Was at a stamp and coin auction today.
The auction house had increased its buyer premium from 24% to 28.8%!!!!!
I did manage to buy a couple of lots. A very small collection of Portugal for £33 and a collection of Portuguese Colonies for £60.
There are quite a few duplicates which will eventually end up in the auctions and approvals once I've taken out what I need for my own collection.
I'm off to another auction on Monday, They hold a bring and buy sale so hopefully I'll sell enough there to pay for my fuel and to buy a fish supper on the way home!!

Had a great time at the auction on Monday night in Edinburgh.
It was also the end of the Annual Edinburgh Arts Festival. It always closes with a Fireworks display at Edinburgh Castle. Although we were some distance from it we had a great view from the car park of the auction venue.
There is a Bring and Buy sale at the auction and I sold a few lots but the cost of entry had gone up 100%!!! i.e. from 25 pence to fifty pence per lot. I made enough "profit" to pay for my fuel. Its a round trip of 160 miles!
I only bought one lot. 12 stockbooks of Eastern Europe. I should be able to fill my printed albums of Hungary and Czechoslovakia with plenty duplicates left over for the auctions or approvals here.
Of course its a long way to go for so little but the joy is meeting up with the guys and girls. We always put the country to rights, shoot the breeze and have a bloomin' good laugh!!
No more auctions until 9th October. Hope I don't get withdrawal symptoms!!

A few months ago, I sent in payment on one of my credit cards. I was paying off the small remaining balance. I thought I had a charge that had not yet appeared, so I sent in a little extra to cover that too.
I didn't have any outstanding charges, so the payment caused a "Credit" balance. Boy, they didn't like that one bit. I was told to not send in payment for more than the statement balance.
Now, on this same credit card, I did it again, just to spite them. I currently have another small credit balance. I haven't yet heard from the bank about it.

I keep at least three of my cards with a balance in my favour, never had any complaints yet. Means I have a better credit than they say. I hate sending in an odd payment so round it up all the time.

I usually pay the exact amount. Occasionally, I overpay by a bit due to bad math, when I try to add up a bunch of numbers in my head. I've never heard a peep from them when I had some extra cash in there! I usually pay online, so it is a click to add the balance to pay off. Done. Ack... I just checked. Too much! And with a trip coming up next week, double ack (in advance)!

Back when I decided that Sears was dead to me, I overpaid my last bill by a quarter. They didn't send statements if you had a zero balance, so I figured it would cost them to send me a statement every month... which they did for about two years. I was disappointed when they finally sent me a check for a quarter.

"I’ve lost 9 pounds in the past 18 days using a ketogenesis diet, fasting and exercise. I don’t eat flour or sugar or almost all other carbohydrates, and I don’t eat between 8pm and 11:30am the next morning. I cut alcohol to two drinks a week. It’s working for me so far. I have 15 pounds to go. The exercise is 30 minutes of intermittent hill climbing (simulated) on an elliptical machine, every other day, and two miles or walking, while commuting, every day for five days per week. I feel better than I have in 5 years. I am 54. "
Dialysis patients, beyond the joys of being stuck by needles and having a machine suck out all your blood; also get treated to constant oversight into everything that we put in our mouths. If I stray at all from a strict 30 fluid ounces and 1200 calories per day in conjunction with a ‘renal diet’ (no phosphorus or potassium containing foods), I pay for it dearly. Every dialysis session begin with and ends with your ‘dry’ weight, if you come in over your ‘dry weigh’ they assume it is fluid gain and suck it all right out of you. If you have ever been badly hung over you know how it feels to have a lot of fluid taken from you in dialysis. Imagine feeling like this day in and day out with no hope of it changing until the day you die. A nutritionist constantly monitors our weekly metabolic blood panels so there is no ‘cheating’, they know instantly if anyone ‘cheats’ on their renal diet.
Many dialysis patients really resent the loss of dietary autonomy and come in at 5 kilograms (11 pounds) or more over their dry weight and are belittled each week by the nutritionist for their high phosphorus or potassium levels. After having 10+ pounds in fluid removed from them after a dialysis session they basically spent the next 24 hours in bed trying to recover only to walk back to into dialysis and start the cycle all over again.
So I have learned to give up eating and drinking ‘for enjoyment’ and for the over the last 5 years I have walked into dialysis every day at exactly my dry weight (95.5 kilograms). Not 96.5, not 97.2, not 95.6, but exactly 95.5. I found it was a matter of self-discipline combined with a significant negative reinforcement (feeling like hell after dialysis). I also placed a black glass scale next the refrigerator and step on it anytime I want something to eat or drink. Knowing the price to be paid if I am over 95.5, I only eat or drink enough to reach that number. My weight awareness borders on bizarre, you can ask me any time 24/7 and I can tell you exactly how much I weigh but doing it this way allows me to function as close to a ‘normal’ life as I can.
I have learned that my weight is totally about what I put into my mouth, nothing else matters. There is no way on earth that I could sweat off 10 pounds every day short of becoming a marathon runner; there are great health reasons to exercise but weigh loss is not one of them in my situation.
I lived the first 55 years of my life eating and drinking as I liked, I totally took this for granted; now I cherish every bite of food or sip of tea. I had to have an epiphany and decided to give up drinking/eating for enjoyment and moving to drinking/eating only to stay alive.

