USA is way out in front in the auction area.

Rest of Europe is more than one country to me.

Canada has so little for sale in the auctions.

No wonder it is confusing.

I am half Scottish, 1/4 Spanish and a 1/4 English but a true blue Aussie.

On a good day I am a Scottish berserker with Hot Spanish blood and have the scars to prove it unfortunately.

English, Irish, Scottish & Dutch. My grandfather's family on my mother's side came over from England in 1632. My mother's mother came over from Rotterdam in the late 1800's.

When I visited Australia while in the Navy, I checked out a local phone book to see if there were any Parkin's. To my amazement there was about two pages of listings for them. Locally, there are about 3 listings. I said to my friend "Wow, look how many Parkin's are in the phone book". His reply was "Sure, wasn't Australia a penal colony back in the day"? Ouch!

re: What Nationality Are You?

Some years ago, one of my children brought home a project from school. They were to ask parents about ancestry. The purpose was to show the ethnic diversity of the class and I hope to promote tolerance of each other.
It may have been around St Patrick's Day or else Columbus Day when the accent on Hyphnated-Americans usually comes to the fore.
My famly was diverse but the strongest connection was with my mother's Irish Catholic roots. But because I felt some of that was overdone as I was growing up, I had determined not to raise my kids that way. When they asked I said they were American-Americans.
However this school project got me to thinking and gathering some data for the kids and eventually led me to collecting geneology information.
.
My personal ancesters were Irish, English, Scots, Danes and Norwegian.
Over the years I have traced these forebears back to the first decades of the 1800s, and later added my original penciled notes and diagrams to a Family Tree program on the computer. Combining that with links to my wife's family our children have Irish, English, Scots, German, Native American, French Canadian, Danish and Norwegian ancesters that I can document in varying proportions.
Then as my children have married and started families I continued the Family Tree, adding branches and other limbs including Czech, Italian, Spanish, Mexican and Afro-American links with a current total of over 800 individual names listed, mostly with birth, marriage and death dates and place names, now extending in a few links to the mid-1700s.
.
In many countries diversity is but a concept they read about in texts on strange foreign cultures and many have lived in the same town or province for hundreds of years. Some families have occupied the same farmhouse since what to us were colonial times. A trip to the church graveyard or baptismal record book yields their ancesters for many generations.
But in the USA, and I suppose Canada as well, people immigrated and integrated with only sporatic records having been kept so the search continues and gets quite interesting at times.
But at least in later years when one of the grandkids mentioned her class doing a similar project I have been able to just open my computer file and print out an extensive family history, often far more than the teacher expected..

re: What Nationality Are You?

Well, I'm a born American, but my roots go every which way. On my father's side I am German--the earliest ones coming over in the 1730's. On my mother's side I am French Huguenot (arr. 1696), Scots, Irish and English, but the most recent ones arrived here in the early 1800's. There may be some other nationalities in there, but if so I haven't been able to ferret them out and genealogy is one of my passions (which, combined with postal history, makes for interesting combinations). Oh yeah, the Scots/Irish name goes back to the Normans so ultimately I guess I'm Viking of some sort as well.... Much of my collecting interest (aside from postal history) is also connected to my genealogy. It's fun and will never make my children rich, but I'm having a ball.

re: What Nationality Are You?

Being from a suburb of Detroit I grew up with Greeks, Hungarians, Slav's and Poles who immigrated to Detroit for high paying jobs in the late 1800's through the mid 20th Century.

Having been adopted in a closed adoption my real ethnicity or nationality was always a mystery to me. Living in a ethnically diverse area as a kid when asked I just picked a nationality to suit my mood. I just added a vowel, a "ous" a "ski" or a "ich" to the end of my name.

