James,
Your are correct. I must have had this old brain disengaged. I am also an Army vet.
Thank you Vets and vets families.
Don
My father was an Air Force veteran, and was in the Korean War. He was proud of his service. Perhaps it was fitting that he was buried on Veteran's Day in 1996. He was only 65.
I honestly dont think "Happy Veterans Day" sounds bad. "Happy Memorial Day" is definitely a no no. Just my opinion and I could certainly understand if someone felt otherwise.
As my sister, a Gold Star widow, is fond of pointing out on Facebook every year, (US) Memorial Day is to honor those who died in service to the country, and Veteran's Day is to honor those who served.
One of the local Hairdressing salons did a beautiful Rememberance Day display in their window. They also had arranged for a Piper to play a lament after the Two Minutes Silence.
On Rememberance Day we hold a two minutes silence at 11 minutes past the 11th hour on the 11 Day of the 11 month.
My father was with the British 1st Airborne Division dropped in Arnhem 17th Sept 1944. He was also one of the lucky one who were withdrawn via Operation Berlin 25th - 26st Sept.
The British 1st Airborne Division lost nearly three quarters of its strength and did not see combat again.
He died in the 1970's on the 26st.Sept the same day of their extraction from Arnhem.
"LEAST WE FORGET"
My uncle was also at Arnhem and was one of the lucky ones to get out.
He later "boasted" that he liberated Norway.
My father was the last of his family to arrive back in blighty as he was part of the "forgotten" 14th Army in Burma.
We all owe a great debt to everyone who served and those that were lost during that conflict and its aftermath.
Brechinite, Your Uncle and my Dad may have been in the same outfit. See attached citation from King Olaf of Norway thanking my father for his "valuable services in helping to restore freedom to our land"
Hope you can read it ok - hard to photo whilst behind the glass frame - it hangs in my office, over the years it has faded a bit.
Sorry I can not get the photo to load- I have reduced it's size yet SOR keeps telling me it is to large. I'll try again later.
As a boy you would hear the stories that my father and uncles would tell. Some would stick in the mind others you cannot recall.
There were one or two who would never mention what happened to them. Each one had their own way of dealing with their experiences some would talk others would say nothing.
The only thing that one of my uncles would say was that he worked with the Dutch Resistance and once spent three months hiding in an attic. No details were ever revealed.
It was his way of coping with what must have happened to him and his comrades.
Hopefully we should never ever see another conflict like that.
Brechinite I'm sorry but I can not get the photo of the citation to load, yet the same size photo I can load on other forums etc - have to get the grandkids to try.
Dad never spoke about the war and mum told us not to ask. When the book "A Bridge to Far"
came out in 1974 I purchased it for him-- it upset him so much that to this day I regret buying it for him- I still have the book.
I did my time in the army but never saw anything as bad as they did. As you say lets hope we never see conflicts like that again.
"KEEP ALL CURRENTLY SERVING TROOPS SAFE AND LET THEM COME HOME TO THEIR LOVED ONES"
My dad was born in Liverpool in 1887, and served in the artillery in France in 1917-8. He said very little about it. My mum, who was younger, once recalled a soldier who returned from WW1 to her Shropshire village with shellshock - she wept remembering how he would shout and cower in the street for years afterwards. In her turn she lived through the WW2 blitz - my brother was born in 1940. I arrived in 1944, and missed most of the action! But I can remember rationing.
Happy Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day to all of our Veteran's. Stay safe.