When we were in elementary school..my mother put my sister and myself on the Beeline at Chatham, N.Y. It went to North Adams and my Aunt drove down from Readsboro Vt. to pick us up. Many fond memories of early 1950s small town America in Readsboro..the 4 of July was something else with the huge bonfire,fireworks and pie eating contests.

The "Beeliners" were rail diesel cars see RDC operated by the New York Central Railroad.
Originally, RDCs had plain stainless steel ends. However, in the 1950s, a fatal wreck occurred at Palmer, Massachusetts, that involved an RDC striking a car. This caused the federal government to require that both ends of RDCs be painted in bright colors to make them more visible. The New York Central painted their RDCs in black and yellow stripes, thus their nickname "Beeliners".

Picked up our new Marine on Friday. What a change to this young man. I love him so much. He'll be home for 10 days then off to Camp Geiger. He is hoping to be picked up by a MEU. He would be connected to Navy ship and could go anywhere in the world. Go Ernie Jr.!

Hey Phil. The badge is his marksmanship rating. He scored expert and gets to wear the crossed rifles. They had portraits in his squad bay of all of the marines and officers in his chain of command. Many did not score expert so the crossed rifles are kind of a big deal. The ribbon is for "Civil Defense" (I think) but all marines are entitled to that ribbon.

The other night I saw some politician in a debate say he was going to pay out a ‘freedom dividend’ to some American families. Huh?
I think that we already have freedom dividends. Freedom dividends that were paid for in the past by everyone who served and gave us our freedoms. Freedom dividends that are currently being paid by folks like your son who serving now.
A huge thank you to all who have previously served, those who are currently serving and to their all of their families. We all should appreciate the true freedom dividends that those who have served have gifted to us.

Wow ! when i was 18 we got our draft cards..because we had to but mainly to avoid hassles when we ordered a beer. It was common at the time to enlist in your own prefered branch of service rather than have the draft hover over you. Skip ahead 10 years and my kids were born at the height of the Viet Nam mess..my sons grew up listening to Bob Dylan and the Beatles and had no interest in military discipline..they did not get into fights, they were a long way from the ruffians i grew up with.

56 years ago today I enlisted in the US Army. I lucked out and didn't get shipped to Vietnam. Serving in North Carolina and Alabama was liking being in a foreign country for a kid from North Dakota.

Off to Bob Murray's stamp auction tomorrow in Edinburgh. The weather is to be windy and raining. Great weather for driving the round trip of 160 miles!!
I'll leave home at noon and get home at midnight or thereabouts.
There are a few nice lots to be had. Hopefully I'll be lucky.

At the August auction there were three lots:-
a) 1851-2000 with a few later in two stockbooks with sets, part sets, odds and blocks Also United Nations mint & used with much in sets.....Estimate £50.....(sold for £45)
b) 1972 - 1989 year packs duplicated to four of each (35) also six other packs/books. Mint stamps face value c $190................Estimate £35........(sold for £32 )
c) 1990's to 2006. 86 different U.M. sheetlets Face value $570. Stc £2,136....Est £120....sold £150.
There is sometimes some good USA included in worldwide collections but it may not be worthwhile buying the whole collection for a few USA stamps.
The bulk of what we see is the much duplicated common stamps in stockbooks.

Our one and only local stamp shop is open for a few hours on Tuesdays only. I visited the shop today. A guy came in with an inventory list of used blocks of four US stamps from the 1940s through 1960s. He inherited the stamps from his uncle. He wanted to sell them, and commented on their scarcity, because the stamps were "old". The dealer was very nice, informing him on the lack of value for those items. The guy left, probably not very happy, but those were the facts of life.

My friend Mike went to a clinic and paid $200 to get assessed - then was prescribed a personalized keto diet and lost 12 lbs.
I heard it was controversial - that high-fat could lead to heart and stroke issues - and that a plant-based diet was more healthy. But being smarter than Mike, I skipped the $200 clinic fee and just started the keto diet based on a photocopy of his program.
Then, two weeks later, a friend told me Mike had died suddenly. I panicked and went to the clinic and my family doctor. It cost me $500 but they assured me it was extremely low-risk in my case.
I called Mike's mom to find out how this miracle diet had gone so wrong. She said, "well he stepped off the curb and that's when the bus hit him..."
Can any lawyers out there advise if I can sue his estate to get my $500 back?