Youpoao mentioned Hamtramck. It is a very interesting city and worth a visit. In 2010 14.5% of Hamtramck's population was of Polish origin in 1970 it was 90% Polish. Over the past thirty years a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (Yemen, Bangladesh) a long with a significant Bosnian population moved into the city. As of the 2010 American Community Survey, the city's foreign born population stood at 41.1% making it Michigan's and one of the worlds most internationally diverse cities. I visit Hamtramck for the best Polish food this side of Poland. And a few miles from Hamtramck is Dearborn the largest middle eastern population outside the middle east.

Sadlt unlike most other countries in the US (The Melting Pot) immigrants lose their cultural identity and customs within a couple generations. When my kids ask what nationality I am I now tell them I am from the third rock from the sun.

I'm a totally American mongrel, being made up of English, Irish, Dutch, Scotch (no, not the drink), a little German and who knows what else.

We came to Florida 35 years ago, from Dearborn, as Michael mentioned, and were sadly depressed with the whole city of Detroit during our last visit there, especially with the loss of the neighborhood's Michael mention. All of the old ethnic neighborhoods, in the Detroit area, used to be so well maintained and beautiful, with their gardens of veggies and flowers. My wife was born and raised in Dearborn and it is certainly a mecca for all of the sand dune countries now, whose people do seem to be friendly enough and take care of their houses and such, but it is nothing like the Dearborn we knew and loved, especially when Mayor Hubbard was in charge!

Hi All
I was born and spent the first 27 years of my life in the UK,before emigrating to Australia in the early 70s.Best move we ever made.We have both become Australian citizens.
My wife and I have just returned from a holiday in the UK ,first time back in 40 odd years, even though it was nice to catch up with family and friends neither of us would go back to live.

I almost envy you, Brian.
In the early 1970s when my wife and I first married we considered emigrating to Australia quite seriously but between children coming along every three years and difficulties selling our homes and my business it kept getting kicked down the road.
The best we could do fifteen years later was move 1,300 miles south to Florida.
Every once in a while she and I wonder about how different our lives might have been.

I was born in the U.S. in 1942 but am only second generation American as my maternal grandfather immirated to the U.S. from Germany as a baby in 1899. All of my family came from Germany so I am definitely German American. My children will be a larger mix as my first wife was Italian and Irish. I'm not sure on my second wife but I know she had some native Indian roots. Cherokee I think. She was from the mountains of Tennessee, north east of Chatanooga. My father always teased her that one leg was shorter than the othe from walking around thee side of the mountains. Her grandfather pioneered the mountains outside of Dayton, Tennessee, home of the Scopes Monkey Trial. His log cabin up in the mountains had no electriciy and he lived there until he was 80+. Winters finally forced him down. In the summer though it could be 110 in Chatanooga and 70 at is cabin and you could see the Smokie mountains rolling off in the distance. It was beautiful.
I live in Illinois on the Mississippi river due west of Chicago in the City of Rock Island I was born in Peoria, Illinois about 90 miles from here and except for four years in military service have lived here all of my life. I've only been out of the US four times. I was in Mexico twice, Canada once and Korea once with an hour layover each way in Japan.

We are truly, as they say, the "melting pot" of nations.....

Since my mother's heritage is made up of 4 or 5 different nationalities and the same is true for my father, I would have to say that I am pure american!

As far as in name, my family name of 'Kerr" originated off the coast of Scotland according to my family history research from years ago.

Being that I'm into genealogy as well.... I know of German (1735 immigration and later); French Huguenot (1695 into South Carolina); English (Jamestown and later as well). The 2 prominent are German and English; there may be some Dutch, Welsh & Scots, but they're still nebulous. BUT, I consider myself American--the others simply connect me to my forebears.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I already posted, but perhaps a little more specificity (no, that's not a town in Montenegro) is warranted.

three of my four grandparents' families are what are called Danube Schwabbes: Germanic people (there was no Germany, but there were states) who migrated on the Danube, with Schwabia as the point of embarkation, regardless of where they lived. This was in the 16 and 17th centuries, when Germany had people and much of Central Europe did not. They travelled, by boat, to a town in Hungary (Hungary was part of the Hapsburg Empire, and co-habitants of the throne), probably in the Caucasus Mountains in what is now Romania and was, and is, Transylvania. Their names were Prinzinger, Schuler (mit umlaut), and Teisler. A fourth, my mother's line, is a Szekel, which were among the original tribes of Hungary, descendants of Asiatic peoples of the steppes. Szekels figure in Bram Stoker's original book as conquerors of the Magyars, another of the tribes, and that which lent its name to the Hungarian peoples and country.

