I do this too, but with some people I am writing to. I mentioned to one person how nice their house looks in a letter, a "penpal" group from an online pen shop in Toronto. Never heard from him!
I had to chuckle. I guess he thought I was stalking him!
But I check out google maps to see what the area around a destination looks like too. It's great when you are venturing someplace new!
Ooooo I love to google the town of a new trading friend! I’m not so much interested in what their house looks like, but where they are geographically.
Ya know, I bet that many of us enjoy looking at maps. How about a new word, ummm “cartoholics? Mapophiles? Any who, When I was in kindergarten, my sisters hung a map of Europe in the kitchen and they quizzed me on the countries and capitols, rivers, mountains etc until I was giving them the correct answers most of the time. In first grade they put up a world map. Between the maps and the shoebox full of stamps from dad I just had to become a stamp collector.
"... How about a new word ..."
Me Likey, Ikey Pikey! Guess I’m a cartophiliac then!

Don't worry; there's probably a Twelve Step program, once you hit the bottom of the map.
Cheers,

I love Google Street View! I like to pull up areas and walk the streets. I've gotten good at navigating and often will take a look at somewhere I'm going so I know what to expect when I get there. Other times I just do fun stuff...
Today I was cruising one of my favorite cover sellers on eBay. And I came across this one... I didn't buy it because it's not in my collecting area, but thought it was a nice old cover. Which got me thinking... is that building still there?
And consulting Google Street View, Nope! Look at the scene today! That little marker for "127 Michigan 10" is where 127 E Jefferson Avenue once was! That is the Detroit Municipal Center and our little 1927 store was in the traffic lanes, no doubt knocked down for the major improvements to Jefferson Ave becoming a main highway!
Ah Progress! And when driving through places today we never think back to when there were thriving neighborhoods that are long gone!
