Greetings,

Canal Zone FDCs from the 60s and 70s generally do not garner much attention. I picked this one up for the cachet, which I thought was nicely done, featuring the Balboa Post Office which after WWII became the busiest post office in the Canal Zone (previously it was Cristobal).

Here is the cover.

What is remarkable about this cover, I have discovered, is the cancel. This is a previously undiscovered version of a Balboa Post Office FDC cancel (at any rate it is not listed in the Canal Zone Postal Markings catalog of 1992).

Here is a closeup of the stamp Scott C34. You will notice, if you look very closely, that the image of Panama has what looks like an open waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In fact the the two oceans do not connect via the Panama Canal.

Ships passing through the canal are raised 87 feet by means of a lock and dam system, in order to cross the continental divide on a central man-made lake, and then are lowered back to sea level at the other end.
