We were walking by the river today on one of he old estates New York State lets us recreate on for our tax payer dollars. i looked down the bank and saw a deer lying in the mud just short of the water. I know that animals head for water when they are injured.I went down to look..the poor thing was trying to gasp or breathe, i was going to put an end to it but my wife said no,she wasn't raised in the country like myself..no matter in a couple of minutes the doe passed and her eyes glazed over. Why did she end up like that an apparently healthy deer with no visible damage. Was she hit by an automobile on the highway a couple of miles away and just ran in terror til she got there . There were no bites or marks on her like she had been chased by dogs or coyotes. You never know what you are going to see in nature.

Google CWD (chronic wasting disease or "zombie disease"). Could that be a possibility?

re: a sad sight today

Fortunately, CWD hasn't been detected in New York since 2005, so that is unlikely. Deer are also immune to Lyme disease. Given the proximity to water, I'd vote for Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, which has been confirmed this fall in Phil's part of the state. Infected deer run a high fever, and search out water, often wallowing in the cool mud or moist ground. It is NOT transmissible to humans, so Phil and his wife are safe. Phil, you might want to notify the DEC about your discovery, as they do monitor these outbreaks. It's caused by biting flies, so it will run its course (for the season) once the weather turns cold.

re: a sad sight today

Hello Tom, we stayed at the scene and notified the park people, two vehicles showed up a lady in green uniform in a SUV and some type of park police officer in a squad car. I hope the carcass was taken for some type of examination and not tossed in a compost pile, like some local road workers do.