Do the US Marines still use the phrase, "the proud, the few..."? Even as a Canadian I always found that to be an inspirational (and aspirational) quote. And I would be happy to be in your shoes. Good work, dad!
My best friends brother-in-law, and fellow Steelers-Buddy (apologies to your Jags) fought in Vietnam and I was told he was a "full-bird" colonel. He passed away two years ago and I never asked, but what does "full-bird" mean"? Is there a half-bird colonel?
BTW, at our last game together in Cincinnati about 5 years ago, a couple jackasses grabbed his "terrible towel" as we were leaving the stadium. He wheeled around and said (not yelled - just said, but very assertively) "you hand that back, and you do it now sir". I swear that a few dozen people around us just stopped cold and held our breath. Here was a geezer, but ramrod straight staring down a couple drunk teens. Then one of the kids picked up the towel and said "sorry sir". All Mike said was "that's ok, good game today".
The proud, the few? Oorah!

Thanks for the positive thoughts regarding my son. Yeah, they still use that slogan haha. America has had a longstanding love affair with their United States Marines Corps. I will get in my car at 3:00 AM and make the 7 hour drive to Camp Lejeune to spend some time with him.

Winter hit us in Colorado Thursday and Friday as well. Snow and cold. Temperatures dropped to single digits Farenheit or around -13C. Many slick roads and accidents. However, it cleared out Friday night. At 3:30 PM mountain time Saturday, it's back to autumn with temps back in the 70s Farenheit. 65 degree temperature change is killing my sinuses!

After the front moved through Colorado, it dipped south into Texas. Temperatures here dropped 40 degrees F overnight. Still mid 50s to mide 60s for today was a nice break from the upper 90s we've been having. We'll go back up to the 90s later this week, and then down the temperatures go again. That's October in Texas! You can send us rain, if you please. We really need it.

I think we got away very lightly, Winnipeg and Portage got it worse, they even had broken main transmission line pylons at Portage. Broke the historical local precipitation record for the day by 20cm.

@ernieinjax — Please congratulate your son on my behalf. I served as a Navy hospital corpsman with the Fleet Marine Force in Vietnam in 1966. Marines, having helped save my life in Vietnam, are in the top tier of humanity in my book. I wish your son the best in his career in the Marine Corps.

Hey Bob! Thank you so very much for the kind words. That means alot to me. I actually just drove up to see him this past weekend. Hes at Camp Geiger in North Carolina. He got 8 hours of liberty Saturday and Sunday. I couldnt keep him overnight but we had a really nice time and I got a chance to meet some of his buddies. It was really nice up there with highs in the 70s. I took my pup Charlie up there and we found some nice spots to enjoy being outside. Thanks again Bob. Hope you're having a nice fall season. -Ernie

We are back to the mid-90s today, and will drop to the 60s late tonight for tomorrow.
We have been getting some rain. That is good! It is coming as often we do in the summer from the tropical disturbance in the Pacific Ocean near the Baja Peninsula. People think we get battered by the storms in the gulf. That is usually the case along the gulf coast. In central Texas, we normally get little to no rain from gulf storms.

The outsider to get through to a semi final is Japan they have a good chance of beating South Africa if they continue to improve the way they have been.
England and New Zealand are through they both won their games.

The cowards in Parliament didn't vote on the Brexit dealtoday because of a stupid motion to avoid accidently leaving without a deal.
Boy will the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats pay for that at the next election.
Its just been announced that the Government will put a Bill up to Parliament on Monday. It will take a few days to go through both Houses if it is successful.

Ian, not sure the bunch of them are worth voting for. I'm sure that if all the facts now known, regarding the terms of the deal/backstop etc, had been put before the public at the original referendum the result would have been different.
I'm still at a loss as to why the NI situation was seemingly not at the forefront of debate until the terms of the deal were known.
Well done to England in the Rugby, sad for Ireland but hopes for Wales tomorrow.

Ireland has been a problem ever since the Vikings arrived and always will be.
I would have been quite happy to leave with or without any kind of deal.
During the last year none of the popular media have highlighted what the EU is planning for the future.
Little mention of the European Army, Uniting the Central Banks, All Taxes raised by each country to be paid to the EU who will then re-distribute the money whichever way they think fit. etc etc etc.
Even last night the main BBC News bulletin never even reported what was in the European Councils Communique. Censorship??
When you speak to the general population at large all they do is repeat like parrots what their political party leader has spouted or the sound bites brought forth by the media. They have no knowledge of how the EU came about and how it has progressed to this point or that the main aim is still for the EU to become a Socialist United States of Europe.
Remember it all started by half a dozen guys in Switzerland during the latter part of WWII. It started with cooperation over Coal, Iron and Steel, it proceeded to become the EEC with six members, then 13 member states, then the Common Market, now the European Union. There was the treaty of Rome, the Maastrict Treaty and the Lisbon Treaty. During the Maastrict Treaty the Irish voted NO to it, had a second referendum on it and said YES. We the British never even got a vote on it as John Major got Parliament to sign up to it without us getting a chance to vote on it.
Sir Winston Churhill said it was a good idea for Europe BUT NOT for the United Kingdom.
Time for drinkie-poos now that we are splashing about in a lake of Single Malt Whisky thanks to The Donald

