Got in my 2007 Toyota Tacoma Saturday morning to go grocery shopping, 20 minutes later the oil light came on and 10 seconds later the engine seized up - $5000 to have a used engine installed. Truck too old, get rid of it but I still have a 2007 Toyota Yaris.... I haven't used the car for 2 months so the brakes were seized - at least $2000 for a major brake job! Car too old, get rid of it. I went from two vehicles to none in one day. Yesterday I had to get a friend to drive me out for groceries! Today I had to spend about 5 hours at the dealer to buy a 2019 Yaris, boring.... Well at least I'm still here - my wife's sister died on Saturday as well. If I ever have a worse weekend I probably won't be here to tell about it! Please, this is not a contest! I know things could always be worse, every day we wake up on the green side of the grass is a good day.

Nothing like your situation..but last week a friend of mine from the Y's 2011 Sonatas engine blew up...he had over 100,000 miles but the engine had a known flaw so he has a loaner and they are replacing the engine. I had a 96 Tacoma for 13 years...all of my friends with Toyota trucks were getting new frames compliments of Toyota...when i brought mine in they said it passed inspection , i asked how often did that happen..and they said "not often". Then right over the 15 year statute of limitations they told me my frame was rusted and would not pass inspection.I purchased a 2012 Nissan frontier. We were a toyota family from 1986 to 20019 but now its Subaru and Nissan Frontier.

re: Can anyone beat this bad weekend?

The car (Toyota Yaris ) had 240 000 Km, the truck (Tacoma ) had 195 000 Km. I really didn't think that was very much, the Tacoma I had before this Tacoma died after 499 000 Km, but at the time it was the only vehicle I used for about 12 years or so. These two that just died were alternated, which is not great - especially if I let one sit for a while. I always buy Toyotas - I learned to drive when I was 30 and I am 67 now. My first car was a Toyota Camry hatchback that lasted for about 400 000 Km. I know Trump wants everyone in the US to buy US, but I really do trust Toyotas - good thing I live in Canada. The quality seems to have decreased a bit, but I still trust them a bit more. But both dying on the same day was a bit of a nuisance!

Harvey i went from a 2009 Camry with nothing really wrong with it to a 2019 Subaru Legacy,my wife wanted all wheel drive and i have the 4 wheel drive truck. I think you will be amazed (i was) with all the new technology they crammed into the cars in the last 10 years. The Legacy is a pleasure to drive and the 271 horse power frontier just goes ZOOM at 16 miles per gallon.

A blown engine is a great way to learn how it works. One of my most interesting projects was rebuilding an engine. Before I started the most i knew was how to top up the oil and replace the spark plugs. As for nissans they are awesome even when they were Datsuns. I drove a B210 and then an old Datsun pickup til they faded into dust. Nowadays its a Pathfinder but it just doesn't have the cachet ... Mitsubishi Montero was another great drive ... Our neighbour (a mechanic) has a Tacoma and he thinks its the best thing since sliced bread ...

Toyota Camry's sold in North America are made here! The assembly plant is in Georgetown, Kentucky! It's hard to decipher what cars are American and foreign!

I know what you're saying, but I know a lot of people are very confused about what's made where. I know some people who, if you ask them about NA cars they only think Ford and Chevy. Some people are very slow to change.

Harvey, back around 1991 I was looking for a car. My credit union though they were cute advertising different rates for American and foreign cars. But the hadn't a clue.

So I asked about the rate for the Geo Tracker (Basically a Suzuki) and they said it went to the foreign rate.

Then I asked about a Dodge Caravan. They said the American rate.

So I challenged them... both cars were made in Canada!

It confused them. They gave me the American rate on my Geo Tracker. And wouldn't ya know, the make on a Geo title is Chevrolet!

re: Can anyone beat this bad weekend?

I completely get Tom's point. I've been shopping about for a new car. Settled on a Mazda CX-3 (made in Japan and/or Thailand). OK - makes sense. I was surprised to find out that the Buick Encore (a rebadged Opel, which I did know) is manufactured in South Korea. Not Germany, not Spain (where the Opel Mokka is made) but South Korea. Completely floored me.

If I were to buy Canadian, it'd be a RAV4 or Corolla, Civic or CR-V as much as a Grand Caravan or Impala. What IS a domestic car anymore?

The final assembly is one aspect but components (engines, etc) can come from all over the world too.

In 1973 i purchased a year old Dodge Colt(Mitsubishi) wagon for $1,900. What a wonderful car that was but after 3 years it was too small for the 3 kids in the back seat. I traded the Colt in for $1500 on a 1976 Dodge Aspen...big mistake, the Aspen started falling apart almost from day one. Lets just say that cars are better today !