When Transylavania was ceded from Hungary to Romania in the Treaty of Versailles, the ethnic Hungarians who could leave, did. Romanians and Hungarians share much music, taste in fabrics, and spirited animosity. The villages of my ancestors look much like they did when they first immigrated there, whether out of nostalgia or being on the wrong end of the political and economic stick, I don't know.

My wife is essentially Irish (O'Malley married O'Toole), with her mom out of Belfast and her dad out of the coal fields of western Pennsylvania. She has a touch of Welsh in her, but a touch only.

My daughter is Cantonese, from Guangzhou on the Pearl River, 75 miles west of Hong Kong. She and her mom, despite their ethnic differences, are spitting images of one another inside and out.

All three of us are glad to be Americans and proud of the heritages that we bring to this table.

Finally, my dog, like me, traces her roots to Germany, where her sister has racked up several V1 titles as finest German shepherd in Europe. She immigrated here just under two years ago and has her own passport. You can't make this up.

I realize I am a little late to this party. Chinese American. Born in the USA, mom and dad were from what was known as Canton, China (now Guangzhou). My wife is also from Guangzhou. So David, your post on your daughter really perked my ears up. I guess we all make the world go around.

I'm an Indian - not the Native American but from India. Ancestors came from Mongolia conquering China and Afghanistan. I'm told by elders that we are decendants of Genghis Khan, Halaku Khan, Taimur and Babar (the first Moghul) but that ancestry is too much diluted now. Have a hand drawn Family-Tree in urdu language tracing back some 15 generations to 'Dost Mohammad Khan, Nawab of Bhopal'(check Wikipedia).
Me, my wife and son were all born in the city within 4 klicks of where we live now.

There was a pretty interesting article on Genghis Khan in the December 10, 2012, issue of NEWSWEEK. If you have Mongolian in your blood, there's a good chance that you are related to Khan. I have alot of Mongolian stamps. That's about as close as I get.

re: What Nationality Are You?

It is interesting to apply statistics to ancestry and a knowledge of the exponential expansion of the base "2" (2, 4, 8, 16, ...... 1024 in tn generations.) eg; two parentsm four grands, 8 great grands and so on.
Working backward and allowing about 20 years to each generation I have 1,024 ancestors by 1800. Then over a million by 1600 and a billion by the time of the Great Plague of 1350.
That is more than entire population of the Earth at that time
So it becomes logical to assume that in some way, my primary Norse and Irish ancestry should be able to be traced back to both Brian Boru and Sven Forkbeard.
Reversing the equations it is also quite likely that both Brian, Sven and Genghis, neither of whom are known to have been satisfied with merely a single spouse, have passed their seed on to just about any one of Nordic, Irish or Mongolian descent.
Thus I do not feel that I am being too inventive when I have thrilled by children and some of the grand children with tales of the adventures of Harald Bluetooth and his Dragon Ship
Some of these adventures may even be true.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I am an American married to an English woman whose parents were born in Poland. Her mother Janina was born near Lvov and at the age of 14 she and her family were shipped to Siberia by the Russians. Janine nearly died in the cattle car and her Mother put her off the train with the dead. Russian peasants found her alive and nursed back to health. Janina walked along the tracks until she found her family.

Stalin released the Poles to fight against Germany. Those that survived the Gulag made their way to Egypt to fight with the British. My father-in-law drove tanks through Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. They met in England and married at Yorkminster.

I have traced my paternal line back to 1755. I do not know where where my gggg Grandfather was born, but he lived on the Cheat river near the mouth of Sandy creek in 1777.

