albums for a lot of countries and also kept a Scott International world album in several volumes at that time. I was following a thread a couple days ago and it concerned a country where the stamps were not recognized philatelically because they were not issued for postal purposes. I'm amazed they don't do that for more countries. I was forced to do cut offs ( US 1976, Russia & Poland 1985, Canada 1988, World - first 3 vol of Scott's International ) to keep things sensible. I doubt if any of my areas will ever be complete. My Canada collection including provinces and basic BoB is missing 107 ( yes I'm a nerd who counts things ) and considering that #32 is $250 000 it will never be complete. Again, thanks for posting your collection on your site. Sometimes I just go in and see what certain areas look like. Everyone out the have a great week - the weather in NS is beautiful now after a very wet Spring.

If I worried about the gaps, I would probably get so depressed that I would stop collecting! I just know I will not be able to collect them all, so I focus on certain countries / periods / topics.
To me the very old, rare and expensive stamps are no longer "collectible" based on my interpretation of the word. To me collecting is for having fun. Some people collect to invest , like whoever now has the British Guyana 4c or whatever it was.
So if I should go with catalog values for some sort of reference; everything that is cataloged at $100 and below, that I can acquire for $10 or less with some good luck (at 10% catalog) is collectible. Then some of those stamps I still do not want to have.
The recent stamps of many countries are also getting close to being un-collectible either because of too many stamps printed/year ; poor subject matter ; too few needed for real postal needs, resulting in low print volumes etc, etc.

I don't worry about the gaps, I just prefer to see them and if by some luck I can afford to fill one then so much the better. I probably have a bit more money than some due to the fact I have a good pension, good investments and no family. But's that's the luck of the draw in life. I give to charity and when I'm gone everything left goes to charity. But I'm not an idiot in my stamp spending. If I see a good bargain I grab it - I love your auctions and approvals, prices are very fair and they're fun to go through. Have a great week!

I can't remember where I saw this, it might have been somewhere in SOR - not sure. A collector was discussing designing his own pages such that it omits stamps he/she can't afford. I can see the pros and cons of this, but I'm wondering how most people feel. For example there are many Canadian stamps ( #32 for example ) that I will never own but I prefer the gap so that my collection reflects the stamps that actually exist. I have stamps that I paid huge prices for that I probably should have not bought but every time I get one of these I feel a sense of accomplishment, for example when I finished the Canadian Victoria jubilee series ( the $4 was my last! ). I know most albums leave the very expensive stamps out but I prefer the ones that do not. Do we want to see only the stamps we have or do we want to see pictures of the stamps the country issued?