Alcohol prices vary widely by each state depending on how much they are taxed. It is the same for cigarettes. In some states like NC, a centralized government body (often called ABC for Alcohol Beverage Control) sells distilled spirits (like Scotch) while local grocery stores sell beer and wine. There are still a couple of NC countries that do not allow sales.
I doubt the tax increase will impact sales that much.

The United States have put a 25% IMPORT Tariff on all Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
ie if a bottle of single malt is valued at $10 an extra $2.50 goes to the US Government therefore it will cost the importer $12.50 rather than $10. The extra $2.50 will be passed onto the importers customers ie YOU
All because of the European Unions state aid to Airbus.
The irony is that if the UK had already left the EU the US would not have put on the 25% Tariff!!

You don't have to spill tequila on anything to get the paint off. Just open a bottle and let it sit there next to it...Well I guess that wouldn't work after all, because if the bottle is open you just have to drink the cactus juice inside!

The steam would come out your ears, you couldn't breathe and you needed someone to slap you hard on the back so you could draw breath. It would take five minutes for your eyes to re-focus and ten minutes for your brain to say "that was fantastic, hit me with another shot of that stuff!!!!"

Legend has it that Hudson Bay concocted the 151 overproof because navy strength would freeze above the artic circle. 151 has made a comeback in recent years and there are a lot 151 demerara overproof's to be had.

Not my favorite either. Scotch without peat isn't worth the time. Lagavulin, Laphroigh and for those on a thinner budget there's some single malt stuff called McClelland
or something akin that can be had locally for $24. When i was youth with peculiar tastes for my time all those peats were White Horse distilleries and very cheap. Jack daniels bought up a lot of them and ever since then the price got jacked up. I have a fond memory of sitting in a bar in van with a yank who according to his tale had sold a bunch of aircraft simulators - we disposed of two bottles of islay malt at bar price so he always sits high in my recall8

Vinman had posted asking for support for The Chester County Historical Society's bid to win support from National Geographics competition for restoration funds.
I'm pleased to report that they were successful and won the entire $150,000 for the new roof and chimney project! Yea!

I migrated from win 7 to win 10. I have seen one issue so far (docking station audio not working) but nothing else so, Of course, Microsoft changed all the default apps to their apps (Edge, etc). It was listed as activated so confirms Microsoft is still allowing free upgrades to prior registered versions.

Last Sunday at the flea market was one of the weirdest days ever there. For example, a guy came into my booth and demanded a refund for an item that he bought that didn't work. I tried to explain to him that I was not going to give him a refund. He was upset and kept interrupting me, which prevented me from finishing what I was trying to say. He continued that he was frustrated over his purchase and wanted a refund. I told him again that I could not give him a refund. He started up again. This time I interrupted him and said that it was simple. I was not going to give him a refund, because he did not buy the item from me. Geepers!

Don't you just love some members of the public.
I have had similar.
A couple came in to a shop I was working in. She came out with a tirade that she wanted a new item to replace a broken one. She produced the receipt and delivery note and when I could eventually get a word in I produced a brochure that showed that her item was 6 years old and well outwith the guarantee and her invoice was for something different. I said I would repair the item but it would cost. The husband agreed and as they left I heard him say to her "See you and your big mouth".

I know I am fortunate to have two auction houses within a 30 mile radius and a genuine stamp auction with 400 to 500 lots every couple of months in an 80 mile radius.
I once went to an auction to view the stamps. "She who must be obeyed" came along. She noticed a chair that she wanted for a large teddy bear she has, to sit on.
On the day of the auction I went to the stamps and she went to a different room where the chair was being sold.
When we met later I asked her if she got the chair. She didn't buy it as the price was too high. However she had bought a 17th century 5 foot Oak Chest AND a Welsh Dresser !!
The teddy bear still hasn't a chair to sit on!!!

I have a week of respite from that chore yet. (Ours are in the cellar) My good lady always puts up two trees, one silver or gold with only glass ornaments and mementos and white lights, the other with coloured lights and decorations.
These and the outside house lights will not get turned on until about the 16th.
As a child it was always the 18th. which was my parents wedding anniversary, as we children got older we were entrusted to put up the tree and decorations while they went out for the evening. That was the days of paper garlands across the room and I still think they look much nicer than the glittery foil ones that are sold now.