Charlie is quite right. A person who was alive a thousand years ago and had children is probably an ancestor.

My Grandmother was Yugoslavian and she met my GrandFather, whom I never met, during WW1 while he was stationed in Belgrade.
In 1988 I spent the most amazing few weeks in Yugoslavia with Family I had never previously met. I was treated like a King.
Some of those family members were killed during the terrible Civil War in the 1990's.
As a child I hardly ever had conversations with my Grandma as her age and her unwillingness to learn English made conversing difficult. She would talk to me in Serbian and we tried to get along !!

American, with traceable roots to 1600's and direct descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Robert Vick, born circa 1753-56, grandson of Robert Vick born circa 1690-93 Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The elder Vick was the son of Joseph Vick who immigrated circa 1674 from King's Stanley, Glouchestershire. Like most, many additional "spices" thrown into the stew along the way!

More specifically, born north of the Mason-Dixon line against my will and rectified the situation as soon as I graduated from college and have never lived north of it since. Split my adult life between Dallas, Texas and Western Kentucky. I miss Dallas, but I don't miss Texas.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I am a Minnesota Mutt.
My grandfather on my Dad's side was born in Ireland, Joseph Damien O'Flaherty was born in 1897 and moved here in 1903 with his large family. When they moved here they dropped the "O" to sound less Irish. (I still think that's funny) My grandma's parents came from Denmark sometime in the late 1800's.
On my moms side her great, great grandparents on both sides came from Germany sometime in the middle 1800's, although I have mail from my great grandpa from Germany as late as the early 20th century. The dates get blurred. My great grandpa may have moved back to Germany at some point.
I am moving my mom back to Minnesota next month after she has been in Texas for the last 28 years. One of my goals is to get names and dates of my ancestry nailed down and recorded while she is still with us.

I'm a new member and I liked the Nationality question. Thanks to my sister I have an
idea. First of all, I am 100% American. My dad's family hit the Virginia shores in 1640 from Wales and my mom's family went to North Carolina in 1775 from Ireland.

My sister's research has added several nationalities to this mix along the way.

re: What Nationality Are You?

"Nationality" is beginning to seem almost pointless in this increasingly cosmopolitan world. I am legally an American, to the American government, and both Canadian and an American to the Canadian government. My ancestors are, apparently, boringly English English English! I have spent the bulk of my adult years in Canada, so tell me, am I American, Canadian, or British?

Marriage, adoption, and emigration/immigration are making "nationality" more a political than an ethnic concept. I now live in Vancouver, where you are likely to hear Spanish, Farsi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Filipino, Hindi, Vietnamese, Korean, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Pashtun, Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, and Thai on the streets more often than English.

Believe it or not, my "extended family by marriage" includes the daughter of Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese naval aviator who led the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Here's a philatelic connection, one of two stamps issued by Japan in 1942, commemorating the Pearl Harbor attack:

re: What Nationality Are You?

What an interesting and varied group of folks!

I was born in Jersey City, NJ, USA in 1958 so that makes me an American. I am third generation, with all four of my grandparents born here.

Heritage wise, my father's father was German and his mother was Irish. My mother's mother was Italian and her father Irish. So I'm half Irish, a quarter German and a quarter Italian. I identify more as German since my last name is German and I lived there for a couple of years and can do very basic conversation in German.

My upbringing was interesting, I am the son of a career US Army officer. So we lived all over, Fort Riley, Kansas and Dayton, Ohio as a small child. My father was in Viet Nam in 1962 (before we admitted being there), so we lived in NJ. I do have some interesting APO postmark covers from that era.

Then my father got assigned to NATO and we moved to Izmir, Turkey in 1966-8, back to New Jersey for a year while my father was stationed in Korea, then off to Pirmasens Germany until 1972. My father managed to get assigned to Ft Monmouth, NJ for his last assignment before retiring. So we were able to settle down in a suburb where we intended to stay and finally own a house. My parents stayed in that house in Hazlet, NJ the rest of their lives.

