I think, therefore I am - I think!

I have something I would really like to complain about, and it applies to almost all aspects of today's society. I'll keep it simple rather than ramble on as I usually do. I watch certain sports on YouTube, one being pool and snooker. I used to be able to find the entire match, now all I can find is what they call "the shortened version. They chop up any commentary and just show the individual shots, and sometimes leave out the "boring parts" like safety play and break offs. Can you imagine what a soccer game would look like if they did this to it? It drives me up the wall!!
I bet it also affects stamp collecting. I must admit that sometimes I don't want to spend a lot of time identifying individual stamps, but since it is part of our wonderful hobby, I wait until I am in the mood and do it! I see many people asking for help identifying stamps, and in some cases there is a good need for it - some of the early stuff is very difficult. But is it also an indication of the lack of patience in today's society? I know this makes me sound like an "old fart", bur I'm just curious about what others think about this. Don't put me down too much about this, but I really think most of us should "slow down and smell the roses". I've seen a couple posts where people are complaining that stamp collecting is too much work! If stamp collecting starts to become a chore then just QUIT DOING IT! Angry

re: Total lack of patience in today's world

Harvey, I'm going to type this slowly so that you know I'm being patient.
It seems that all of society has gotten into the instant response mode and requires everything to happen in the blink of an eye, or quicker.
I recall watching some the snooker finals back in the days of Taylor, Davis, Higgins, White when we would be glued to the tv for hours. It was the safety play that really made the game so fascinating.
Coming back to the stamp world, I guess I get impatient when I look at approval books where the stamps are not only out of any sort of order but overlapping, damaged (not described) and with maybe 3 stamps on a vario the whole page is shown, loads of blank space. Most times I just don't bother with the rest of the book or other items from that seller.
Yes I do have to be in the right frame of mind to sort by watermarks, perfs and the light has got to be right, but hey there's always manyana.
Mind you with Formula 1 they could just show start and finish laps.
Off to the garden now to see if the seeds I planted at 9am today have come up yet.

re: Total lack of patience in today's world

Vic, you brought up a point I never thought of. I also don't have enough patience to handle some of the approval books and many times I just say "to Hell with it". I collect Poland and Russia and when a book shows up with stamps from these two areas, and the stamps are in no order what-so-ever, I don't have the patience to look carefully through my album for each stamp. Sometimes I miss stamps I need and sometimes I get frustrated and buy stamps I already have. Before the sellers complain, yes it is your right to be unorganized, but it really is difficult sometimes to figure out whether or not to buy your stamps. BUT THAT'S MY PROBLEM, NOT YOURS!!

re: Total lack of patience in today's world

i will admit that the world's got faster in many ways, fueled mostly by the ever-quickening pace made possible by computers. Two seconds is an immense amount of time to wait for a query to show results, and yet, pre-computers, we wouldn't have yet pulled a book off the shelf to look at the ToC or index to begin our own search.

I will say that many of the examples aren't necessarily indicative of impatience but, rather business models and the level of acumen of our more junior stamp collectors.

I just spent an enjoyable three days culling a Scott worldwide album. It was all time spent doing as close to nothing as one gets, looking at a stamp or set and then the catalogue, repeat. For a junior collector, s/he's not likely to be familiar with either the albums or the catalogues, hence the requests for help. Like fishing, it is essential we give them a little line, reel, more line, reel, repeat. They're learning and we're the ones exercising patience as they begin the introductory aspects of collecting, learning "WF" is not only the flanking two of three letters but part of the most difficult US series that often begets that full acronym.

D (sorry, just don't have tme t fns sgng off)

The shortest time known to man is reported to be the New York second, that is the moment the vehicle behind you takes to use his horn when the traffic lights change to green.

Stamp collecting could/should be an elective subject. Some things seem like too much work but we have to do them anyway..like caring for an ill friend or relative.

Joe:-

You'll just have to give up trying to watch the snooker and watch the NRL (Rugby League) from Australia instead.

https://www.nrl.com/tv

Registration is free and you get quick highlights, extended highlights and full matches.
OK there is a day or two delay before the matches are shown but far better than two minutes on Youtube.

For the Snooker have you tried:- https://wst.tv/watch-live/eurosport-player/

or BBC Sport https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/snooker

or BBC Iplayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

re: Total lack of patience in today's world

Thanks Ian. I've never been interested in Rugby, but I am tempted to sign up for the Eurosport options. A friend of mine uses it for Soccer, excuse me, football! My computer is a bit out of date and I baby it a bit. When I upgrade, probably this fall, I'll probably sign up for Eurosport. I didn't really need to before this year, the drive to watch the cut back versions just started a short time ago. I could always watch full versions up to this year. As I said, patience has only become a problem lately. Possibly it's Covid related, more likely it's a society related problem!!!

There are two codes of rugby, Union and League.

It would appear that the Union guys are more rowdy than the League guys.

We have a saying in Old Caledonia "Soccer is a game played by gentlemen but watched by hooligans. Rugby is a game played by hooligans but watched by gentlemen"
