Sally,
One gets to recognize Philatelic friends most often from pictures and photos at Forums or other social media sites.
I have only met one other member from this Forum but have met many Internet friends (non-members) from other groups. I do however, recognize many here from being 'friends' with them elsewhere. Over time one gets to know many people by chatting or residing in the same forum, indeed some become good friends.
It is, for me at least, one of the most satisfying things about forums/groups.

I've only met one SOR member in person but that was years before I joined and before I knew he was a collector! A happy coincidence to find ourselves on the same site.
At bidStart, I met three members at a couple of stamp shows; sadly, one is no longer with us, another has just disappeared from all boards, and the third can't get validated on this site (not for lack of trying).
I'm sure I've "seen" others at meetings not knowing who they were. I mean, I don't wear a sticker saying "Hi, I'm Peter (Cocollectibles)."
Curious what others' experience is.
Cheers,
Peter

I have never met a Stamporama member, or members of other stamp forum groups for that matter. Perhaps being up in the NW corner (Oregon) has something to do with that. But I don't consider them strangers either- rather friends.
Michael##### and I have had a couple of meetups. Anyone else, I wouldn't recognize them if they came up and bit me on the nose.

Lets see David Giles and Bobg have been to my home and vice versa,I know Meostamps and John Goyette from stamp shows, Londonbus would be to my house if he lived a little closer..i know him from Stampoffers probably 8 years ago..many of the newcomers i know from the SCF..sorry i forgot David Dennis..(DJD) and his wife Pat have also visited me..if i get out to Alberta i will visit them and if i get to Israel i will try to find the bus !!!
Many, possibly most, veterans wear a baseball style cap that loudly proclaims their military service affiliation and quite a few even have some legend that specifies the vessel or military formation that they were in.
I have very often come across Coast Guard or merchant Marine veterans (Depending on which cap I wear.) in stores or at other gatherings that way. Perhaps someone would like to design a logo and arrange for it to be applied to a ballcap that would have the same effect.
Some logo that screams "Stamp Collector" and includes the letters "SoR".
I had the honor and the privilege of going on not one but TWO charity walks with Noernberg in Cleveland. I also met Steve (gsdstamps) and Gary (shiznetd) from StampWants, but I don't know if they made the journey over here yet. Steve facilitated both of my walks with Noernberg and joined us on the second one! Gary made a MASSIVE contribution to the AHA HeartWalk charity drive that was the center of all that.
I regret that I was unable to hook up with a StampWants member from Las Vegas. I was out there on business and had a few hours between conferences, but we couldn't get our schedules to work out. Less than 2 years later I received a message from a relative that he had passed and I had to relate the sad news to everyone on StampWants. He went by the moniker "OneEagleLover" and I think it was Michael Numbers that gave him the nickname "Ein Eagle".
I'm sorry I never got to meet Dianne. I hope to visit Michael Numbers some day to see his train layout. Meeting IRL is great if you get the opportunity!
Ted! You said you'd never tell! We've had some good meetings. Ted has a lovely wife too. Actually, Ted I believe we've had more than a couple. Too bad I retired and don't get up in your area that much any more.
I have met several people from the StampWants/Bidstart site, some of whom are here as well. The furthest away was meeting a member from Canada the last time I went to Canada. We met in a restaurant and had a nice few hours chatting.
I have also spoken to several on the phone (hey Doug and Ted - to name a couple).
Others have involved communications through old fashioned letters and emails outside of the philatelic web sites. I guess the member that I communicated with the most this way was Diane. Sure do miss her.
Several others I'd like to get to meet in person. At least the internet let's us all come together electronically and become "friends" this way when before we would never know each other existed. There is some good in this, and the friendships that occur as a result. I know that a number of you I would call good friends, and I always have a cold beer or soda sitting in the 'fridge for you should you stop by. That's an open invitation too.
Its amazing the stamp collectors i have met via the internet who have stopped by and many spent a night or two...in our house if you are a stamp collector..its no questions asked..Bobg has been a great friend over the years as well as David Giles and Mike Powell from Ottawa...who tell us who we are going to stay with when we go up to Orapex every year..don't fight over us boys !!
I have met a great friend and Stamporama member on Skype, it's somewhat face to face and I can see his messy stamp table in the background. I have talked to some on the phone and have actually met a few at auctions. I attended a FDC event, where my collection was on display, and although I never left the collection unattended I did get to chat with some very knowledable philatelists, non members of Stamporama unfortunately. However, the discussion board does help to learn a little something about members and I enjoy that.
I wouldn't recognize anyone, but I'd recognize their dog.
My ex-next door neighbors were always saying hello to me on the street, but I had no idea who they were. It was only after I met their dog Roxie (the one in my photo), that I paid attention to them.
"I wouldn't recognize anyone, but I'd recognize their dog."
Since they say people tend to resemble their dogs perhaps you would reconize them after all.
would that I were half as attractive as my dog or half as good a human as she is a dog
I wish I was half as optimistic! I have been grilling for YEARS and NEVER have I given him a burger off the grill, but every time I bring the food off the grill, he follows expectantly, apparently thinking, "This could be the day. This could be the day!"
Michael - maybe our cats are siblings and we are related. Small world - Dan
Yes... I'd recognise many... especially my Latin America mentor, Phil Bruno!