I also stayed in that same town as an adult, owning two homes on different sides of town. Then I got the 'too good to be true' job offer in Pennsylvania, so we moved here! I've been in Exton, PA for 5 years in June.

re: What Nationality Are You?

This is not a competitive post however, here it is.

I was born in Lebanon when it was a French Mandate country. My family had French, Spanish and Lebanese papers. Now I only have US papers. The Spanish dates back to 1492, when the family (Jewish) was expelled from Spain, and as they lived in Northern Spain (Gerona and Burgos), they headed North. Eventually they escaped persecution in Europe by seeking refuge in the 1800s under the Ottoman Empire (Bulgaria), while always keeping their Spanish papers, and speaking 15th century Spanish (Ladino)!
While some in my family branch did make it to the promised land in the 20th century, I must admit that a bad sense of direction (and a lack of desire) is probably to blame for our immediate branch of the family inability to find the place (no GPS). I hear this is not an uncommon thing (Moses?)

Confused? Me too!
rrr...
When asked, I say Chinese, because it is really easier to explain than all the above!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread! A very interesting read.

I'm American, having lived in Indiana my entire life other than while serving in the Army for two years. Mom's family originated in Wales and arrived in the US (Maryland) around 1715. Dad's family came to Philadelphia from SW Germany in 1747 on the ship "Fane" sailing from Rotterdam.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread - glad it has continued. Its fascinating to read how far the membership of this club extends. Technology really has made this a small world.

I am born, raised and live in the Philly suburbs of Bucks County. My father's parents immigrated from Germany in the early '20s.

My maternal grandfather was born in the US, i am told he was Welsh by background and my maternal grandmother was born in England and moved here with her family when she was 3.

For some reason I always identified more with the German side - maybe because nothing beats good Sauerbraten and Spätzle.

re: What Nationality Are You?

Ancestry is wide ranging and includes English, French, Scottish, possible Irish, and a definite Creek Indian.

My wife's grandfather came to the USA as a baby but she was fascinated to discover that through my family her daughters could qualify for the Daughters of the American Revolution and for the Daughters of the Confederacy! Her background is German, Italian, and Czech (we think).

Born and raised in LA, that is, lower Alabama, with stints in the panhandle of Florida: most of my relatives lived in or near Millry, AL but since my father was a Methodist pastor we lived everywhere else including Notasulga, AL, Excel, AL, Byrneville, FL, Greensboro, AL, Bagdad, FL, Slocomb, AL, and Birmingham, AL. Enjoying mostly cool, dry summers in the Seattle, Washington area now.

Introduced to stamp collecting in the 6th grade by my fellow classmate Laury Lee in Bagdad, FL. We both moved away after the 7th grade as our fathers moved to new church assignments. My first two merit badges in Boy Scouts were for Stamp Collecting and Coin Collecting. It seemed like I would never find a roulette stamp which was one of the items I needed to qualify for the badge but I finally found one at my grandmother's while going through some things she had saved over the years. Still remember the excitement of finding it in a drawer of a wardrobe and going to ask her if I could have it and getting permission!

From New Jersey - Dad's side of the family English, Irish, Scottish. Mom's side English & Dutch.

I used to like to look at local phone books when I traveled to see if there were any local Parkin's. There might be one or 2 but when I went to Australia (Perth) there seemed to be hundreds. I said to my friend standing next to me, hey look, there are a lot of people here with my last name. My friend said, sure there are, this is where England sent all their criminals... Ouch!!!!

Born and educated in the city state of Londinium, home of the first postage stamp and seat of power of an empire which now consists only of the United Kingdom. I live and have spent most of my life in the Land of Smiles, Thailand. My children were born here and have now moved, two to the north of Wales and one to Hokkaido. My forebears were part of the Irish emigration into Londinium where the towns own melting pot came into play. I would like to think of myself as a citizen of the world, or as the present British prime minister says in a rather unkind manner, a citizen of nowhere.

I too was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1923. i remember when growing up, especially during the time of the Brooklyn Dodgers, when Brooklyn was not considered part of the USA. It was just a "place".
Now living in NJ since 1989.

