I have seen Homer's paintings in the Smithsonian. It is now time for you to start a Winslow Homer topical collection, Phil. One day of enlightenment is all it takes. It happened to me with Iowa artist, Grant Wood, when all of his paintings came home to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for an art exhibit. After I saw all of his incredible works of art all in one place, I have collected Grant Wood topicals ever since. It is a small collection, yet something more to search for in this hobby.

Back when my older daughter was in elementary school, parents had to participate in the art program. My wife had the Winslow Homer painting "Breezing Up" to describe. I immediately told her that the painting had been on a stamp and provided a page with the stamp and first day cover on it to show the class.
I also had a partial sheet of the stamp, so I put enough for the class in little clear envelopes and my wife handed them out. She said the kids were very receptive to the program and the fact that the painting had been on a stamp. Who knows, we may have started a stamp collector from that class?!

I am a lifelong stamp collector...but as i age i have acquired a keen interest in local history. Today we went to the annual "stone house day" in Hurley N.Y. The stone house area of the town dating back to 1673 is quite pleasant to stroll with its homes and gardens and old cemetary. But theres always something to learn..at the small town museum they had a display of paintings by Homer Winslow. It seems he would visit Hurley summers shortly after the civil war and paint local counry scenes...children at play, the local red schoolhouse and country life in general. Before today the only thing i knew about Homer Winslow was that some of his paintings were on United States stamps like the 6 cent "Breezing UP" from 1962.