Wednesday was a crazy day at our house. My wife woke me up to say there was a raccoon acting strange in our backyard. She said he was up on the deck and just stared at her when she knocked on the window.
We watched this guy stumble around the yard, taking the same path over and over. He must've been up on the deck a couple of times. He wasn't right. I called the town and they sent over two police officers. They told me that there had been several reports of this raccoon in the past few days, and he disappeared before the animal control officer could show up.
This time they kept an eye on him and eventually were able to just walk up to him and drop a garbage can over him. We put a few patio blocks on top of it and waited. The animal control officer showed up and took him away.
The verdict was that he wasn't displaying signs of rabies, but possibly had distemper. He did have to go since it's highly contagious.
I had a neighbor call me while this was happening, asking why there were two police cars in front of my house. In the end I sent a message out via our neighborhood email chain letting everyone know that the odd raccoon had been removed.

Years ago in one of my other lives, the animal control officer for our city called for help with a wild animal. I got the call, and went. It was a skunk. It was running back and forth in front of someone's house. The animal control officer thought it had distemper, and asked me to get close enough up to it so that I wouldn't shoot it in the head. They need the brains to test for distemper and rabies. I told him he was nuts, and I wasn't going to get up to the skunk and get the skunk juice all over me. I stood on the curb, and shot it through the heat. I left to let the animal control officer pick it up. It did test positive for distemper.

Was at a stamp and coin auction today.
The auction house had increased its buyer premium from 24% to 28.8%!!!!!
I did manage to buy a couple of lots. A very small collection of Portugal for £33 and a collection of Portuguese Colonies for £60.
There are quite a few duplicates which will eventually end up in the auctions and approvals once I've taken out what I need for my own collection.
I'm off to another auction on Monday, They hold a bring and buy sale so hopefully I'll sell enough there to pay for my fuel and to buy a fish supper on the way home!!

Had a great time at the auction on Monday night in Edinburgh.
It was also the end of the Annual Edinburgh Arts Festival. It always closes with a Fireworks display at Edinburgh Castle. Although we were some distance from it we had a great view from the car park of the auction venue.
There is a Bring and Buy sale at the auction and I sold a few lots but the cost of entry had gone up 100%!!! i.e. from 25 pence to fifty pence per lot. I made enough "profit" to pay for my fuel. Its a round trip of 160 miles!
I only bought one lot. 12 stockbooks of Eastern Europe. I should be able to fill my printed albums of Hungary and Czechoslovakia with plenty duplicates left over for the auctions or approvals here.
Of course its a long way to go for so little but the joy is meeting up with the guys and girls. We always put the country to rights, shoot the breeze and have a bloomin' good laugh!!
No more auctions until 9th October. Hope I don't get withdrawal symptoms!!

A few months ago, I sent in payment on one of my credit cards. I was paying off the small remaining balance. I thought I had a charge that had not yet appeared, so I sent in a little extra to cover that too.
I didn't have any outstanding charges, so the payment caused a "Credit" balance. Boy, they didn't like that one bit. I was told to not send in payment for more than the statement balance.
Now, on this same credit card, I did it again, just to spite them. I currently have another small credit balance. I haven't yet heard from the bank about it.

I usually pay the exact amount. Occasionally, I overpay by a bit due to bad math, when I try to add up a bunch of numbers in my head. I've never heard a peep from them when I had some extra cash in there! I usually pay online, so it is a click to add the balance to pay off. Done. Ack... I just checked. Too much! And with a trip coming up next week, double ack (in advance)!

Back when I decided that Sears was dead to me, I overpaid my last bill by a quarter. They didn't send statements if you had a zero balance, so I figured it would cost them to send me a statement every month... which they did for about two years. I was disappointed when they finally sent me a check for a quarter.

