Greetings all!

My WW collection consists of Scott International Volumes I, II, III and IV. I don't have Volume IV yet, but when I find one, I thought the best thing to do would be to combine all four volumes by country and then evenly place them into the four binders.

Lots of folks have done this and it seems the right way to go, but I wanted to know: Are there are any downsides to combining the four volumes by country like that?

Thanks!

All of my country album pages (Scott Specialty and Scott International)are arranged by country. Too much of a hassle to work on a country and need to have several albums out and going back and forth between them.

Much easier working on a country with all the pages together.

re: Scott Internationals: Combine by Country or Leave as Published

Just started combining Volumes I, II, and III, and I must say that it was more painful than I'd expected! There is really no smooth flow or clean separation of countries. I knew there would be problems to resolve, such as what to do when the semi-postals get interleaved with the airmails. But for some reason I didn't expect to have the first page of Austria end up in the middle of Australia!

Of course, had I stopped and thought it out carefully, that would have been apparent beforehand. The Vol I was particularly difficult as many of the smaller countries start on the back side of pages. Not much to do there except to mix them up, right?

Does anyone here know if I were to buy new pages, would I have the same problem? I'm hoping that the newly printed pages were laid out in a way that better facilitates combining by country.

However, I an not deterred! Tomorrow, I tackle the "B's". . .Happy

re: Scott Internationals: Combine by Country or Leave as Published

Yes, what you encountered is what I went through when I first decided to combine the countries. At the time that I did this, there were limited options. Now, what is probably the better thing to do is to subscribe to the Steiner pages. You can print out the pages for each country up to around 1950 (some you won't need that many of). That will give you nice pages and complete ones for the early years that the Scott International (abridged) have.

I first created blanks pages to get the countries complete. Then I obtained, as possible the Scott Specialty pages for each country up to around 1950 like I said above. Some countries I went further. I house all my pages in the large G&K green specialty binders from Subway. They are like #5 specialty binders and hold around 500 pages each at a cost less than what Scott charges. G&K also has a #5 binder for International pages. Now, I also print Steiner pages for some of the early stamps of countries that I cannot get in Scott Specialty pages. I also print many back-of-book pages from Steiner to consolidate the stamps as often Scott will just have one stamp on a page. I print the Steiner pages front and back. It really cuts down on the number of pages, which for me helps save shelf space that I don't have.

If you want, Subway Stamp Shop also sells the Brown International albums (1840-1950) in several parts. These are the old and complete Scott International albums. The Brown International Album became the Scott Specialized line of albums, while the Scott Blue International Junior album (which is abridged) became the Scott International line.

Just finished the "first pass" through the 3 volumes that I have. All pages are now in a disorderly order. I did develop some rules as I went along and I now need to go back to the beginning and apply the rules consistently. Between your comments here and what I have bees reading about acidic pages, I probably don't want to keep these pages for too long anyway. I'm starting to warm up to the idea of printing my own pages. Never would have considered but before, but the mess I have now, that's looking like more of a real possibility!

Don't know if you're talking about the Scott pages and those possibly being on acidic paper. I have Scott pages since the 1960s, and there is no problem with them at all.

re: Scott Internationals: Combine by Country or Leave as Published

Michael, Yes I was referring to the Scott pages. The Vol I that I have looks as if it was probably printed in the late 1940's. I'll check the copyright date when I get home. If I had to guess, I would say that the Vol II and Vol III were each published within a few years of the date of their last stamps as well. I also have my father's Vol II which he bought in the mid 1940's, and with no supplements it remains a partial volume. Good to hear that the Scotts as far back as the 1960's have no problem.

Had in mind that I would buy new replacement pages in a year or two when the stamp budget replenishes Happy. But seeing the mixed-up interleaving conditions of combining by country, I'll hold off on that decision until I've had a chance to live with it for a while and see if it grows on me. I'm OCD enough that the alphabetic mix-ups that Scott included in Volume I alone had me bothered!

Thanks again for both of yours comments.

You have an older Volume 1. I don't believe that the newer printings of volume 1 have the countries jumbled up like that. Back-of-book material for a country may remain a little mixed. You could look at eBay for a newer volume 1, or Scott specialty pages for the early part of a country, like your Austria/Australia example. Cheapest route is to get a subscription to the Steiner pages. Steiner pages follow the Palo album page format, by the way.

You are correct. The Volume I is copyright 1943. Couldn't find the Volume II or II cover pages in the ongoing re-shuffle. Interesting that the later Volume I's were laid out better and printed on better paper. I'm looking forward to getting through the "combining the volumes" phase and getting on to the "putting stamps in album" phase...

If I recall correctly, I believe Scott redid their International pages in the 1960s. Now and then these do come up on Ebay and Amazon at really good prices, and they sometimes come with stamps as well. Sometimes just single countries appear too. You could also check philatelic auctions as auction houses will sell off entire parts without messing with them. Sometimes, though, some country sections are removed depending on how full the pages are.

Well, my plans are changing slightly... for the better! I was looking for a Volume IV to complete the set, and found someone selling Volumes VI and V together. So now my WW collection will consist of Volumes I-V. When those last two arrive, I will shuffle them into the set and take stock of what I have created, be it beauty or beast.

Unfortunately, I have noticed several pages missing as you suggested I might. Thankfully not very many, and I have enough blank pages to fill in. All part of the excitement and risk of buying used albums.

re: Scott Internationals: Combine by Country or Leave as Published

Late entry to the comments.

I went through that shuffling business with Scotts years ago and used, as my parents did, blank pages. When the opportunity arose I bought a lightly used Minkus Supreme Global set to about 1975 and transferred everything to them from the muddled Scotts. One immediate advantage was that Airmails, Semi-Postals and certain revenues usually appear in date sequence so that problem was solved. I bought several packs of blank pages from Subway, which seems to be the best source of philatelic supplies in this country. My father had occasionally taken me with him on a Saturday morning in the late 1940s to Nassau Street and we always stopped at Subway Stamps when it was as the name implies a kiosk in the Nassau Street subway station or later at it's entrance, so I may be prejudiced.
About 1977, seeing both the high price of updates and how many pages were devoted to jam Jar Labels and the trash being sold from the Sand Dunes and Iron Curtain nations I went back to about 1975 or so and began using blank pages in separate looseleaf binders. Thus the several difficulties were solved to my satisfaction.
By the way, in its day, Minkus also produced a very informative world class catalog. Different numbers but arranged better and with far better explanations of the brief stories behind an issue. At times, I still use that catalog to supplement the somewhat sparse stamp descriptions found in Scott catalogs.
