I wonder if the kids still read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, much less Otto of the Silver Hand by Howard Pyle! What exciting pleasure they gave young boys back in the day.

re: i wonder if the kids still read Treasure Island !

I just re-read Treasure Island a few weeks ago and a few months ago I re-watched the old TV series with Robert Newton - rated Arrrrrrr! Still one of the best stories out there. I remember there was an awful TV series years ago called Swiss Family Robinson and a mini-series a few years ago (or a short lived series) called Crusoe.

The name Captain Smollett sticks in my brain, when the good crew members were fighting off the pirates.I was not an outgoing kid until High School, had a vivid imagination and read a lot of books.

Coming to TV This Fall: Everything

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/12/arts/television/fall-tv-calendar.html

I started working my way down this list. There were so many new shows, thru so many different channels & services, that my brain began to fog and my eyes began to glaze over.

Then I hit a subtitle - October - and I realized that the bath I had just taken was only the new shows beginning in September.

Just close your eyes, and repeat after me:

Podcasts are the new books.

Read Treasure Island as a youngster but always enjoyed Wind in the Willows, which I continue to read as I get into my 70's, still takes me away to my childhood.

One positive I can claim is to never have stopped reading. Adventure, Sci-Fi, Biographies, classics.. anything that I could and can get my hands on. As you say, sparked the imagination of a lil boy and still stirs a middle aged fella who still has plenty of pirating ahead of him !!

But of course that is right after I finish sorting this new lot of stamps ! :-)

BTW - Treasure Island was great, but my son loved the book Hook. Which was the story of Hooks childhood. Was fantastic.

re: i wonder if the kids still read Treasure Island !

When I was cleaning out my parents house, I found my father had saved all those high school assigned reading paperbacks on one shelf. A lot of old classics. I took them all home and read a few. Classics are wasted on the youth! Big Grin

Here's an interesting story... in a car magazine I read that John Steinbeck's book, "Travels With Charley" started the 1960s camper craze in the USA. So I got a hold of the book and read it again while on business travel.

I did some research and found out that Steinbeck's old camper was found and restored. It resides in the Steinbeck Center in California. I thought it would make an interesting model car, so I started collecting the parts. I even found a scale poodle to make Charley!

The irony... in my model car circles, I only have come across ONE guy who had even heard of the book! Fortunately he had read it and is as enthusiastic about the project as I am!