Wow! It is great stuff to see the cosmopolitan flavour coming out in our members.

Every once in a while she and I wonder about how different our lives might have been.

re: What Nationality Are You?

Me, my wife and son were all born in the city within 4 klicks of where we live now.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I'm an Ozzie, born in South Wales of Czech parents, currently residing in Malaysia. Its the grandkids who are more interesting. They are known as "third culture kids". No real home place. They have three passports each. One from the country each were born in, one for the country of each parent who are academics so they all live temporarily in a place they dont call home.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I am a Brit transplanted in Israel with dual British/Israeli Citizenship. Been in Israel 22 years.

Dad's family came to Philadelphia from SW Germany in 1747 on the ship "Fane" sailing from Rotterdam.

re: What Nationality Are You?

I have really enjoyed reading this thread - glad it has continued. Its fascinating to read how far the membership of this club extends. Technology really has made this a small world.

I am born, raised and live in the Philly suburbs of Bucks County. My father's parents immigrated from Germany in the early '20s.

My maternal grandfather was born in the US, i am told he was Welsh by background and my maternal grandmother was born in England and moved here with her family when she was 3.

For some reason I always identified more with the German side - maybe because nothing beats good Sauerbraten and Spätzle.

I collected stamps between 1975 - 1985. I gave it up once I started studying at the University. Recently I picked up the hobby again. Areas of interests are: Belgium, Scandinavia, Spain, Lithuania and Laos & Cambodia.

British! Born in Chester, which is in the NW of England, just south of Liverpool. Not a northerner - as my mother-in-law thinks - I know what true northerners are and living in Chester just doesn't cut it! Now in Bucks, for the last 30 years. So, getting a bit nesh.

And deeply regretting brexit!

Speaking of, for $99 one can get a DNA test. Is it worth it? I've seen it cheaper but wonder if the discount places leave out info?

re: What Nationality Are You?

Ok, let me join the funHappy

I'm American, born and raised in southern Indiana. Dad's side of the family is of English decent and mom's side Germany decent. Yeah, not very exciting...but my wife is 1st generation Turkish, just to spice things up a bit Cool Now I started a specialized Turkey stamp collection Happy Funny how life works out.

My father was on a destroyer in Pearl Harbor during the attack. His ship was blown up, and he was thrown off into the water, but had only minor injuries.

Ouch!!!!

I did the Ancestry Dot Com spit test a few months ago. I always knew I was 50% Irish, 25% Italian and 25% German. Ancestry terms for that was (in odd percentages and not round numbers) 50% English, 25% Italian and Greek, and 25% Western European.

I am an American, but practically all of us in the Americas, Australia and New Zealand descended from Europeans.

American, born Iowa, living in Pennsylvania the last 30 years, now in Berks county. Half Danish, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Welsh. Wife is 100% German, 9th generation in America. Her immigrant ancestor, Johann Georg, is buried 25 miles from where we live (along with 40 more of her ancestors, all in the same cemetery in Lehigh county), so we're "home".

I am Romanian. Years back, I was not interested to find out if my parents had other "blood" than Romanian. In my small country there are Hungarians, Germans, Turks, Gypsies, Serbs and many more! Too late now to find out, but what I know is that mixed marriages were not common there. Virgil

re: What Nationality Are You?

Born and educated in the city state of Londinium, home of the first postage stamp and seat of power of an empire which now consists only of the United Kingdom. I live and have spent most of my life in the Land of Smiles, Thailand. My children were born here and have now moved, two to the north of Wales and one to Hokkaido. My forebears were part of the Irish emigration into Londinium where the towns own melting pot came into play. I would like to think of myself as a citizen of the world, or as the present British prime minister says in a rather unkind manner, a citizen of nowhere.

I thought I was ½ Scottish - ½ English. But after DNA testing, I find I am 96% British & less than 1% Scottish. So much for the idea roots were from Callander, Scotland!