Perhaps we should have a special sign and secret handshake?
Something simple like a silver paperclip on a breast pocket or lapel.
The Norwegian resistance used that during WW II to signify anti-Nazi groups.
In the late, 1890s a clever Norwegian (Are there any other kind ???) named Johan Vaaler became unhappy with the custom of using small straight pins to fasten papers together. First off, they caused papers to have two pinholes where they had been attached to one another. Secondly, they weren't that good at holding the multiple sheets firmly to begin with, and finally he was tired of getting his fingers stuck by the exposed tip of the straight pins which often caused blood drops on the needed forms that were used where he worked. .
Fiddling around with a piece of spring wire that he bent in several configurations he created what today is the ubiquitous common double oval paper clip. He applied for a patent in Germany in 1899 and the world became a better place.
A sketch of his idea from his patent application.
or all wear bowling shirts with "PHIL" on the name plate
Well David Dennis and Phil have the green bowling shirts on, we just need to get one for Sneaky...
I've had the pleasure of meeting David Dennis, DavidG and d1stamper (Doug Buss)
Anyone going to be at the Toronto Stamp Show on Sept. 27th? Let me know. It would be nice to say hello. I would love to be able to say I've been able to meet more members.
I will be in the Burlington/Mississauga area sometime in September. I hope my trip aligns with that weekend. This could be my first stamp show!
Would be great if you could make the Toronto Show. One dealer that I know should be there is, John Beddows. If you are at the show on Friday, you can ask him if I am still around. He will be able to point me out to you. Or just look for three females together from the ages of 37 to 86. That would be my daughter, me in the middle and my mom in a wheel chair. Shouldn't be hard to spot. hehehe! Not many groups like that around together.
I guess it would help if you know my name if you want to call out to me, or ask John. It's Suzanne. Tell him I'm from the Hamilton Club. He will know.
Darn, I didn't know about the Toronto show
Obviously I can't go but that would have been awesome!
I guess I need to keep up with things for next year.
Stamporama is the only stamp related website I belong to. With the influx of new members lately, it seems like everyone else already knows everyone else (probably not the best way to say it, but new members are welcoming newer members like long lost friends).
This started me wondering: how many of our members have met face-to-face? Would you know a fellow Stamporama member if you met one at a stamp show? Does anyone ever wear a "Stamporama button" so as to be instantly recognizable (haha)?
I only know one member personally and he is the one who recommended to me that I join. Somehow I was accepted and have enjoyed it ever since. But it might be fun to meet others if we were in the same part of the world at the same time.....
Sally
PS. Not really sure where this belongs but am confident that one of our fearless moderators will move it if needed.....