"I’ve lost 9 pounds in the past 18 days using a ketogenesis diet, fasting and exercise. I don’t eat flour or sugar or almost all other carbohydrates, and I don’t eat between 8pm and 11:30am the next morning. I cut alcohol to two drinks a week. It’s working for me so far. I have 15 pounds to go. The exercise is 30 minutes of intermittent hill climbing (simulated) on an elliptical machine, every other day, and two miles or walking, while commuting, every day for five days per week. I feel better than I have in 5 years. I am 54. "
Dialysis patients, beyond the joys of being stuck by needles and having a machine suck out all your blood; also get treated to constant oversight into everything that we put in our mouths. If I stray at all from a strict 30 fluid ounces and 1200 calories per day in conjunction with a ‘renal diet’ (no phosphorus or potassium containing foods), I pay for it dearly. Every dialysis session begin with and ends with your ‘dry’ weight, if you come in over your ‘dry weigh’ they assume it is fluid gain and suck it all right out of you. If you have ever been badly hung over you know how it feels to have a lot of fluid taken from you in dialysis. Imagine feeling like this day in and day out with no hope of it changing until the day you die. A nutritionist constantly monitors our weekly metabolic blood panels so there is no ‘cheating’, they know instantly if anyone ‘cheats’ on their renal diet.
Many dialysis patients really resent the loss of dietary autonomy and come in at 5 kilograms (11 pounds) or more over their dry weight and are belittled each week by the nutritionist for their high phosphorus or potassium levels. After having 10+ pounds in fluid removed from them after a dialysis session they basically spent the next 24 hours in bed trying to recover only to walk back to into dialysis and start the cycle all over again.
So I have learned to give up eating and drinking ‘for enjoyment’ and for the over the last 5 years I have walked into dialysis every day at exactly my dry weight (95.5 kilograms). Not 96.5, not 97.2, not 95.6, but exactly 95.5. I found it was a matter of self-discipline combined with a significant negative reinforcement (feeling like hell after dialysis). I also placed a black glass scale next the refrigerator and step on it anytime I want something to eat or drink. Knowing the price to be paid if I am over 95.5, I only eat or drink enough to reach that number. My weight awareness borders on bizarre, you can ask me any time 24/7 and I can tell you exactly how much I weigh but doing it this way allows me to function as close to a ‘normal’ life as I can.
I have learned that my weight is totally about what I put into my mouth, nothing else matters. There is no way on earth that I could sweat off 10 pounds every day short of becoming a marathon runner; there are great health reasons to exercise but weigh loss is not one of them in my situation.
I lived the first 55 years of my life eating and drinking as I liked, I totally took this for granted; now I cherish every bite of food or sip of tea. I had to have an epiphany and decided to give up drinking/eating for enjoyment and moving to drinking/eating only to stay alive.

When we were in elementary school..my mother put my sister and myself on the Beeline at Chatham, N.Y. It went to North Adams and my Aunt drove down from Readsboro Vt. to pick us up. Many fond memories of early 1950s small town America in Readsboro..the 4 of July was something else with the huge bonfire,fireworks and pie eating contests.

The "Beeliners" were rail diesel cars see RDC operated by the New York Central Railroad.
Originally, RDCs had plain stainless steel ends. However, in the 1950s, a fatal wreck occurred at Palmer, Massachusetts, that involved an RDC striking a car. This caused the federal government to require that both ends of RDCs be painted in bright colors to make them more visible. The New York Central painted their RDCs in black and yellow stripes, thus their nickname "Beeliners".

Hey Phil. The badge is his marksmanship rating. He scored expert and gets to wear the crossed rifles. They had portraits in his squad bay of all of the marines and officers in his chain of command. Many did not score expert so the crossed rifles are kind of a big deal. The ribbon is for "Civil Defense" (I think) but all marines are entitled to that ribbon.

The other night I saw some politician in a debate say he was going to pay out a ‘freedom dividend’ to some American families. Huh?
I think that we already have freedom dividends. Freedom dividends that were paid for in the past by everyone who served and gave us our freedoms. Freedom dividends that are currently being paid by folks like your son who serving now.
A huge thank you to all who have previously served, those who are currently serving and to their all of their families. We all should appreciate the true freedom dividends that those who have served have gifted to us.

Wow ! when i was 18 we got our draft cards..because we had to but mainly to avoid hassles when we ordered a beer. It was common at the time to enlist in your own prefered branch of service rather than have the draft hover over you. Skip ahead 10 years and my kids were born at the height of the Viet Nam mess..my sons grew up listening to Bob Dylan and the Beatles and had no interest in military discipline..they did not get into fights, they were a long way from the ruffians i grew up with.

At the August auction there were three lots:-
a) 1851-2000 with a few later in two stockbooks with sets, part sets, odds and blocks Also United Nations mint & used with much in sets.....Estimate £50.....(sold for £45)
b) 1972 - 1989 year packs duplicated to four of each (35) also six other packs/books. Mint stamps face value c $190................Estimate £35........(sold for £32 )
c) 1990's to 2006. 86 different U.M. sheetlets Face value $570. Stc £2,136....Est £120....sold £150.
There is sometimes some good USA included in worldwide collections but it may not be worthwhile buying the whole collection for a few USA stamps.
The bulk of what we see is the much duplicated common stamps in stockbooks.

Our one and only local stamp shop is open for a few hours on Tuesdays only. I visited the shop today. A guy came in with an inventory list of used blocks of four US stamps from the 1940s through 1960s. He inherited the stamps from his uncle. He wanted to sell them, and commented on their scarcity, because the stamps were "old". The dealer was very nice, informing him on the lack of value for those items. The guy left, probably not very happy, but those were the facts of life.

My friend Mike went to a clinic and paid $200 to get assessed - then was prescribed a personalized keto diet and lost 12 lbs.
I heard it was controversial - that high-fat could lead to heart and stroke issues - and that a plant-based diet was more healthy. But being smarter than Mike, I skipped the $200 clinic fee and just started the keto diet based on a photocopy of his program.
Then, two weeks later, a friend told me Mike had died suddenly. I panicked and went to the clinic and my family doctor. It cost me $500 but they assured me it was extremely low-risk in my case.
I called Mike's mom to find out how this miracle diet had gone so wrong. She said, "well he stepped off the curb and that's when the bus hit him..."
Can any lawyers out there advise if I can sue his estate to get my $500 back?

My best friends brother-in-law, and fellow Steelers-Buddy (apologies to your Jags) fought in Vietnam and I was told he was a "full-bird" colonel. He passed away two years ago and I never asked, but what does "full-bird" mean"? Is there a half-bird colonel?
BTW, at our last game together in Cincinnati about 5 years ago, a couple jackasses grabbed his "terrible towel" as we were leaving the stadium. He wheeled around and said (not yelled - just said, but very assertively) "you hand that back, and you do it now sir". I swear that a few dozen people around us just stopped cold and held our breath. Thanks for the positive thoughts regarding my son. Yeah, they still use that slogan haha. America has had a longstanding love affair with their United States Marines Corps. I will get in my car at 3:00 AM and make the 7 hour drive to Camp Lejeune to spend some time with him.

Winter hit us in Colorado Thursday and Friday as well. Snow and cold. Temperatures dropped to single digits Farenheit or around -13C. Many slick roads and accidents. However, it cleared out Friday night. At 3:30 PM mountain time Saturday, it's back to autumn with temps back in the 70s Farenheit. 65 degree temperature change is killing my sinuses!

After the front moved through Colorado, it dipped south into Texas. Temperatures here dropped 40 degrees F overnight. Still mid 50s to mide 60s for today was a nice break from the upper 90s we've been having. We'll go back up to the 90s later this week, and then down the temperatures go again. That's October in Texas! You can send us rain, if you please. We really need it.

I think we got away very lightly, Winnipeg and Portage got it worse, they even had broken main transmission line pylons at Portage. Broke the historical local precipitation record for the day by 20cm.
Michael, I'll swap you a box of snow for some of that warm weather.

Hey Bob! Thank you so very much for the kind words. That means alot to me. I actually just drove up to see him this past weekend. Hes at Camp Geiger in North Carolina. He got 8 hours of liberty Saturday and Sunday. I couldnt keep him overnight but we had a really nice time and I got a chance to meet some of his buddies. It was really nice up there with highs in the 70s. I took my pup Charlie up there and we found some nice spots to enjoy being outside. Thanks again Bob. Hope you're having a nice fall season. -Ernie

We are back to the mid-90s today, and will drop to the 60s late tonight for tomorrow.
We have been getting some rain. That is good! It is coming as often we do in the summer from the tropical disturbance in the Pacific Ocean near the Baja Peninsula. People think we get battered by the storms in the gulf. That is usually the case along the gulf coast. In central Texas, we normally get little to no rain from gulf storms.

Ian, not sure the bunch of them are worth voting for. I'm sure that if all the facts now known, regarding the terms of the deal/backstop etc, had been put before the public at the original referendum the result would have been different.
I'm still at a loss as to why the NI situation was seemingly not at the forefront of debate until the terms of the deal were known.
Well done to England in the Rugby, sad for Ireland but hopes for Wales tomorrow.

I would have been quite happy to leave with or without any kind of deal.
During the last year none of the popular media have highlighted what the EU is planning for the future.
Little mention of the European Army, Uniting the Central Banks, All Taxes raised by each country to be paid to the EU who will then re-distribute the money whichever way they think fit. etc etc etc.
Even last night the main BBC News bulletin never even reported what was in the European Councils Communique. Censorship??
When you speak to the general population at large all they do is repeat like parrots what their political party leader has spouted or the sound bites brought forth by the media. They have no knowledge of how the EU came about and how it has progressed to this point or that the main aim is still for the EU to become a Socialist United States of Europe.
Remember it all started by half a dozen guys in Switzerland during the latter part of WWII. It started with cooperation over Coal, Iron and Steel, it proceeded to become the EEC with six members, then 13 member states, then the Common Market, now the European Union. There was the treaty of Rome, the Maastrict Treaty and the Lisbon Treaty. During the Maastrict Treaty the Irish voted NO to it, had a second referendum on it and said YES. We the British never even got a vote on it as John Major got Parliament to sign up to it without us getting a chance to vote on it.
Sir Winston Churhill said it was a good idea for Europe BUT NOT for the United Kingdom.
Time for drinkie-poos now that we are splashing about in a lake of Single Malt Whisky thanks to The Donald

Alcohol prices vary widely by each state depending on how much they are taxed. It is the same for cigarettes. In some states like NC, a centralized government body (often called ABC for Alcohol Beverage Control) sells distilled spirits (like Scotch) while local grocery stores sell beer and wine. There are still a couple of NC countries that do not allow sales.
I doubt the tax increase will impact sales that much.

The United States have put a 25% IMPORT Tariff on all Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
ie if a bottle of single malt is valued at $10 an extra $2.50 goes to the US Government therefore it will cost the importer $12.50 rather than $10. The extra $2.50 will be passed onto the importers customers ie YOU
All because of the European Unions state aid to Airbus.
The irony is that if the UK had already left the EU the US would not have put on the 25% Tariff!!

The steam would come out your ears, you couldn't breathe and you needed someone to slap you hard on the back so you could draw breath. It would take five minutes for your eyes to re-focus and ten minutes for your brain to say "that was fantastic, hit me with another shot of that stuff!!!!"

Not my favorite either. Scotch without peat isn't worth the time. Lagavulin, Laphroigh and for those on a thinner budget there's some single malt stuff called McClelland
or something akin that can be had locally for $24. When i was youth with peculiar tastes for my time all those peats were White Horse distilleries and very cheap. Jack daniels bought up a lot of them and ever since then the price got jacked up. I have a fond memory of sitting in a bar in van with a yank who according to his tale had sold a bunch of aircraft simulators - we disposed of two bottles of islay malt at bar price so he always sits high in my recall8

I'm pleased to report that they were successful and won the entire $150,000 for the new roof and chimney project! Yea!

I migrated from win 7 to win 10. I have seen one issue so far (docking station audio not working) but nothing else so, Of course, Microsoft changed all the default apps to their apps (Edge, etc). It was listed as activated so confirms Microsoft is still allowing free upgrades to prior registered versions.

Last Sunday at the flea market was one of the weirdest days ever there. For example, a guy came into my booth and demanded a refund for an item that he bought that didn't work. I tried to explain to him that I was not going to give him a refund. He was upset and kept interrupting me, which prevented me from finishing what I was trying to say. He continued that he was frustrated over his purchase and wanted a refund. I told him again that I could not give him a refund. He started up again. This time I interrupted him and said that it was simple. I was not going to give him a refund, because he did not buy the item from me. Geepers!

I have had similar.
A couple came in to a shop I was working in. She came out with a tirade that she wanted a new item to replace a broken one. She produced the receipt and delivery note and when I could eventually get a word in I produced a brochure that showed that her item was 6 years old and well outwith the guarantee and her invoice was for something different. I said I would repair the item but it would cost. The husband agreed and as they left I heard him say to her "See you and your big mouth".

I know I am fortunate to have two auction houses within a 30 mile radius and a genuine stamp auction with 400 to 500 lots every couple of months in an 80 mile radius.
I once went to an auction to view the stamps. "She who must be obeyed" came along. She noticed a chair that she wanted for a large teddy bear she has, to sit on.
On the day of the auction I went to the stamps and she went to a different room where the chair was being sold.
When we met later I asked her if she got the chair. She didn't buy it as the price was too high. However she had bought a 17th century 5 foot Oak Chest AND a Welsh Dresser !!
The teddy bear still hasn't a chair to sit on!!!

I have a week of respite from that chore yet. (Ours are in the cellar) My good lady always puts up two trees, one silver or gold with only glass ornaments and mementos and white lights, the other with coloured lights and decorations.
These and the outside house lights will not get turned on until about the 16th.
As a child it was always the 18th. which was my parents wedding anniversary, as we children got older we were entrusted to put up the tree and decorations while they went out for the evening. That was the days of paper garlands across the room and I still think they look much nicer than the glittery foil ones that are sold now.
Oh such memories.

Wednesday was a crazy day at our house. My wife woke me up to say there was a raccoon acting strange in our backyard. She said he was up on the deck and just stared at her when she knocked on the window.
We watched this guy stumble around the yard, taking the same path over and over. He must've been up on the deck a couple of times. He wasn't right. I called the town and they sent over two police officers. They told me that there had been several reports of this raccoon in the past few days, and he disappeared before the animal control officer could show up.
This time they kept an eye on him and eventually were able to just walk up to him and drop a garbage can over him. We put a few patio blocks on top of it and waited. The animal control officer showed up and took him away.
The verdict was that he wasn't displaying signs of rabies, but possibly had distemper. He did have to go since it's highly contagious.
I had a neighbor call me while this was happening, asking why there were two police cars in front of my house. In the end I sent a message out via our neighborhood email chain letting everyone know that the odd raccoon had been removed.

Years ago in one of my other lives, the animal control officer for our city called for help with a wild animal. I got the call, and went. It was a skunk. It was running back and forth in front of someone's house. The animal control officer thought it had distemper, and asked me to get close enough up to it so that I wouldn't shoot it in the head. They need the brains to test for distemper and rabies. I told him he was nuts, and I wasn't going to get up to the skunk and get the skunk juice all over me. I stood on the curb, and shot it through the heat. I left to let the animal control officer pick it up. It did test positive for distemper.
